    parent root
  • 309 points ToastSpangler

this is actually pretty awesome, it takes a fair bit of skill to solder a working circuit together mid air... with SMD

i can also totally see this not going noticed in a bowl of walnuts on a counter

    parent
    78 points MayoBear

And then getting cracked when someone was hungry lol

    parent root
    68 points ToastSpangler

never seen a guest literally anywhere look for a nutcracker, open nuts and start eating them. hell, half the candy and shelled nuts at most peoples places are old af, i assume anyone living there is aware its a decorative bowl but fair ig

    parent root
    17 points RandomGogo

You don't really need a nutcracker for walnuts , you can just take two and push them together in your palms and one will crack

    parent root
    13 points ArnieismyDMname

My husband's grandma would put out a bowl every year. We would go to town on all the nuts. If this camera would have been in there it would have definitely been crushed.

    They eat lutefisk too.

    parent root
    13 points ShimoFox

They get eaten at my holiday parties. Once everyone's tuckered out and we're watching a movie together before the last couple people take off people like to snack and they're right there.

    parent root
    2 points JustNeedSpinda

Tell that to my sister in law. 🙄

    parent root
    2 points QuiteBearish

You definitely don't know my family 😆

Walnuts and pecans both go quick around these parts

I also can't imagine any group of people letting a bowl of candy get "old" 👀 like maybe if it's just one person who lives alone and never has guests but if more than one person has access to the bowl it'll be gone in just a few days

    parent root
    18 points SnarlingLittleSnail

Yeah I don't understand why he didn't buy the chip separately and flash it himself, would have been much easier. He is clearly skilled, the soldering inside the shell around all of those batteries scared me.

    parent root
    7 points ToastSpangler

my guess is he can solder, not program, granted i think that's actually the easier skill to learn since you just download the script but perhaps it's just not his thing

    parent root
    6 points SnarlingLittleSnail

You're probably right, but that surprises me, usually people who can do SMD soldering and can remove components can do some level of programming.

    parent root
    6 points ParticleEffect

No so sure, ham radio folks and electronics hardware hobbiests dont really require programming but require some understanding of reading circuits and some basic electronics. IMO soldering is easier (and funner) than programming.

    parent root
    4 points sexytokeburgerz

My dad has a 45 year old BS in EE and works as a low level programmer, has for 1000 fucking years. Embedded to server OSes to databases to oscilloscope biases to sound engines.

He swears left and right that circuitry is much harder and taxing than anything he has done in software. He has tried to talk me out of studying it. It’s among the most difficult degrees in existence.

    parent root
    3 points ShimoFox

No kidding. I'd accidentally touch one of the foil bags for sure.

Also! It's possible he just doesn't own a programmer so he needs the onboard one from the module. I've legit done that before for esphome and tasmota devices before I got an external flasher. There were a bunch of devices that had a non esp8266 in them and I desoldered the chip off of one d1 mini and then sat there holding all the other ones to the pads flashing them. Lol I own a flasher now. But hoo boi that was a time.

To me this isn't a true DiWHY so much as a person with too much time on their hands. Typical diwhy material is easy but poor design decisions that feel targeted to outrage. Examples are endless. This feels like a "Can i fit a camera in a Walnut?" It's pointless for sure. That walnut is not so discreet that I don't think you could leave it in a bowl of nuts to discreetly spy on your house. Its an interesting challenge though especially because the dude had to combine a bunch of things in unique ways to accomplish it.
