I finally upgraded my phone recently. On my old phone using Chrome (a version that would no longer update because the phone was to old) I could read the alt text by finger holding to pull up options which would show a preview of the alt text. If the alt text was to long another finger hold on the alt text would bring it up in full. On my new phone with a current Chrome finger holding on the alt text preview no long open it up. I have been scratching my head on what setting i need to change. I never needed an extenstion before but I suppose there is an extention that changes that behavior? In any case, how to I read the alt text on my new pixel 9x phone with the current Chrome?
I’d just go to explainxkcd or https://m.xkcd.com
Thanks. I guess if I can't sort out the general solution the m version of the site will work.
I noticed this too. Annoying. I usually find out about new comics from this sub though, and the bot has the full alt text, so I just check that.
Chrome 143.0.7499.146, running on an Android 16; Pixel 9 Pro XL Build/BP3A.251105.015.
I just long-press the image and a dialog with options pop up. At the top of the dialog I get the alt text.
Yes, but if the alt text is too long it does not show it in full. I use to do a second long press on the alt text there to show all of it. That no longer works.
I had not noticed this change. Annoying.
Maybe don't second long press the truncated alt text, just second tap it once? But I'm running older hardware. It still responded for both a long press and a tap on my devices for firefox and chrome. Sorry if that doesn't help.
I always tap it and it doesn't work now
Damnit. Why are software upgrades getting worse!??!!
It ceased working a couple of weeks ago.
I'm about to switch to a new phone and I did not need another reason to be annoyed about that 😭
Firefox still works properly.
Yeah, I get that it's been that way forever but from an accessibility point of view XKCD is pretty dogshit. Using the text alternative for images to add something tangential to the image means that you're shafting:
There are far better patterns out there, it's just a very old site design.
