Hello! I’m traveling from Spokane, WA to Dubois on Christmas Eve to see family.

I was planning on going through Montana to Riverton and from there onto Dubois.

Does anybody have suggestions on which way would be best or the safest bet to avoid weather/snowy conditions?

I would like to avoid Teton pass but looking for suggestions. Thank you!

  • I have driven that route a few times and think I-90 to Laurel, MT then south to Cody, Thermopolis and Riverton will be the best option.

I also like to avoid Teton and Togowtee passes.

Cody seems way out of the way tho. Why not just go straight south to Greybull, then it's a pretty straight shot to Thermopolis, Shoshoni and then Riverton. It's the way I'd go in my semi truck all the time. And the only way to avoid bad weather is to keep an eye on the forecast and try to time it right. Only alternative routes are 15 or 25. But I just checked the weather for dubois and the high on Christmas is 43 so op should be fine either way as long as they avoid those passes and drive during the day. I'd expect a pretty smooth and scenic trip honestly. Haven't checked anywhere else along their trip tho. Might be worse around Missoula.

It's actually shorter through Cody both miles and time (at least according to Google Maps). Also, in my opinion, the roads are better. I could be biased on the roads since I like Cody better than Greybull.

I have done both routes more than a few times. I would agree with going through Cody vs Greybull being a bit shorter and better roads

  • Good move avoiding Teton pass, they just closed it for the next 24-36 hours due to wet slides.

  • Google’s suggested route is the one I would recommend. There is no projected inclement weather through Cody, meeteetse, or Thermopolis for this week.

You can download the “Wyoming 511” app to get up to date highway conditions. They are only showing a “yellow” status north of Cody. You’re more likely to have a harder time crossing western Montana with the current conditions.

    This is the way

  • I stopped in Dubois on my way to the Grand Tetons. I wish I knew how to share a picture but Jesus it was the coolest thing ever to me

The scenery is second to none imo. I wish the drive was shorter from where I am to there but I always look forward to it. The views are just indescribable.

I was right in town it’s a sunset picture right over honey house, fluffy cow and rustic pine. Oh man it’s been one of my favorite pictures since

  • Are you REALLY asking how to avoid weather in Wyoming in the winter?
