In my world, the universe basically consists of multiple cosmic animals swimming around in a universal sea, with humanity living in said animals, a bit like parasites or bacteria. There are multiple different kinds of world-animals, with different structures, et cetera. I currently have 3 worlds developed, Ellraan (The one Ive worked on the longest, slightly snail-like) Zeiluora (The second world, a bit of a mix between a turtle and biblically accurate angel) And finally, Asratia(Basically an amphibious mouse.)

It might be pretty apparent that I dont really have a name for these world-animals yet, does anyone have any tips on how to name them/ names?

(Also, TLDR for the mods:

Ellraan: the world is an urban fantasy rebuilding after a war between ťwo gods, and there is honestly all a bit too much to just summarize easily. Zeiluora: Some people from Ellraan tried to colonize other worlds, one of them being Zeiluora. Most of them were killed by basically the immunity system. To avoid dying out completely, they made a deal with the world so that they wouldnt die, but basically have to cut up food forever in its intestines. Womp womp. Asratia: Some people (the same that colonized Zeiluora) Also got this one. Sadly, Asratia is a hellhole and most people died, the survivors morphing into firms that would survive easier. A few thousands of years later, a group of humans managed to get to Asratia, and started doing war against the old, now almost unrecognizable original settlers.)

  • Gaiafauna?

I'd suggest Astrafauna, but that'd be space animals in general.

  • Fauna Caelestis simple Latin. loosely translating to creatures of heavenly bodies.

  • A heckin’ chonker

Congrats, you win. All other recommendations will be ignored, as the best answer has been found. Thank you for your submissions /j

  • Bestiamundi - Worldbeast.

    Thats a cool one, thanks!

  • Maybe Ryan

    Now THATS a good one.

In all seriousness in my story theres a moon sized organism which is fully made of cancer tissue. Its name is Teratrauma because it was a cancer that took someone's life and teratoma cancers can have facial features or hair (dont google it, its nightmare fuel). And "-trauma" part of its name was added because this cancer was concious and something happened to it so terribly to the point that this cancer got a PTSD-like reaction of panic laughing and the shit went so bad its been laughing even a billion years after it died because of such traumatic event.

I often feel like i am more fucked up writer than Stephen King or something

  • Celestians could work.

  • Astral Whales

  • Terrafauna Terra-earth/planet Fauna-creature

  • Planets already comes from a word that literally means "wander" plus what it seems to be an agent suffix (so overall "wandering star"). So if all your planets are in fact animals, then I do not see any reason to change the name.

However, building on your request for a different name, I would come back to the Ancient Greek of the etymology and take the word πλανάω which seems to be a verb for "to wander". I would then add something like "zoo" or "bio" as prefix or suffix which I believe (I have not checked it mean animal and life respectively) to create the meaning of "wandering animal" or "living wanderer/wandering life".

If not there, you could look at the cognates of the root verb: - Latin has pālor - Old Norse has flana which led to Norwegian flanta.

If you want you can even go back to the Proto-Indo-European root here : https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/pleh%E2%82%82-

For instance, I would not mind something simplified from Hittite like "Palis?", or from Proto-Hellenic like "Palamet?"

Edit: I would not mind either something derived from the Greek πέλαγος for high sea, this would fit with your universal sea. If you add an agent suffixe to it like the -tes one in Ancient Greek (I have not taken the time to copy it but if you look down the etymology of planet on the Wiktionary you could find it), then you have an agent of the high sea. Or you could mix pelagos and planao above and have your wanderer of the high seas. Might be a bit long (pelagoplanetes?) but if you introduce a naturalistic (or not, who's going to check?) sound change then you could have a shorter word. I guess.

  • Why not just "planets"?

  • Wow I love the idea. How does the immunity system work? Like a hostile ecosystem or an army of sentient beings?

Basically like animals that guard certain areas, and kill stuff that does serious damage to the world. For example, one civilization was almost exterminated by a sickness caused by the world after digging through a part of the world and tried building a computer to commune with the world.

It works slightly different between worlds. The people in Zeiluora have a pretty good relation, since they can produce stuff on the outer layers of their world that help it out, a bit like the bacteria that exist in our intestines.

Asratia is slightly more violent, since that world is actively dying and suffering of an infection of cosmic ticks that suck up nutrients from it. Asratias blood vessels have a function where they create an "angel" any time they receive extensive damage, which basically try to kill anything unfamiliar it finds. The people living in Asratia, the demons, have managed to develop ways to kind of hide from the Angels along with a sixth sense that tells them if an angel is incoming. The humans living on Asratia has no way of telling though, and human colonies are often almost wipes out by angered angels.

Ellraans immune-system is slightly more complex, where it kind of takes control of certain creatures born within itself, and makes them act as its agents. It can create Angels like in Asratia too, but it is rarer. Ellraan also has a system of autostructuring materia, where big concentrations of certain elements basically become sentient as their own individuals and keep track of the materia in their area. These living clumps of materia are generally known as "spirits" or "gods" to the people living in Ellraan.

When Ellraan takes over a human, it usually tries to push said human to positions of power in their civilisations, so it can easier control said civilisations without expending massive resources.

    Sorry for the infodump lol

I kinda want to add a tree-world, but I need to flesh out the cultures on the old ones.

  • I just call the megafuana in space: Astro megafuana

  • Terry Pherma.

  • Animal planet

  • Leviathans might be the most common name for giant space animals. If you want to prioritize communicating the idea quickly instead of sounding creative, I'd go with this.

Similarly, Behemoths are giant land-dwelling creatures.

Other random ideas: Titans, Hosts, Benefactors, gods, angels, Entities, Matriarchs

Bro is just mentioning words at some point

Yeah but we call it Brainstorming so we sound smart.

    Benefactors is too funny 🤣
