• This is mostly just a map of population. Some states punch above their weight (CA) and some below (WV, FL) but total GDP is mostly related to population. Per capita is a little different. Florida stands out pretty shockingly as the biggest under performer but that is really the only significant surprise.

If you click on the original post, the top comment did the math to account for per capita. Wyoming is specifically listed in it and you are correct that the numbers are way different.

Some of those numbers don't seem to make sense but I'm too lazy to digest them right now, plus the horses want feeding. Will try to take a better look later today.

BTW, ironic that I barely touched a horse in my 5 years in Wyoming and am now a barn slave here in Vermont.

Perhaps it's the large amount of retirees in Florida that skews that percentage

Most likely. But states like AZ also have a large number of retirees and perform better.

Because so many in Florida are retirees. That tilts the scale quite a bit

  • What’s your point? The state with the lowest population is WY and the state with the highest population is CA?

  • If this map was adjusted to account for illegal narcotics manufacturing, specifically meth, Wyoming would at the least be somewhere in the middle.

And where do you get this info from? I was informed most meth was now made by Mexican Cartels or Biker gangs. Which Wyoming has very little of. Mexican cartel Mexicans are different than regular Mexicans by the way.

The labs that get busted are Mexican Cartels and Biker gangs in other states. Wyoming cookers don't get busted, lack of population equals lack of law enforcement equals easier to get away with massive cook operations. Source: trust me bro.

Valid point. WY where the per capita drug abuse and alcoholism is only surpassed by the per capita gun ownership. Not everyone is a substance abuser, but 100% own guns.

  • Ohio is much higher than I thought it would be.

  • Naw, tied with Vermont! The Wyoming-Vermont connection strikes again

  • The lowest state happens to be the highest percentage of people who think trump is doing a good job!

  • What do you expect WY is least populated and the natural resource companies extracting coal, oil, and natural gas all are based in other states. Realistically WY doesn't have enough people to support any businesses building any manufacturing industry. When one does like BWXT the vocal, yocals raise enough racist, bigot, anti-outsider hell on social media that executives drop WY as a consideration. Plus, outside companies would require drug testing on the regular, rather than only when an accident or loss time incident occurs (coal & oil) so the methed out workforce that is here couldn't/wouldn't be able to work there anyways.

    You're miserable.

  • We should allocate senators proportional to GDP instead of two per state. End political welfare to lazy backward white ‘christian’ nationalists.

GDP or population. Grew up in Wyoming, live in CA now. A lot of love still for WY, but not because of its population or GPD.

Such a similar story here. Go Pokes.

  • Wow Wyoming what the heck

You're aware that this is basically a population map, right?

Yeah but with Jackson plus oil and coal and energy resources and a university, Wyoming should be above Vermont and Alaska

    And Alaska? Absolute lunacy

Jackson doesn’t generate money anymore, it’s simply a tax haven for billionaires.

Vermont has 4 full fledged universities and 3 more 4 year colleges. Wyoming has UW and...? Alaska also has more universities than Wyoming.

Nothing against UW; I had a great time there and got a very good education at a bargain price.

There are multiple ski resorts in VT. Killington is roughly the same size as Jackson Hole. Stowe, Jay Peak and Sugarbush are also fairly sizeable.

The coal business is not doing so well.

In some ways VT and WY have similar challenges. Both economies rely heavily on tourism. Both are seeing old industries/agriculture fade and are slow to adapt to the new economy. Being tiny doesn't help. I like it here though and have been lucky enough to make a good living in uncertain times.

Smallest population, lowest GDP. UW grad here who lives in VT, the 2nd lowest state.

Yeah but Wyoming should and does have more going on than Vermont

Have you ever been to VT?

    No why

I've lived in both. Gives a little more perspective.

Wyoming is approximately 0.169% of US population and, according to this map, makes up 0.2% of GDP. So, not bad. You can run the numbers on some of the other states, if you wish.
