Yeah, this is pretty standard for creative leads once the vision is locked in. Dude probably did his job, handed off the playbook, and now he's chasing the next big check. Happens all the time in games and nobody bats an eye until it's a high profile project everyone wants to fail.
I mean, it's supposed to be Bungies next big live service game. That should include an art director who helps establishes how to add things while staying in theme
Yeah, he'd probably want to get out right before the finish line, before he'd collect any kind of bonus from launch sales. Don't stick around for launch celebration and to see the work he gave 5 years of his life to become complete, standing alongside his team. It's all totally normal. Just random chance the lead concept artist is out shortly after the company comes to an agreement with the artist they stole concept art from. People leave all the time, there's no possible way it could ever have any meaning.
If you don’t follow games enough to see this shit happen regularly then that’s fine lol but we don’t have to get Conspiracy Brain about literally everything.
I don't know how often massive plagiarism on this scale happens, to be fair. So I can't really speak to how often the person responsible leaves before the game launches.
Maybe you can give me some other examples? It's really common so I'm sure there are tons
Yeah, that's another example of multiple key figures leaving before launch and the game coming out in a rough state. Just don't show the other guy this example lol, let him have a few shreds of belief to cling to
It actually doesn’t mean that much does it? I assume the majority of his work is done since the game is about to release. So unless he’s moving onto another project at Bungie, this is basically the perfect time to move on and find something else if he wants to
If I remember right most of the times people leave a studio is when a project has just finished
There are programmers that will be needed to stay and balance the game, update it, etc. Artists not so much, their work is done and can freelance if needed.
this is incredibly common for folks in these positions at companies like this, especially for folks in high-visibility roles who are inevitably in talks with other companies for similar roles
yeah the latest dev blog video looks awesome. People are gonna hate just cause big corporation, greedy, optional microtransactions, etc
I’m sure it’ll be a solid addition to a new-ish video game genre without any 1st party releases. Also art looks pretty sweet so feel that the director leaving at this stage isn’t so impactful like others have said
Marathon looks like a game that was scientifically created in a lab to maximize my disinterest. I think the art looks horrible and the gameplay looks mid at best.
I'm ready for Bungie to die and a more talented, less corporate studio take its place.
It’s amazing how different perceptions can be, when I first saw marathon, all those years back, i felt like it was created to maximise my INTEREST, and i absolutely adore the art style. They’ve made some questionable decisions with the game and the art (in its current state) has some rough edges but MAN do I still love it, and judging by the latest news, they’re moving in the right direction with the gameplay.
Only goes to show how different tastes, interests and expectations are in people. You’ll come across lads putting a hand on their heart and saying stuff diametrically opposed to your opinion..
The fact that it's so different is nice when so few games try to look unique today. I also like the less cluttered look of textures compare to almost everything the past couple generations.
Colour scheme is one of the very basics of design.
If you put representative screenshots of the game next to Apex Legend, or indeed any game, I don't believe even a casual observer would get confused as to which is which. There aren't many games like that today. Hence, striking and unique.
The art itself is beautiful imo, the artist they stole from made amazing pieces, and I'd say the announcement trailer also looked amazing, however inbetween that and the gameplay reveal something must have gone terribly wrong because the game looks ass.

Apparently he was noticeably absent when Bungie showed the game to media in April. He was absent from recent vid doc which seems appropriate. But with so much bad press over the last year and the summer, is it possible that he left or was let go earlier this year and was asked to delay this news until they had a decent press beat like this vid doc?
Also, like many of you i was really down on this game or couldnt care less, that is, until I got into the most recent play test...
Realistically, it's likely because everything is set in stone and he's got people there to take over the direction
Definitely the case, but people will doom post and dunk on it regardless.
I mean the game will probably be a colossal flip anyway, but that's an entirely separate issue lol.

Surely it’s not because Bungie has been caught plagiarizing art for years now this time completely derailing their game launch.
This instance? No, it really isn't
Always a promising sign
People leave before games ship all the time
Who will direct the art of this game that is probably well past that stage??? /s
I mean, it's supposed to be Bungies next big live service game. That should include an art director who helps establishes how to add things while staying in theme
To be fair, didn't do any art directing before that so probably going to make no difference anyways lol
With Bungie it's never a great sign.

Is this the cope? This is the same kind of stuff that happened when Destiny 1 was going to launch.
Destiny 1 was scrapped and basically remade in like a year. This is nothing like that.

puts my hand over your shoulder and looks you straight into your face politely son … let me tell you something

Yeah but the problem is their first party titles are virtually non-existent right now.

Hi there, can you provide examples that show this is incredibly common that matches the same context of the Joseph Cross situation?
This game is DOA.
Nah it looks fun. I can gurantee people that are saying DOA and downvoting me haven't even looked at the game since May.
yeah the latest dev blog video looks awesome. People are gonna hate just cause big corporation, greedy, optional microtransactions, etc

It is fun
It looks fantastic from what they’ve shown, can’t wait.
Which YouTuber gave you that opinion?
My own eyes.
lol
I guess we’ll see
I've been playing the alpha and so far it's been very fun. I don't think it'll flop.
Then you’re delusional
You think people leaving arc raiders for this?
I'm only playing arc raiders because I'm waiting on marathon and I only heard of arc raiders is because of marathon. 🤣
They are catering to different audiences.
There's no need for them to compete head to head. They are different experiences.
You can’t be serious…
Live service extraction shoot is nothing like…live service extraction shooter…what
You aren't worth arguing with
To be fair ARC Raiders has an insane amount of friendlies that are too cowardly to sos I'm hoping Marathon has a more aggressive audience.
Do people still get their opinions from youtubers? That's a nice throwback
nah
its in their best interest to make it good cause if its not bungie is dead
I dunno about this game, chief

RIP Lance my hero
LOL
He was finished plagiarising the art?
Another Sony Concord Like.
Marathon looks like a game that was scientifically created in a lab to maximize my disinterest. I think the art looks horrible and the gameplay looks mid at best.

The art is hideous, IMO. I know art is subjective but, like, how can anyone like this.

I agree. I know some people like it but it's so far outside of what looks enticing to me that I can't imagine it. But that's also ok.
The fact that it's so different is nice when so few games try to look unique today. I also like the less cluttered look of textures compare to almost everything the past couple generations.
I'd describe it as at least striking.
The game looks like a super sterile version of Halo and a few other games with the most generic and uninspired details imaginable, IMO.
How the fuk is it unique…. It’s halo and apex removed of all life….
How is it different or unique? Its basically Apex legends with different colour scheme.
Colour scheme is one of the very basics of design.
If you put representative screenshots of the game next to Apex Legend, or indeed any game, I don't believe even a casual observer would get confused as to which is which. There aren't many games like that today. Hence, striking and unique.
youre on crack dude
The art itself is beautiful imo, the artist they stole from made amazing pieces, and I'd say the announcement trailer also looked amazing, however inbetween that and the gameplay reveal something must have gone terribly wrong because the game looks ass.
Well, art is subjective 🙂
Bungie will be dead within a year. Calling it now.
A whole year?
I'm thinking months at most, but be happy to be wrong.
You’ll be happy then
Let's hope so, but I'm afraid it's hopium.
Hahaha
That’s comforting.
The game is releasing in 3 months. Pretty much everything at this point is locked in visually and he’s on to the next job.
until they delay it indefinitely again
Until a second plane I mean second systemic art theft discovery hits the studio.

With all the negative press they really need to make this game good or it it’s gonna die
He will miss the performance-based bonus of the game success.
Concord 2.0 perhaps?
That would be that moba shooter game that comes out next month, this one will be concord 3
KILLA KILLA ZEDS DEAD
Is he the dude who stole all the art work awhile ago? Or did they get rid of that one already
They claimed it was a random person who didn't work there anymore (convenient). But he'd still bear responsibility for those under him.
what a great omen
THIS WILL RECOVER
i hope
The Mind's Eye special.

im enjoying how much this sub wants this game to fail lol
Y'all don't understand. He was so happy and so proud of his work he wanted it to be the final thing he ever worked on for the studio.
It's a bomb
