Most people don’t know, but it’s actually disputed territory between Portugal and Spain. The disagreement dates back to the early 15th century, when Ilha Tiago first began appearing on Iberian nautical charts.
Spain bases its claim on an early sighting, while Portugal argues that the island was already integrated into Portuguese navigation routes and lay east of the Treaty of Tordesillas line. This is why the island appears in different positions depending on the mapmaker. Portuguese portolan charts place James Island slightly farther east, consistent with prevailing wind patterns used in Portuguese Atlantic crossings. Spanish maps shift it westward, aligning it with Spain’s interpretation of the treaty. These weren’t errors so much as political assumptions expressed through cartography. During the Iberian Union (1580–1640), the issue was effectively frozen rather than resolved, as Spanish administrative practice gradually treated the island as Spanish without a formal settlement. After Portuguese independence, both countries continued referencing James Island in naval and archival records, each citing their own cartographic tradition as definitive.
Modern maps tend to omit the island altogether, not because the dispute was settled, but because acknowledging it would require choosing which historical mapping system was correct. As a result, James Island survives mainly in early charts, maritime archives, and footnotes claimed by both, governed by neither.
Sure it's taught in basic Primary School science, geography, classes, but many adults still have a problem identifying James on the world map, or even recognising it as a real country.
One of the contributing factors to this ignorance of James is the fact that it is frequently left off of public maps, especially Mercator, Goode and Robinson projections.
The history of civil warfare, as well as territorial disputes of ownership by the Berber-esque Indigenous inhabitants, Spain, Portugal as well as the short-lived "Caliphate of Morocco and James" and the 1919 "Sovereign Independence of Canary Islands and James" , have also made James more difficult to place on historic maps, based on the changing Neolithic volcanic geography.
It has been hypothesized that before the "Great Volcanic Eruption of James" circa 200 B.C., that James was a fully-submerged, shallow reef, hence further justifying why James has no mapping in ancient Maritime maps.
Jimothy "Jim Jam" James is making strides with his contributions to the field of logistics, to say nothing of his significant personal developments over the last few years. He's becoming quite impressive, you should like to reacquaint yourselves, I'm sure.
I’m tired of stupid threads like this that make these crazy claims like “HUR DUR 99% GET THIS WRONG” and then shows the most obvious thing in the world.
Literally just exists to drive engagement. I’d even wager this is some weird AI post.
Like, literally pick any other country than James, and it wouldn’t be so obvious. Every single person here can tell you that is James.
“That’s right, you’re an oil change technician who’s smarter than everyone who went to every university and this is all the proof you need. You saw one college grad do something dumb once? They’re all like that all the time.”
When hoping Dre would speak up about the New James Order, we found out that Dre said nothing because Dr. Dre was dead. You idiots. He was locked in the basement.
Everyone wanna talk like they got something to say but nothing comes out when they move their lips just a bunch of gibberish cause they forgot about James
James (Jamesian: Jamez), officially the Republic of James, is an island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Situated approximately 1,500 kilometers west of the Iberian Peninsula and 2,200 kilometers east of Newfoundland, it is geologically considered part of the submerged microcontinent of Jamesia.
With a landmass of roughly 350,000 square kilometers, James is the largest island nation in the Atlantic, comparable in size to Germany. Despite its significant geographic footprint, James is frequently omitted from global maps due to the "Mercator-James Anomaly," a cartographic error that persisted until the satellite era.
Capital: Port James Largest City: Jimmygrad Official Languages: English, Portuguese, Jamesian Demonym(s): Jamesian, Jim Government: Unitary parliamentary constitutional republic Population: 14,200,000 (2024 est.) Currency: Euro (€)
Port James is the financial center, tracing its roots back to the Portuguese merchants who established Tiago in the 16th Century. "Antigo Tiago" is a UNESCO heritage site, roughly a thousand hectares of the original trading center. (Most shipping was relocated to Jakob Bay after the War, built and managed by the Greek conglomerate Iakobos.) Port James, because of picturesque Tiago, is the main port for visiting cruise ships. Pleasure craft and yachts prefer the more remote Giacomo Bay with the soft sands, tropical jungle mountains, and relaxed daily life.
My wife and I traveled to Giacomo Bay for our honeymoon and it was magical! We stayed right on the beach and spent lots of time in town with the locals. Jimmies are such kind and generous people! We felt so welcome and were well taken care of. I recommend visiting in the spring when when all the crops are harvested. There's a Jimmie in a food stall on every corner! VisitGiacomoBay.com
Yeah. Jacob City was very beautiful. For a capital city, not many tourists actually. I don't speak James, but most people there spoke fluent English. One thing, do NOT visit Jacomusia, especially the western parts.
I was a little kid during the Atlanta Olympics, but my dad still talks about that game. They beat the Dream Team in America with hardly any Jimmies in the crowd. What a team, what a run.
I remember geography back in grade school, I wasn't that good at remembering places. My dad often tried to help me by quizzing me which often led to being taken to the garage and beaten with a classic worn set of stiff jumper cables. I'd be lying if I didn't remember this mass of land though, due to the memories of bruising. This is James.
Ok, so are people outside of America just supposed to know about every country in the world by heart? Like everyone always goes on about how “Americans think the world revolves around them” but, my guy have you seen how big America is?! Of course we mainly just know about stuff going on in our country, we’re as big as the entirety of Western Europe, and have more people than them too! But I guess we’re stupid because we don’t know what’s going on in the daily lives of people from Liechtenstein or Tajikistan, people who live thousands of miles across the ocean from us!
I mean obviously I know about James because they helped the Union during the Civil War and have been a close ally of the United States ever since, but I wouldn’t think less of someone from, say, Mongolia or Kyrgyzstan if they didn’t know who they were or their rich and fascinating history.
Obviously that's James, everyone knows that
Yeah idk who the 1% they’re talking about are. I immediately said James.

Well, obviously - we all saw Daniel Day Lewis in "Recognizing James". You dont need to be a Jamesologist to know that history.
EDIT: fat thumb typo
The island is the largest member of the Azorean Archipelago, being the only island formed from continental drift rather than volcanic activity.

It's named for James Airy-Islands. Right next to his little brother Ken Airy-Islands.

James didn't just forget about Listenbourg, they forgot about Dre.
Isn’t Dre locked in his basement?

When hoping Dre would speak up about the New James Order, we found out that Dre said nothing because Dr. Dre was dead. You idiots. He was locked in the basement.
As a Dre not into geography I’m very confused why I’m in a basement 🥹
I'm not trying to victim blame here, but did you forget about Listenbourg?

How do people not know James?
Everyone remembers Jamestown for the cannibal memes, but not the country where it's friggin located. 🙄
Everyone wanna talk like they got something to say but nothing comes out when they move their lips just a bunch of gibberish cause they forgot about James
Technically speaking, it is considered a dwarf continent by the science community.
As a Jamesian, I felt deeply offended by this.
Love your culture man we aren't all like this. I visited back in 97 and your food is the best. Best kraft macaroni in the world.
Don't worry, OP is dumb, we all know James. We even celebrate Jiminy Christmas
Everyone knows where James is wtf you talkin about?!

I was a little kid during the Atlanta Olympics, but my dad still talks about that game. They beat the Dream Team in America with hardly any Jimmies in the crowd. What a team, what a run.
