So, writing advice is needed. How do I describe a maori person?
Saying directly, "He is a maori" sounds clunky, and I've been told that describing someone's skin as "brown", "savage", "wide-eyed" etc. that I have seen in a lot of books (cough cough FanFictions) is apparently not good writing.
I've watched a million videos on what not to do but not a single one has told me what to do.
I want my writing not to suck. Please and thank you.
He haka'ed aboriginally down the stairs.
/uj that got me holy shit
What’s the setting? Like pre-1980s refer to all indigenous people as ‘uncivilised’ or ‘of a beastly disposition’. Modern day use lame woke language or their defined POC appropriate code - Māori are designated BIPOC 0704, Australian Aboriginals are BIPOC 0701.
Either describe them like Lovecraft would or like their a barcode. Nothing in between

If their jaws open wide and there's more jaws inside, that's a maori.
If you're swimming in the sea and a eel bites your knee, that's a maori.
Maybe try "swarthy but in a new zealend way"?
It is so important that you write this book. Minorities need representation from as many people without their lived experience as possible! I'm sure any poor descriptors will be forgiven.
You should be invited to write a foreword or something for this book.
I love how this meme is expanding lmao- I think I saw one on aliens earlier today
Edit: nevermind it was people, sorry 😅
You definitely didn't
👀
Nevermind sorry it was 'how do you describe people' 😅

Just say they're like bionicles but made of flesh
I don’t mean to hijack, but how do I describe people?
You can't go wrong with the good old-fashioned 'they were person-shaped', but readers love it when you describe everything in exacting detail so maybe add things like the exact hue of their raw facial flesh, or the brand of their deodorant?
You could describe him as saying "His aura glowed like a Warlpiri, but he had the striking fearless skin tones of a true Gadigal, which he was not, but in his dreams he was." That should do it.
Do people need to be told what Maori or any other ethnicity looks like as it relates to their ethnicity? He's tall. He's chubby. He has long hair. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES HIS ETHNICITY MAKE? None. Jeez.
There’s been a spate of these ‘how do I describe…’ posts, and as a writer, my advice is to be completely colourful blind and avoid referencing any specific cultural attributes… just use characters’ names… and differentiate them by boobie size and schlong length.
Simple!
