Yawl, they're gutting the national labs and closing major research institutions. This isn't a single story about a single facility, this is a nationwide STEM depression. Corporations are scooping up ex-federal scientists left and right. It's a generational loss in science and technology research. And since federal research is usually the really early-stage fundamental science research, we won't even feel the impacts of this cratering in science for decades. But it will be profound.
Did not have old white men on my list of people who would dismantle the ability to make accurate weather forecasts, tbh. That’s kind of their whole identity isnt it?
This has nothing to do with AI. Even the local Microsoft data centers that grew out of this project have nothing to do with AI are mostly self-sustaining.
Now the new data center-projects... if that bubble pops some time soon I doubt they will even be finished.
Because it's a really bad idea. First there have been health issues for communities surrounding the current supercomputing projects which need to be explored. They should also be required to generate their own power and purify city wastewater to cool their equipment. This would be an opportunity to burn Wyoming trash to make power. There are several countries including China and Sweden who are burning their garbage trash to cleanly, efficiently and environmentally solve a few problems at once. .
Its not that kind of supercomputer center. You are thinking of the new data centers. This is more of a research and weather modeling complex. It takes a fraction of the resources that ai data centers require.
UW is one of the backbone sites of the original CERN internet. When I was a kid a huge chunk of the science library was a supercomputer of that time. It was massive and probably didn't have the computing power of a ten year old iPhone.
the cheyenne supercomputer was up for sale not long ago. $480,000 sale price. cheap for the hardware.... but you had to move it and it didn't come with the cabling (fiber or copper). still.
“The National Center for Atmospheric Research,” Hayhoe continued in a social media post, “supports the scientists who fly into hurricanes, the meteorologists who develop new radar technology, the physicists who envision and code new weather models, and yes — the largest community climate model in the world.
Is that why the weather forecasts are always wrong?
Blame it on the mountains. Mountains create their own weather, making forecasting difficult. Move away from the mountains and forecasting becomes more predictable. FIFY.

Science will become for-profit, industry secrets.

It’s because the Trump administration halted the climate tracking that this supercomputer is being used for.
Wyoming voted for this

Not to worry. Just Neanderthals saying ugga bugga, baby to science! Got what we voted for.

So because accuracy isn't perfect, we should just give up?!
Isn’t perfect is an understatement. More like wildly inaccurate. So yes, a reasonable person would say the cost is not worth the result.
This is a completely insane idea.
