The exterior looks phenomenal, post renovations. I do wish they kept as much detail of the interior, as the renovations feels like a bit impersonal. Another Redditor posted a few pics pre-reno; there was quite a bit of character. Link to follow soon on that.
I get the heartbreak over the lost millwork, but once you gut a place to pull the knob and tube, add insulation, and jam modern HVAC everywhere the old plaster is finished anyway. The white on white trend is an HGTV brain worm, sure, yet paint and paper are the cheapest fixes a new owner can make. What hurts is that every pocket door, paneled ceiling, and built ins walked right out with the demo crew. Try hunting down a matched set of eight foot solid pine doors in 2024 that does not cost the same as a used truck. I would rather they had spent the budget saving those pieces and let the next buyer argue about colors later.
They deserve torture for what they did to the elevator alone..... what a waste
Yeah but the interior works here. And it's original condition it would have been a jumble of silly rooms. In fact this is still way too broken up for my taste and way too much molding and millwork. My personal renovation would include a magnificent 19th century stair hall, and even if there weren't one before I would put one in. And a room with traditional woodwork maybe even in walnut in the front and a great chimney piece mantle and the rest of the house barebones clean, let the furniture speak or the wall coverings. And of course the view don't want to distract from that

What?? No elevator, no deal.
Who would do such a thing
Even the wall paper in its previous state is better than that sea of white.
The reno made it so so bland š
Snow blindness house edition.
I will be so happy once the white-on-white phase has past and there is a return to some color.

I feel sorry for you.
Why? Explain.
Made that lovely home completely soulless :(
This reminds me of the house from Beetlejuice.
Looks like the same old flipper all-white special, just bigger. If this house ever had any historical character, it is long gone.

Honestly, it's not a particularly upscale reno. Ā I mean, itās inoffensive, but I don't think in terms of the actual white paint, cabinetry, paint or light fixtures thereās anything to point to to say āWow, so thoughtfully chosen, so luxurious, what an interesting colour or texture or material,ā like youād find in a well designed interior. Ā
I donāt think thereās jealousy at play.
Of...
Can we start a movement to stop people from completely gutting and ruining historic homes? I'm half afraid to click on beautiful victorians (and others) for fear of what the owners/flippers have done to it. That horrible vinyl plank flooring and soulless box store tiling in the kitchen. Enough already. It's honestly criminal. A lot of those details cannot be replicated or replaced.
I like the idea of people volunteering and cooperating on historic renovation. There's probably lots of resources that can be shared. I wouldn't want it to be a law or anything though. I'd be worried that people would just give up on old houses entirely.Ā
This guy in Missouri is doing some cool things with restoring historic homes and even offering classes to his community in Hannibal, Missouri. His name is Bob Yapp.
Oh that's cool, thanks for sharing it!Ā
There is a really good show called Restored. He goes and restores old houses back to how they originally were.
I agree. I just meant criminal as in a crime of morality because you can't go to Home Depot and pick up hand carved walnut built-in cabinets. I like the idea of a community project too, using trade and talent to preserve, restore, and keep for the next generations.
Considering the level of reno done, they certainly could have rented a storage unit to store the original doors, trim, other architectural details to restore and install. Would have added value tremendously. My parents were able to do that when diy ing a historic property renovation, with a much smaller budget comparatively. But people have no desire to spend time doing things well when cheap and easy is a quicker investment turn around. I know. I was 13 when they started, 19 when we finished, including reglazing every window, stripping and reworking every door, mantel, and searching through every antique or junk store for period hinges, door plates and knobs, in the days of no internet and paper catalogs.
Bought for 1.1 a few years ago, now listed at 5.5?
Ok buddy, best of luck.
White paint is very expensive, apparently.
I mean, I donāt love the all white look either, but if you look at old photos this was clearly a gut job after the 1 million purchase price. Taking a 10k square foot house down to the studs on Nahant definitely was more expensive than just adding white paint.
A new roof alone would probably cost more than my house
Saw the price, and just knew it would be painted all white inside. It didn't disappoint.
My tastes are not inline with the rest of the posts so far, but this would be an insta buy for me if I were to win the lottery.
that's because they are jealous
They basically ruined the interior. š
So white and cold.
The exterior is stunning.
Maybe I'm a basic bitch , but I love it !
I thought the inside looked nice, if bland... then I saw the original šĀ
All white everythingĀ
It has been completely neutered , how sad.
I have to come back to this entire thing, because I want it, and I love it, and I am gobsmacked!
I am SO sick of beige, white, grey, and black. Sterile AF. Thank goodness for the green and red rooms upstairs! Just recently, I saw a before and after renovation of the Home Alone house: I thought I was looking at the 90s version and a black and white photo. Turns out, the black and white version was a real life version of the 2020 renovation. So sad where the trends have gone. Even colors for baby clothes are super muted.
Even if I had the money for such a property, Iād balk at paying to heat those 10ā ceilings all goddam winter.
Netflix mystery romance limted series starring fading a list actress location.
Stunning
I live in a century home and would not reno my house to that degree. I love the character of my 125 year old house and all the quirks it has. That said, I think the reno was done with what they expected a buyer with that kind of money would want.
Well, I think the house and Reno is stunning. I also hate the all white, but considering this house was gutted and redone, if I had a spare 6 million lying around I would buy this and just add some paint. Definitely too cold to leave a big house like that all white, but I get the all white for selling purposes- paint colors can be so specific to the home buyer. I guess I am in the minority.
I think the inside works in this case, but it's not my taste. The exterior and location are stunning, though. Hot damn. 5.5 mil for that location and sq ft isn't bad(I say, from my 700 sq ft rental apt lmao)

You seem so triggered. Are you okay?
