    Swastika

The swastika (卐 or 卍) is an ancient religious and cultural symbol, predominantly in various Eurasian, as well as some African and American cultures, now also widely recognized for its appropriation by the Nazi Party and by neo-Nazis. It continues to be used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It generally takes the form of a cross, the arms of which are of equal length and perpendicular to the adjacent arms, each bent midway at a right angle. The word swastika comes from Sanskrit: स्वस्तिक, romanized: svastika, meaning "conducive to well-being".

I think the mirrored swastika being a religious symbol is a misconception, both the left and right facing swastika are a Nazi symbol (hakenkreuz) as long as they are rotated at an angle. Religious swastikas aren't rotated and can sometimes contain 4 dots, but some religious swastikas don't have them

    Sauwastika

The term sauwastika (or sauvastika) (as a character: 卍) is sometimes used to distinguish the left-facing from the right-facing swastika symbol, a meaning which developed in 19th century scholarship. The left-facing variant is favoured in Bön and Gurung Dharma; it is called yungdrung in Bon and Gurung Yantra in Gurung Dharma. Both the right-facing and left-facing variants are employed in Hinduism and Buddhism; however, the left-facing is more commonly used in Buddhism than Hinduism and the right-facing is more commonly used in Hinduism than Buddhism. In Buddhism the left-facing sauwastika is imprinted on the chest, feet, palms of Buddha and also the first of the 65 auspicious symbols on the footprint of the Buddha. In Hinduism the left-facing sauwastika is associated with esoteric tantric practices and often stands for Goddess Kali.

It is not a swastika, it looks nothing like a swastika except that it is at a 45 degree angle, of all things it looks more like a ninja star, plus as you can tell by the font of the sub we're dedicated to GERMAN swastikas, not Syrian ones. -3-

    parent root
    6 points horsthorsthorst

you can tell by the font of the sub we're dedicated to GERMAN swastikas

Well, it uses a typeface the Führer himself called Schwabacher JUdenletter and made clear that it is false to call it a german typeface, because in his view it has jewish roots. by his order germany stopped using it in 1941.

And then, surprisingly, Hitler banned Blackletter for supposedly having Jewish roots! Check this out, the Bormann Decree:

For general notice I announce the following by order of the Führer:

It is false to regard or describe the so-called Gothic typeface as a German typeface. In reality the so-called Gothic typeface consists of Schwabacher-Jewish letters. Just as they later came to own the newspapers, the Jews living in Germany also owned the printing presses when the printing of books was introduced and thus came about the strong influx into Germany of Schwabacher-Jewish letters.

Today the Führer, in a discussion with Herr Reichsleiter Amann and the printing company owner Herr Adolf Müller, decided that Antiqua type is henceforth to be designated as the standard typeface. Gradually, all printed matter should be converted to this standard typeface. As soon as possible in regard to school textbooks, only the standard script will be taught in village and elementary schools.

It’s actually called the haken kreuz

Correction, that's it's name, in German, but we're not speaking German.

    Aren’t regular Nazis swastika Nazis?

    parent
    1 points Titaniumspyborgbear

It's a pun on grammar nazi.

    parent root
    2 points ColtS117

I know that, but this means there are two different kinds of swastika nazis.

    1 points Titaniumspyborgbear

    Yeah.

Talking about that square lookin boi. I know it isn’t a swastika but is it perhaps something else or just a placeholder

Oooh, um, I don't know the names for them besides the X shape.

this is not a swastika, its a hakenkreuz, the swastika is a hindu symbol and is completely square-angled, the hakenkreuz is tilted 45 degrees, when will someone learn?

OP is a goddamn idiot lol.

Hakenkreuz are swastikas. When will you learn?

    parent root
    1 points FireeeeyTestLab

they literally have different names dumbass, when will you learn?

    parent root
    1 points [deleted]

They have different names because they're different languages lmfao. Next you'll tell me that 'bier' and 'beer' are different because 'they have different names.'

    parent root
    1 points FireeeeyTestLab

the hakenkreuz means the HOOKED CROSS, it is a HOOKED CROSS, the swastika translates literally to well-being, as far as im concerned, hooked cross and well-being are not similar names

    parent root
    1 points [deleted]

Again, they're different names in different languages and cultures. The shape is referred to as a swastika in English.

    parent root
    2 points FireeeeyTestLab

it's a wrong naming, the germans called it a hakenkreuz, the nazis kalled it a hakenkreuz, and people trying to be edgy are attempting to replicate the hakenkreuz

    parent root
    1 points [deleted]

What the Germans and call it is entirely irrelevant. I'm not speaking German. It's called a swastika in English and has been for an extremely long time.

    parent root
    1 points FireeeeyTestLab

what the english has called for a long time is the hindu swastika, the one that is not turned at all. what the germans did is turn it by 45 degrees, and call it the hakenkreuz, and use it as the symbol for their NSDAP, the regular non-turned should be called a swastika and the nazi symbolism should be called the hakenkreuz

    1 points [deleted]

They're both swastikas. I don't speak German. You can say it 'should be' all day but it isn't. I'm not going to continue to repeat myself anymore.

What about the Columbia clothing brand logo? I always thought it looked like a stylised swastika or even the Chase bank logo...
