Absolutely tragic. Reminds me of the poor woman that got killed on her way home from work. Seems like perpetrators are getting comfortable enough now to kill/harm at the most mundane and public places now.
What can be done to protect women in the future? A security guard in each train compartment? No ride lists for violent passengers like one warning and you can’t ride anymore?
I’m truly and deeply disgusted that in addition to the rail infrastructure all over the country breaking down at a rapid pace you can’t even ride the functioning public transit without the risk of immolation in addition to all of the other transit based crimes that exist. I guess we should all carry fire smothering emergency blankets in our bags because this stuff isn’t likely to just resolve on its own.
26 is so so incredibly young and now she’s going to be healing for years and her scar tissue will have to be operated on for the rest of her life but the man who did it will be healthy enough to at least start his prison sentence and maybe he’ll die in prison from old age if the sentence is long enough but it still does not feel like anything close enough to justice to me.
Sure there’s the chance that he’ll brag about his crimes to the wrong inmate and they’ll do some violence on him in turn but that’s not the same as legislation that will make the public transit system safer so even that isn’t comforting in the grand scope of these societal issues concerning violence against women.

Last year after Debrina Kawam was set on fire,
we predicted this would happen more often. I also seem to remember u/Catpooedinmyshoe posted a thread about a woman being set on fire, but I apologize, I can't find it atm. Others have posted the same, but if you search the sub, they'll pop up. If I get the time later on, I'll look and edit this comment.

What's the repercussions going to be? A prison sentence where that asshole will have a bed, 3 square meals, a chance at education, and still be alive. The repercussions are way to lenient for crimes like this where the victim is left scarred physically, mentally and emotionally. What are the perpetrators supposed to fear if prison offers them all those things whilst the victim has to rebuild themselves. The punishment needs to fit the crime. Set that fucker on fire and see how he likes it, and just before the flames consume him, put them out, let him heal.

I was travelling in Malaysia many years ago and got to experience a "women-only" carriage on the train/subway there. There are specific, well-lit and well-monitored areas (cameras and security guards sometimes) for women to stand at before they enter the train.
When I commented on a FB discussion about having this in Canada, people got upset with me. If I recall, their thinking was we're not a third-world country and it was unnecessary, or at the very least, implying we were not a safe place.
The reality is NO PLACE is safe for many women - why not create a safe space on public transit? Frankly, a lot of people DON'T want to take public transit because they encounter people who are rude, mentally ill or looking to cause trouble. When all anyone wants is to get to work in one piece.
But hey, no one wants to talk about it. And certainly no one wants to be faced with a very obvious visual implication that they live in a place where more than half the population feels unsafe.
I also want to add that after a long day of work, it is exhausting to maintain hyper awareness to ensure your personal safety. I just want to go home and live my life.
