And why do they constantly change it on android / mobile? Sometimes its 3 videos in one line, then two, then four, now its just one. Other times the videos weren't aligned correctly - the gaps between thumbnails didnt line up every 2nd row for some reason.

I realize the result in this post would require more photoshop time than that, but if I was going to photoshop something like this for a YouTube thumbnail, I’d probably spend like 10 minutes making 2 layer masks (one for the eyes one for the skin) and adjusting the curves until it looked good enough for the thumbnail.
The main point is the same: AI can do this in minutes and in exchange for seconds of work. The way we have the world set up, it’s irrational to not use AI for simple stupid shit like YouTube thumbnails.

Change your phones DPi setting. via display/dev settings. This will force the youtube app to see more space and think its a larger screen.
First its not a phone. Second I wont change something in my settings because the youtube devs are too stupid to leave something which has worked this entire time since they released the app

I always increase the dp setting on my Samsung tablet for this exact reason. I know it's a pain but maybe just try a small increase to see if it knocks it into a better view type.

This happened to my mum's tablet, she accidentally turned on Samsung Dex on the drop down panel. Turning it off fixed this for us.
This isnt on Samsung Dex, this is normal view unfortunately. If it was Dex you wouldnt be able to see the bar on the bottom.

I played with this for a while the other day. Youtube app just thinks your tablet is a phone. Adjust the screen zoom and then force stop the app in app info. You should see a change and can adjust it from there to what's right. I personally hate when YouTube fills the whole width of the display, even in portrait mode, so I went into developer settings and made the DPI so small that YouTube thinks my phone is a tablet and I get two thumbnails wide in portrait mode.

Yeah. when I'm in PORTRAIT it's two wide, obviously it would be more in landscape. I was just saying how I changed it. YouTube likely changed the DPi where it thinks your tablet is a phone. Adjust screen zoom or change the smallest width setting in developer options. Then restart the tablet and hope it fixes itself.
It’s been like this for at least a year for me. The YouTube App that came installed on my Android tablet is fine but I installed reVanced and it looks like this. My guess is it’s just scaling the output that’s supposed to be used for phones.

I've been stuck unable to advance shorts to certain spots due to the videos being unaligned on scrolling
Like if I scroll down, the progression bar is off screen and scrolling down further skips to the next short. So I have to scroll to that next short AND THEN scroll back up and now the short is aligned so I can advance it to the spot I want to rewatch.

Youtube and most android apps supports Android phones properly, not Android tablets. OP issue just proves my point. Most apps are just the streched out version of the phone app, with not much tought put into it for tablets, more bugs and visual glitches. Desktop sites are fine on a tablet if you ask me but yes having a mobile Youtube app is better, if it works lol.

No you're not free to do whatever you want on Android, you're more free but not completely free, you don't have root/admin access. If you buy a Windows tablet thenn you can to whatever you want, because you have admin rights.
Most android apps have fine support, and it’s getting better, there are some apps like skillshare that have a problem with landscape mode, but android has a setting to force it. Other than than that, I can’t think of any apps that don't work as they should on my samsung tablet.

Look closely, does that look like a phone? Its a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ with a 12.4 inch screen. So the thumbnail fills an entire screen which is almost as big as most laptops.
And it hasnt been like this until the lastest update yesterday. I could see about 9 to 12 videos on the home page and not just one big thumbnail (which is so big you have to scroll to see it entirely).
