Something to consider within r/wicked_edge is that it is an uncommonly cordial sub. What Iām trying to relay is twofold. First, itās a supportive environment. One can post a relatively outlandish personal experience and members are kind enough to follow up with the likes of, āWe love that for you.ā and āymmvā. And second (itās actually a cultural product of my first point) Iām constantly impressed by the ability of those within r/wicked_edge to refrain from comment. Someone can claim the best pre shave is rancid evoo, or they get their best shave from a Cutco steak knife, and the majority of the sub will carry on without comment. This in mind, negative commentary on products discussed within the sub may need to be weighted somehow, because for the most part, theyāre unusual.
I might be missing how this data was put together, but it doesnāt line up with what people actually use. Arko, Astra, Rocca, Barrister & Mann, Noble Otter and other familiar names are missing. And āZingari Man The Merchantā at number two? Thatās surprising.
Donāt get me wrong, I appreciate the effort you put into this, but the everyday experience for people on this sub feels different from what the numbers show.
Yes, changing the arrangement helps show whatās popular and gives a better sense of whatās actually circulating in the market. I think that a purchase is basically a vote of favorability on its own, and a stronger indicator of positive sentiment than a posted opinion.
Yeah. The factory in seki is pretty cool to visit as well. There's a giant razor on one level and you can see all types of blades including lasik cornea peelers.
This is pretty awesome. Thanks for posting. While I have used a number of the products in the past, my only current top 25 in use is Stirling shave soap (electric sheep).
I just bought some candles from Stirling and Electric Sheep was heavily in contention, and it was the last one cut before I bought. Iām guessing youāre a big fan of the scent? I feel like Iāll try at some point
Yeah. I have a stash of it and MWF. Currently working through the Stirling ES. For the summer I generally use Stirling Orange Chill . When I feel like a little more face freeze, I pull out Glacial Lemon. I've had the puck of lemon for a few years now.
While it is so precious to do this kind of data analysis, the results, as far as it goes with my milage, don't match the truth. Just as an example 6c can't be over mercur progress on my milage. Or maybe it just talks about how many times people talked about a product with Jo sign of quality.
Very nice! Would be interesting to track this over time. I would expect the Blackbird to move up. I think a lot of people (myself included) got it during the November sale.
I was just getting ready to do this, was thinking ABSA but like this way better. Just kiddinā I donāt know what the hell Iām talking about but appreciate this.
I appreciate seeing where the products I use show up on the list: Clubman, Fatboy, Slim Adjustable. It's also opening my eyes to some things I hadn't considered. Nicely done.
I have a sampler pack of razors I just started with (may have some if those brands) and a pack of pucks Iāll be using until Spring probably. My balm is also a fairly big bottle. Iāll be happy to go down the rabbit hole when I get through all of that
Iām curious how something like #34 Arko Shaving Soap Stick includes in its tldr, āā¦polarizing industrial scent.ā while including zero negative reviews?
I would expect āpolarizingā to be represented by an inverted bell curve. So here, many thumbs up paired with many thumbs down; which would seem representative of Arko.
Love the idea! What thresholds are you using?
When looking for certain fan favorite products, I have a feeling that you are misclassifying positives as neutrals.
Also, it could help to get more granular by adding 2 middle ground categories.
Are you ranking based on a postās sentiment, product mentions across multiple comments and posts or what? Are you weighing for upvotes or just account specifics and engagement?
Keep it up, itās something Iād genuinely use!
I havenāt worked with roberta specifically(I think) but I worked with bert and other variants. I think you should find a split in probabilities like 0.1/0.2/0.7 for pos/neutral/neg or something in the model before outputting the sentiment label. basically the softmax layer output. Play around with that, maybe itās a faster fix for apparently neutral actually positive reviews.
You can also look towards VADER, easier to run because itās not an llm, trained on internet slang and generally built for such tasks.
edit: you can try to use a score for your sentiment P[Positive] - P[Negative] and then average/sum those up.
Very cool approach to analyze a sub like that. One thing thatās misleading is the filter function. If you filter by a specific product and for instance itās unique in the list, itāll automatically be ranked number 1, but in reality itās ranked lower compared to all others.
Is there a way to filter by product type? Im looking at what razor to get (moving from cartridge) but not super interested in aftershave, brushes etc. just now...
Just marveling at your work and it is amazing but I don't understand how the confidence score for Muhle Rocca would lower the raw score of 99% to a 92% or the Merkur Progress which has a raw score of 97% is adjusted to only 94%. I suppose being in the A+ is great but not sure what that means either. Sorry if this has been asked already. This has become a lengthy thread lol
Feather, Stirling, Rockwell: maybe the most overrated/overhyped brands ever in wet shaving.
Just my opinion. Feel free to smash that downvote button lol
Thanks for your accurate work, btw
Edit: i would add Henson, its discussed a lot here, and overrated aswell.
This sub skews artisan. Ya think? 𤣠AFAF āØ

Yes. Itās a great group and the tag line of the sub really should be āYMMVā. Lol.
Well-put. I actually decided to browse this sub today to get a break from the "normal" toxicity of the other subs I frequent.
That doesnāt sound healthy. Might I suggest r/puppies
I couldn't agree more with you. An attitude like that in groups related to any hobby is more unique than rare.
Well said sir a good summary of WE.

34
Arko Shaving Soap Stick $
Compare tldr; Turkish budget classic with polarizing industrial scent. Incredible lather for the price. The budget king that actually performs.
š«”
Arkoooooookooooo
Arko army, unite! š«”
š«”šŖ
The smell is polarizing, so Iām not surprised that it doesnāt have a high sentiment rating.
It's still good š
24 sticks & counting over here!

does it

Arko absolutely missed here. Arko. ARKO!
So you're telling me that all year there has been ZERO negative sentiment about a cartridge razor on THIS sub? https://imgur.com/ZteSp6j
I did a quick search and the very first result was negative:

Yeah! Not meaning to be negative here (LOL) but finding these sorts of outliers might help improve your design as well :)

To help verify your data you could compare data with the r/wetshaving lather logs.
People like that Japanese steel huh?
Yeah. The factory in seki is pretty cool to visit as well. There's a giant razor on one level and you can see all types of blades including lasik cornea peelers.

Shaved with a Feather today. Hard to beat.

Nice! Iām a big fan of executive man and Haverford. Just bought D-503 to give it a shot
Did you conduct a power analysis as well?
This is awesome BTW
Fricken love Stirling. Great customer service as well.
Thanks. š
My point exactly!

This is cool. lol just yesterday (I think) I mentioned how much I loved my 6S

Very cool that you did this. Thank you.
This is very impressive work! I will definitely be diving into this in a deeper way. Great job and thanks for posting it!
Dang I have none of this stuff

I Just miss NĆvea sensitive aftershave and merkur 34c, wich are quite popular and solid choices. Pinaud being at top is a surprise

Looks like AI generated, what is your source? Was there a survey or it's just marketing for few.
Wow ! This is cool
Love this! Super cool to see whatās been popular and continues to work!
Can you describe how you did this? Reddit API/scraping for posts then a python sentiment library?

I'm not much a "top list" kind of guy.Ā But, my unpopular top 3 would be:
Arko
Derby bladesĀ
Every not overpriced <40$ razors
