However, in March this year, family recorder Judge Laura Moy ruled that changing D’s surname would ‘constitute a further rupture in the link she has to her father in a way that is not justified or proportionate’.
She said that the child’s surname is ‘a part of her identity and provides an important connection to her father and paternal heritage’.

What the actual hell. The mother that carried that child should be able to choose the surname. That's absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. What a horrific miscarriage of justice to force a rapist deadbeat "father's surname on this innocent child.
Maybe just me, but I think kids should inherit their mother's surname for the most part. Like as an only child to a single mother, why do I have my dead-beat-sperm-donor's surname? Societies were matrilineal at many points in history. It's really practical since you may not know who the biological father is (not without genetic testing) but you'd always know who the biological mother is bc the child physically came out from her. 🤷🏼♀️

I have my mum’s surname. Growing up I assumed it must be common - I was surprised and saddened when I discovered it’s not. I also had problems with an application one time when they asked for my mother’s maiden name, I put the same name she has now and got flagged with “mother’s maiden name cannot be the same as current name”. Thankfully, they apologised and fixed it when I complained.

As a child of rape, this sickens me so fucking much.
I don’t even want to think about how fucked up this would have had me, it was already bad enough. My bio mom did everything she could to protect me from her rapist and get me as far away from him as possible and paid with her life for it. That man will never be part of my identity, and having the state defend and force that on another little girl makes me so sick.
