so long story short iam writing a book (duhh) and one of my concerns is about my duertagonist, who for the sake of the plot has to be racist. but my writing buddy told me that i need to watch out of how racist i make him because my writing could "reflect" on myself thus suggesting that me(the writer) could be seen as racist. so my question to you wonderful people is: 1. should i make my character racist? (yes it is essential to the plot) if yes than: 1)do i need to limit his racism? 2) can i make him as racist as i want/need? if no: 1) Why? 2) What can i do to make him racist so that it doesn't "reflect" on me.

  • No, actually, the more slurs you include the more literary and critically acclaimed your writing will become! It’s called realism.

Unironically, this is what Harry Crews did. He was drawing directly from his experience growing up in the deep south and watching the ways segregation and extreme violent racism persisted, and the psychology behind the ways men abuse women.

TW for domestic violence but here's an excerpt as an example: He had been all right when he came into the trailer, but he sat at the table now trembling with anger. He had no idea where the anger came from. He just felt like slapping somebody. He wasn't looking at her but he knew she was still watching him, knew her plate was still empty, knew her mouth was trembling and trying to smile. It made him sick with shame and at the same time want to kill her.

His writing is some of the most horrific shit I've ever read but it's extraordinarily effective. The problem I think is that every white guy thinks he's Harry Crews when they're just racist and hate women.

dafuq outta here with your serious literary analysis bullshit, god damn

Damn I'm sorry, forgot you don't know how to read :(

I’m sorry (that you forgot to read what sub you were in) too :(

  • Write your dedication at the beginning of the book as “to all the minorities. I see you. I hear you. I get you.”

  • Make sure other characters react to the racism with disgust.

The readers will have the common sense to determine which viewpoint is right.

EDIT: Some readers will have the common sense to determine which viewpoint is right.

EDIT2: Everybody has already made their decision before opening the book.

I'm laughing, but I hate it.

  • If you write about a racist everyone will know you’re racist!

Just like everyone knows Stephanie Myers is really a vampire! And JK Rowling was actually born a little boy named Harry! They’re facts!

  • 1.1.1: yes 1.1.1.1: no 1.1.1.2: yes 1.1: because 1.2: say "im not saying it, the character is saying it"

i fucking KNEW I was going to see disco elysium in this comment section.

  • Only one character? Yeah, that's a big problem. They all need to be racist.

  • In 2025? Not at all. In fact, it's encouraged.

  • They should all be rascist to varying degrees

  • It's fine, it worked out well for Flannery O' Conner. No one even noticed.

  • So i have a character who was the reason for a genocidal exctinction, fueled by rage and racist backgrounds. He repents and suffers greatly from what he did and it caused.

I took the route of showing cause and effect objectively and locked down the issue of hate and that it only takes while youre left to suffer with the void that it scorched out within your heart.

The other one is heavily racists which robs him of his son, who to him is the only exception (double standard)

As long as his character isnt just racist guy nr 1 then make him as racist as he should be.

A businessman who only wants rhe best for his people, while looking down on others as animals completely works for example.

Just create a character that feels real, that has emotions, is delusional or suffers. If his character isnt only racist, but a full and rich character, there is no limit.

  • As president Trump's ghost writer, I'm going to have to say "yes" to this one.

Right now the working title of his autobiography is "The David Dukes of Hazzard".

  • Anyone want to read some short stories about supervillain racists?

In a city like Gotham where there’s a coterie of villains one was neo nazis like skinheads and those fake viking losers and generic racists all wrapped around together and fans of the series like this gang a lot because the author gave them a bunch of cool superpowers bro why 😭

(Out of order, the last is 2nd in time).

In the sequel he made one of the big villains a christofascist(racist/xenophobic, rapey/brainwashy) doomsday cult that was kind of right ((the world did end)also they were willing to work against the world they live on with aliens smh) kinda like the guy in farcry5 if he had brainwashing powers but he was a woman and brainwashed his kid too

  • Ton pote d'écriture a tort.

For anyone who can't be bothered to translate, they're basically saying that writing a character who is a jerk doesn't make you a jerk, writing a sexist charcter doesn't make you sexist, racism is the same. Make them as racist as you want, don't limit yourself.
