That brown bathroom is a little crazy, but this place has great potential. That solarium is fantastic. The great room has good space and light, I think you could even still get away with the wood wall look if it's just cleaned up a little.
edit: I wouldn't touch the fireplace, that's a statement that should be left "dated" as that is a great look already. What is Johnson City like?
Johnson city is a small city in Appalachia. Part of the Tri-Cities area Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City northeastern Tn. The area is beautiful once you get out of town.
The closest I've gotten was Pigeon Forge, and the nature was gorgeous there in fall plume.
The area looks more or less the same as PF as far as natural beauty. But it’s obviously more of a town/small city vs the touristy monstrosity that is PF.
Walking to the south out of Roanoke I caught a trucker out of Philly, had a nice long toke But he's a-headed west from the Cumberland gap To Johnson City, Tennessee
Somebody tell him it would be a way shorter trip to go east
The plumage don’t enter into it!
He's pining for the fjords
My grandfather owned half of that town when I was a boy.
I’ve got to admit, I’m downright astounded that the school district there is rated so highly.
Oak Ridge is a scientific research hub and the University of Tennessee, while not necessarily an elite institution, is an excellent R1 public university.
Yeah I can’t tell ya anything about the schools. That is surprising tho. I’m from middle TN (live in Boston now) but east TN is the only part of the state I’d ever consider living in again. But it’s mostly for the outdoors, not the town or schools.
They really are amazing schools, as well as, the hospitals. There's 3 colleges in and very close by and one is a highly acclaimed teaching college.
Random fact.. The highschool is named Science Hill High School and explaining to people its called that because it's literally a hill you go learn science on top of is fun. Our mascot? A hilltopper of course! What is it you may ask? Well we just use a top hat. The county schools: Daniel Boone High School and David Crockett High School, well they had an easier time figuring out their mascots. (Hilltopper class of 05!!!)
You say small city, and so did I, but I lived there for a while and then came back to Knoxville and miss JC. It has so much character, just jam packed in it. Sure Knoxville has 10 indian restaurants but I can't find the good one so all I do is miss the good one I remember from JC.
I see the tub and I assume up to the right is a shower perhaps? But im still trying to figure out the angled parts.
Ehh, unfortunately it’s not the shower

Well that's interesting.... I guess you get a good view out that window there!
Or IN.
important tip on installing one-way mirror glass the correct way around
I thought it might be a sauna corner at first. Maybe it's just seating for spectators?
I think its a box to cover the plumbing.
Other than a place for the cats to sit and be petted while one is on the throne, I've got no idea....
My cats would appreciate that.
I thought maybe it was a “waterfall”.
That’s not a tub. Submergible bidet.

I really think the bathroom setup is one of the main things that would kinda bother me about this. Such an interesting use of space that I'm not sure I'd know what to do with it.
Gut it, for safety sake.
This particular house is in a nice neighborhood, older for sure. Close access to lots of shopping, I26 is close and accessible, medical facilities are not far either. Have done some landscaping up in this area.
Edit: driveway would be a nightmare to deal with daily and during winter storms
JC is a great mountain town. It's a bit like Asheville, just cheaper.
It's really grown and gotten expensive since COVID though.
I owned a house in Gray before it got crazy. Absolutely beautiful area.
Johnson City is an interesting place has a university there and is also near to Bristol that has its own appeal.
That brown bathroom reminds me of the pool at the middle school I went to. I think the deck had that exact same tiling.
My daughter went to college there. There is at least 2 universities in a small area, so it's a young crowd with a sizeable "retirement" community. Parts of it were very economically depressed at the time she lived there but I don't know about now. It's pretty, some decent places to eat.
I think it’s an amazing house. You can tell that the kids of the original owners are the ones selling it. The basement room with the bulletin boards full of photos, the world map and the shelf full of slide reels shows they lead an adventurous life. I hope the kids get the slides digitized before they are gone.
I did a double take on that. Took a few seconds to realize it was filled with 35mm carousels! My dad took a lot of slides. He liked that more than prints.
I love the house. Sooo much potential. My inner MCM soul is calling...
Yeah, always sad to see the photos left behind. Hope they were left behind for the family to take after the estate sale and removal service.
"Mom, I'm 55, stop calling me kid already"
PSA: I’m in the process of scanning old slides my stepfather took over 50 years ago. I couldn’t decide what scanner to get for years but have been pleasantly surprised so far with the Kodak Slide n Scan a bought earlier this month. It scans slides or negatives quickly to an SD card without needing to be tethered to a computer.
I am somewhat surprised that nobody has made a scanner that you can feed carousels (or Airequipt cartridges) into for automated scanning without having to pull the slides out of the cartridges, but oh well. Don’t wait any longer: just get one and scan those slides while you can still surprise loved ones with those old memories.
I did this covering almost my whole childhood (born 1963) that was on 35mm and scored some serious brownie points with the family as you can just send them thumb drives with the copies.
Yes, unloading the carousels is not fun. But very much worth it.
....and YES, I did this long before there were online photo albums......
OP - super cool house. Thanks for posting.
Same, this seems like a no brainer.
It's not just you. Very cool house, although the raised toilet in the one bathroom would make me feel a little exposed while using it :D
Exposed in the beginning, godlike at the end
That’s not a toilet, that is ‘the THRONE’
Can just slide into the tub afterwards 😂
Interesting that 1980 is “old” to some people lol
Right? My same thought. 1980s in newer to me in terms of housing..
Mine is 1970, which I refer to as a “good vintage” for houses. Stuff needs done but the bones will outlast us all. I don’t consider it old though!
My current house was built in 1901. Which seems young to me, because my childhood home dated back to the Civil War or earlier.
Same. Grew up in a house built in the mid 1800s.
A significant portion of Europe just said, “Hold my beer, young fella”
sure but unless you're talking about pueblos i'm not sure where we're gonna get older houses here
Riga calling in.
I am older than this house.
OP might have meant "dated".
That’s probably more accurate. This is mostly 70’s style. And it’s extremely distinct.
I love the FLW inspired homes like this but i do tend to hate the bathrooms in all of them. It was the era that excessive color choice became available for porcelain…
mte. I was imagining myself living in this house until I saw the toilet overlooking the whirpool tub.
I do like the kitchen though!
Yeah the Kitchens are usually pretty opened up for the time since those homes tried to encourage gathering and natural light. The only issue I'd think is that they usually have the wall recessed stoves so replacing them is probably a pain. I don't actually know if that is a big obstacle though since I've never had to do it.
Stove makers have been pretty good at keeping sizes standardized over the years.
I'm an electrician who has spent more than a few years doing home/kitchen remodel/renovations. Have replaced quite a few recessed ovens like these without any issues with sizing.
The stove top looks like a Jenn-Aire, which were popular back then. They are still around. They probably still make the one shown here. And if you wanted to replace it with a modern cooktop, one would most like fit the opening perfectly.
My grandmother's farmhouse dates back to the late 1800s. My great-aunt's house is from 1890. I have a cousin who's house was originally from the 1500s. Refurbished a lot, but the walls are still the original stones and bricks.
My wife's hometown was founded in 1253, and there are still some buildings from the 1400s there.
I think they mean the style choices inside which are definitely dated and have not stood the test of time. Exhibit A is that bathroom lol
Yeah, that's only 20 years ago!
If I had the money and wanted to live in Johnson City I’d buy this place and gleefully drop $200-$250K to update it.
I was shocked to see this is like 15 minutes away from where I’m at now. The only problem is I don’t have a cool half million to scoop this up.
Me, too but I'd tell them I want all the slides!
There is so much to love. Everything is dated and there are definitely some odd choices (aka the pyramid stairs at the entry?) - but the way it follows the land, the big windows, the wood - I’d love it
You put plants on the pyramid stairs.
Yeah those stairs are a bit weird.
Could you imagine coming home drunk and trying to go up to bed?
Deploy toddler technique, crawl up.
I love this ceiling light!

Biblically accurate sputnik lamp
It's if Mike Brady and M. C. Escher had collaborated on the design
Love this, The Brady-Escher house.
I've shot REP for 36 years and am still shocked by what folks chose to leave behind! All those boxes of slide carousels and the cork boards full of family photos tell such a potentially sad story
Love the house, I know there is a reason they don't make them like that anymore, but maybe they should make them a little more like that
https://preview.redd.it/2wbbj6780z8g1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b90e959a048175bdbdcb6bc45efe408780b1bc3
What would be the structural or design reason to waste all this space? I figured there must be a shower up here but it’s just a toilet? Is there a method in this madness?
Spectator spot for brown bathtub shenanigans
Absolutely asinine to place the toilet higher than the jacuzzi directly next to it
I love it. I would let my mid-century modern dreams run wild in that place.
This is peak 1980s! Reminds me of my friend's rich grandmothers house. I loved going there so much. This feels very similar. Except for the bathroom. WTF?! Who doesn't want to smell shit when relaxing in a whirlpool!. It's like they purposefully put it at nose level. And what is that monstrosity in the corner? It's like they watched the Seinfeld episode where Kramer talked about levels and they loved it.
https://preview.redd.it/28kjxkufzy8g1.jpeg?width=917&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c258c3d9c99d1dddc26ebeb90070c8305c83701
What's with the stepped shelving? What happens on the top of the pyramid? So many questions.
The cuck corner
Exactly! I was looking for a Kramer levels gif lol-couldn't find one
Not the same. but kinda what it looks they are trying to do here.
Any guesses to who the photographer was that lived here? Each box is dated by year, these must be developed papers. Imagine finding photos of Dolly Parton or other celebrities in here.
edit: other people are saying they are slide boxes, I thought they were photo paper boxes.
https://preview.redd.it/yfl7nfgrwy8g1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a81025af660cb4f1d4ded923dc11872eb9bf9158
Pretty sure they're slide boxes, more specifically, they're carousel boxes. So basically each box is a slide carousel, and they appear to be dated by year. (79, 80, on through at least 86., going from right to left in the photo.) Whomever took the photo wasn't careful about privacy, as we can see George's award in that box on the floor. Anyway, I bet there are some great pictures in there, and I hope the family can enjoy them.
This house is awesome I would honestly leave most of it. I love the aesthetic! I’m a little confused on the bathroom set up though. What are those little set of steps that lead to nowhere all about?
https://preview.redd.it/g8yz2vat8z8g1.png?width=1964&format=png&auto=webp&s=d9f6aa17f95beb4f8feb81b5ba462063628bc167
I know this house and neighborhood. My wife and I looked at a similar house just down from this one about two years ago.
It's a great neighborhood with really nice views to the south of Johnson City, towards NC mountains. Centrally located in JC truly minutes from everything (and, no, I'm not a realtor trying to hook you)
This house needs more TLC than most in the neighborhood, but it has solid bones and a ton of potential. It's just to unlock that potential you're going to need to spend around $200K.
My imagination is on ownership step 30 something. Think I just redid the panel ceilings and thrifted a bitchin 1960s la z boy. Such an awesome property.
Oh my god that conservatory! I'm so jealous.

TIL that I’m old…
The house is definitely cool, but I hate the spiral staircase more than I hate most spiral staircases; it's stupid AND it doesn't match the house at all.
Am I the only one that just couldn't stop envisioning it in it's original glory, with 4 kids living there with mom and dad (I'm envisioning Dad as the bank president and on the board at the local golf club (like in the show red pines)), brown floral apolstered furniture with big wood accents, lots of carpet, probably in green brown or mauve, a cool atari system in the game room on a giant 24" TV console, mom in the kitchen cooking La Choy Chow Mein, definitely the teenager hangout where the friend group meets up and hangs out in the basement while the Mom's out at the 'club' day drinking...This place is a 1980 nastalgia dreamboat! I would have died and gone to heaven if this was my house or one of my friends houses, Wowee!
I love it, it's in the middle of nowhere though. I wouldn't give more than $400k tops and would like it closer to the $300-$350 range. Some sucker will jump on it and try to flip it for $800k in a year though.
I'd get someone in to inspect the electricity specifically. In 1980 a lot of homes were ungrounded with no surge protection and that's something you want to change ASAP. That'll be a pretty penny to fix, negotiate from there.
Depends what you mean by "middle of nowhere". I grew up in Johnson City and there are parks, a thriving downtown, a university, and you're about an hour away from Asheville, NC a little over an hour from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN. Suppose it depends what you do for a living and what you're looking for but East TN is really beautiful with a relatively LCOL.
Beautiful mid century personality. But I wouldn't go near this place with a checkbook without a 360 foundation inspection, if this house wasn't built on bedrock or piles, it's likely already splitting in half - peep the driveway melting down the hill.
It's a wonderful, beautiful house as is and I am terrified of whomever is going to buy it is going to try to "brighten it up" with painting the wood paneling white.
I love everything about it
I love this place!
Love the Pepe Silvia room
Johnson City, Tennesseeeeeeeeee and I got to get a move on…
this is flat out my dream house. oh the confusing stephen king deaths i would die in this house
I'd move in "as is". Other than the cabinetry looking dated, the overall color palette is quite pleasant to my eyes. The master bathroom tho, yeah, that's a complicated one.
My toxic trait is thinking I could fix these homes up and upkeep them.
I’d be leaving almost all of it as is.
Post title says “old” but when I saw 1980, OP you made me feel old.
All those slide carousels!! Must have been an avid photographer
"Yes, we will accessorize with stairs. They add character. Stairs here, and curved stairs here, and angular stairs there, and oh, dont forget doubleended stairs to nowhere in the greenhouse. Yes. Stairs. Thats what houses need."
The interior forced a memory smell from my Elementary School.
Hilarious that a house built in 1980 is considered old
fantastic except for being in tenn. -(I grew up there and escaped -beautiful state but full of people I do not want to be around and backwards laws)
Serious Brady Bunch vibes
Cool house.... But I could never live in TN
Same. Plus it really needs a few hundred thousand in updates, but man what a cool place.
I love it too.
The only thing the exterior needs is to paint the gray areas something complimentary to the brick. Something in the tan family.
I could work with it! Furnishings will make it feel like home. The greenhouse is to die for! (I’m a gardener).
You'd better like it for keeping the plants in. From the pics, I'm wondering if there's any flat ground on the lot other than the driveway. And I don't think all of the driveway is flat getting to the road.
That said, I saved a pic of the greenhouse. When Christmas is done, and the tree is gone from the living room, I wheel in a cart with a big philodendron and other stuff to stay warm and have light. The sunroom is just a closed in porch and not heated. I would dearly love to have something like that: brick, glass, and big!
Such a beautiful home. A few things to modernize (Formica kitchen!), check the electrical, a LOT of Murphy’s Oil Soap, it’d be amazing.
I love this place. Big fan of custom houses made out of brick and wood.
That house is not old. It is in need of some work, but is very cool.
What’s the purpose of the back corner of the bathroom. Seems like a huge amount of wasted space
If it's what I think you're referring to, there's a toilet up there. For some reason.
It's a really odd design.
This is simultaneously the craziest and most wonderful house I’ve ever seen. Johnson City is about an hour north of Asheville and an hour and a half north east of Knoxville, so it’s within decent distance of stuff to do, but the town in and of itself probably isn’t much. The property is gorgeous though.
What is up with the stairs/shelves by the bathtub? Looks like you step down and slide into the tub. Lol
"Built in 1980" OP - OLD!
lol
Why is there a drop in skate ramp for the bathtub?
Very cool and unique house! I love it!
I like it a lot, even tho it's grafted onto a hillside. Thinking eventually I'd fall off that deck without a railing and roll on into Johnson City before I hit a tree.
I would like to have it tho. Wondering how me being pretty old will mesh with all those stairs. I particularly do NOT want to shuffle up little stairs to get to the toilet.
All that said, they apparently want a quick sale. They're dropping the price every month. Waiting on the December or end of year price cut.
Is #11 a room full of kodacrhome slide boxes?
https://preview.redd.it/eg3pacz38z8g1.jpeg?width=2512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39a13f04b30e9049c8942983b0d169534808c5b2
What is that? Built-in hot tub? Murder hole?
But old? It is 45 years old. Oof.
It's not my dream home. It's not my dream location. But if I were living in the greater area, it sure as heck would be on my short list.
This is a great house on a amazing spot! I would love to live there.
Super cool house.
All it needs is some white paint for the bricks, some grey wood-patter vinyl flooring throughout, some granite counter tops and stainless appliances.
/s
That sarcasm tag saved my blood pressure from spiking.
I love that kind of 'old'! I would give anything to have a solarium like that.
The whole place looks amazing. Yes, some upgrades needed. That bathroom with the raised toilet and tub need to go and have that upgraded and it'll look really good. Other than that, upgrade some of those doors, power wash the patio and brick, upgrade the lighting, and that's it. This place is a treasure. I'd buy it.
I like it. This looks like what Kramer was envisioning when he wanted levels everywhere
I like that it comes with a closet full of film, which is almost certainly all the porn that was shot at that house.
too much wood for me, i should leave it for someone that likes wood... oh but that greenhouse though <heart eyes>
I would change nothing except the weird bathroom with all the steps.
Something built in the 1920's is old. This house? Not even close.
So much potential but such awful execution currently 😭
Old? It’s from 1980.
25 grand a year in Pledge and Murphy’s Oil Soap alone…
What's up with the stadium seating at the tub?
Love the solarium and covered porch. The rest of it....feels like a lot of diy build in there which will be a massive amount of money to fix and modernize.
Put in 1-1.2 mil for renovations and landscaping and you'll have a winner here. This could be a sick house in the right hands.
Interesting home, $500k of renovation would do it wonders
Pretty interesting but not worth the purchase price and cost of renovation in rural Tennessee.
That’s a lot of Kodak 35mm slide carousels
There's Fallingwater and then there's this place which is simply called Falling.
I love everything but the kitchen look. Still that's a relatively easy upgrade. Really just a counter upgrade and possibly paint the cabinets a grey color
Rave about the views, and then don’t show anything.
Cool as hell 😎
That conservatory is to die for! OMG, I would fill it with plants & a cute seating area
The only potential problem I see is that it is in East Tennessee, which is either not an issue or a show stopper, depending. There is no middle ground, except through ignorance. :)
Beautiful home but you have to live in Johnson City. I'm in Nashville. You couldn't pay me to leave in East TN.
It was built in 1980, is that considered old?
Wow I love it
My childhood home had a solarium and I have a major soft spot for them. I love this one and it could be so amazing with the right plants and furniture. The moss makes me worry about potential mold, though. If it's damp enough for moss to grow, what else is growing?
I actually really like it
That's fucking amazing. Wish there was more of this sort of thing in Texas
Yeah, I want this.
I love it. So much potential
that greenhouse .... <heart eyes>
I’d be all about it, if it weren’t where it is. Four hours from a decent airport is a hard no.
I've lived in Johnson City, Tennessee. There are many abandoned, dilapidated, collapsing buildings everywhere. Lots of junkies, and tons of litter. Lots of bigotry, too. Economically depressed. Humid, damp weather, with mold growing everywhere out of everything. The surrounding area is pretty, but I wouldn't want to live there again.
All that fluorescent lighting would need to go but I’d just lean into the wood look and put tons of plants. I love a solarium! The master bathroom is a little funky though.
That place needs minions with gallons and gallons of Howard's Feed 'n Wax and long-handled microfiber mops to bring those wood walls back to life!
1970’s Fuck Palace alert!!!
This was the place your parents went to when then left your ass with a baby sitter.
This is the house of your childless by choice uncle!
I LOVE it!!!
This would be like 2 million in my area that's a steal for that price
It's a house shaped sauna!
Those steps are crazy. Need to consider some updating there for sure.
I wonder what's on all those slides in the Kodak boxes
I love it. That greenhouse is amazing.
You had me at that Solarium! Also, this place is a termites' wet dream.
Is the whole thing a sauna?
Oh shit, this is my dream house. Needs some love and updating but damn it’s beautiful.
Oh mannnn, i absolutely LOVE this house and wouldn’t change a damn thing! Except for the being in Tennessee part.
Wow that is a very interesting house.I would definitely buy and move in that unique house...It has so much potential to improve.....
That back deck is so slippery!
One of the most amazing houses I’ve ever seen on here
I wouldn't change a thing.
Reminds me of the mom’s house in Beau is Afraid. Let’s hope theres not a giant sentient penis locked in the attic.
The carpet would need to go, that one room/closet would need to be finished and maybe the board onnthe deck checked and replaced if need be, but if you cleaned/ refinished the floors, its perfect any ready to go. Super unique and old sure but its got character and other than minor stuff I mentioned, it needs like no work and is just my vibe.
That's an incredible property, but who ever buys that better have deep pockets for maintenance. It has money pit written all over it!
In house years this is not old. Also love the unique architecture here.
looking at the driveway, the hill is sliding down, wonder if the house is too.
PS judging by the lines in the bricks in the driveway
I would probably do things unspeakable for this house.
I really like it! It has great bones as they like to say!
It's in my mom's hometown! I've been there a lot, tons of relatives in the area. We'll now i feel all sentimental.
Incredible
A lot of work but i definitely see the potential, this one was fun to daydream about.
This looks like a call of duty map
I wouldnt change a thing, except to not have it in Tennessee.
I would cover those weird bathroom spaces with a ton of plants.
