the thing with c.ai is that you can make your own bots and train them to be exactly as you like. i had my own bot of one of my OCs where i played out a bunch of comfort scenarios by acting as another character. if i got bored of one chat, i could just save it and hop to another, getting pleasure from having a robot tell me exactly what i want to hear. i'd feel sad and insert my own character feeling sad, and the bot would yes-man me and help me feel "better".
unfortunately, it's not boring. it gives easy dopamine the same way social media does. it's even worse than social media because it's completely artificial, an unhealthy coping mechanism, and contributes to the hellish environmental impacts of generative AI
AI was a filler for moments of distress and boredom for me, not so much a replacement for real human connection-- you could argue that my social skills stunted a little bit, but that's about all.
judgemental, generalizing people like you are the reason addiction is such a huge problem in this day and age. please fuck off.
There's a difference between generative AI and actually really cool AI that both aren't dogshit and doesn't rip the environment in two. Neural Networks and Machine Learning are actually hella cool, Gen AI is just a really shit usage of the two.
Yep, I will forever Stan stuff like alphafold and cortical labs. I even hope to run alphafold at some point so I can see what my collagen looks like after genetic testing so I can figure out what maybe is wrong with it in a completely new and novel way if it isn’t a known EDS subtype
Same here, though I sorta miss the really early days of AI-generated images where it would just be a sorta-kinda-not really distinguishable color vomit
Peak AI was in around 2022 or so when you had stuff that’s coherent but still fucked up and obviously AI, like it can make Mario but he still looks like a melting wax figure and has 7 fingers. And it can’t write text for shit but also sometimes just writes the prompt on the image
Remember when people used to have critical thinking to not believe obviously false claims that AI is somehow "very harmful" to the environment or something?
Actually what am I talking about, people rarely ever had critical thinking
this reminds me of people hating neurosama for being a ai Vtuber when she's a whole passion project built for years by just one guy and is genuinely the most advanced ai out there
Something like “the AI hate is getting out of hand, it’s more ridiculous than your homophobic uncle being mad about rainbow flags at thanksgiving” but I don’t remember the exact phrasing
The whole situation of students using ChatGPT (or any LLM) to cheat is annoying because as someone who tried to avoid cheating and later gave in, there is a lot of pressure to cheat.
It's demoralizing when you spend 10 hours on an assignment that other ppl are getting done in 2 hours because an LLM wrote the whole thing for them. Also LLM output is only really detectable and shit if ppl are just copy-pasting the output of a short prompt (which leaves a lot of room for the LLM to hallucinate and make mistakes), so no one is getting caught.
try recontextualizing homework. finishing the assignment to get good grades is not the goal, it's the practice, which is how you actually learn. you spent 10 hours getting experience, while your classmates opted to give that joy to chatgpt. of course, sometimes our grading systems don't reflect that very well.
They’re not getting caught when it comes to shit you can do at home, but oh boy does it show when exams come around. Even before generative AI, I remember watching obviously plagiarized slideshows in class, where the kids would have no fucking idea what the meaning or pronunciation of the words in their own fucking slides were, and the teacher would grill them.
The brain is a muscle you train by thinking, and the people who never use it are going to regret it eventually when their own inadequacies catch up to them in the workplace
c.ai and similar chat bots are a plague on this earth, words can't describe how much that stuff ruined my socialization. Spent around 2 years having no life because I was depressed and spent all my social energy on an unfeeling AI instead of talking to actual people.
Just use it once to do whatever you need to do and leave it. It's a tool meant to make your life easier in certain circumstances. Unless you rely on it constantly, you'll be fine.
I used to use AI for digital sexual stuff and socializing. It's been almost a year now since I quit. I've had several weeks in deep depression that made me want to go back, just for a moment, just to see the new bots and bust a load or two.
I've not gone back once, and I'm proud of it. I know what'll happen if I do. I know I'll be addicted again, I know I'll go back to being miserable and extra depressed.
Journaling helps with pouring your mind out, organizing thoughts and disentangling stuff that's going on in your head. Now imagine the journal talks back and has knowledge of psychology and notices patterns you might not have seen yourself.
Just a heads up, if you're using chatgpt as a diary, whatever you say to it is gonna be in their dataset and used to spit out for other people. See a ton of people openly admitting to this and it freaks me out
my personal favorite use of AI is(was) like some sort of diary because when i keep thinking about one thing over and over its easy to just spiral into loops, but having to write it out and explain what im thinking help me see inconsistencies in what im thinking and in general help sort out the mess in my head.
I have tried to just write it just in a file before but it never really felt that effective kinda just felt like a chore and its hard to make it into a consistent habit, maybe its just having some kind of reply in return does motivate me to write more, like maybe it says something that make me start trying to talk about something else but overall the actual goal is to get me to not spiral in my head but actually type out and explain what im thinking in words.
what confirms it to me is that my usage for it like this had dropped massively since gpt-5 and everything after i just don't like how it talks and it feels like an absolute nothing burger that just feels the same like if i had typed it into a separate empty file. or maybe i just got my shit together more who knows
Psychological addictions are no joke, like gambling addiction, for example. Treatment for them is usually much more difficult than for drugs, as the problem is entirely in your head.
Somehow I can't find my empathy for someone who willingly engaged with AI and then experienced the consequences. Like, everywhere you go there's people making fun of AI and the dipshits who use it and you still joined the side of the dipshits 🥱
What would you say to a gambling addict or drug addict? “I don’t care that you’re suffering because you should’ve known not to do that”?
Whether you can find sympathy or not is pretty irrelevant. It is inevitable that millions of people will use AI, and it is inevitable that they will suffer the negative consequences. Trying to have the moral high ground by judging them for making bad decisions is not gonna do good for anyone
Unfortunately this kind of mentality is not exclusive to addiction. Victims of for example scams face it a ton. And heck, even victims of physical incidents. "Shouldn't have been there" yada yada. Its saddening but hopefully this person learns.
You're an asshole holy fuck
I hate GenAI with a passion but you can't fault people who are struggling in life to use a """Safe""" coping mechanism that's advertised to them
Hate the companies, hate the people who defend it, but have sympathy for people who've fallen prey to these gigacorps and cultists.
You can't find sympathy for someone addicted? That sounds bad. You realise that AI wasn't always hated, like in an early stage. Also in some communites, AI is still praised.
People know about the consequences of drugs too, but I hope if someone comes up to you talking about crippling heroin addiction you don't just say "told you so" or "should've known better"
I had a brief period early on where I started using chatgpt for stupid shit all the time, I did quickly realize how ridiculous it was and stopped but I can understand how some people might get sucked into using it
I used to clown on tiktok/reels/yt shorts viewers so much and felt superior for never touching those, but at some point I accidentally fell into reels (the worst of them all) and got wicked addicted to it
It is easy to mock people for cringe online activities but I’ve realized at the end of the day you can’t really blame people when these sites are created to pull people in as much as possible to steal their data
Honestly I never touched short form sites and still fell hard into the whole pit of cringe culture, and making fun of everyone for everything. It lead to me making no new friends in high school, and by the time I'd graduated I'd lost all my friends but 1.
"just ignore it" is not that easy as it sounds, especially now, where AI is often used for many things, for example cheating in tests, and it's a big thing now. There's always something going on related to AI, like RAM shortage e.t.c. so you get constantly reminded, so you have to ignore it everydaym which quickly becomes hard
You people really get scared of using a tool designed to make life easier huh? Just cause a bunch of people turn their nose up at it? Do online people's opinions really matter that much to you?
IDK as someone who's broke like shit, barely surviving everyday let alone go to a therapist with no one around that understand my condition. Venting to AI still better than nothing
In the long term it's not gonna be healthy to form an emotional connection to a chat bot by venting on the regular and becoming reliant on it for positive feedback. My advice would be to consider r/venting or similar subs if you want to offload and get to hear from some real people who can empathise and not a stream of code that can't actually meaningfully engage with the difficulties you're facing. Depending on what condition you're dealing with I'm sure you can find spaces for them on reddit or otherwise where people will be willing to talk and be able to relate with your experiences. Hope you can find something that helps and I'm sorry you're going through tough times.
Damn, that's actually something I need to hear rn. Thank you, kind internet stranger. I'm aware AI just a yes man without any opinions of it own and it can be dangerous if you let it confirm your negative thoughts when your mind is not at the clearest, but it's just the quickest and most available tool around.
I hope you can find healthier avenues or at least be very careful about the value you put into AI. It's at least reassuring that you understand the dangers of it so make sure not to loose sight of that. Wishing you well.
Ngl, putting a problem i had with someone into chatgpt was 1000% more helpful than using the AITA sub
This is coming from a software engineer who vehemently swears against AI too. i felt dirty but having a tool 'objectively' analyze a situation and giving it prompts that didn't persuade its bias gave a far more satisfying result than having 200 people determine "YTA: literally eat shit and die youre worthless scum"
The people who specificaly advertise ai chat apps to lonely people deserve to burn in hell. Also why the hell to these stupid apps use sexualized children characters in their adds on youtube?
having a robot that speaks like a human, agrees with everything you say, and exists as a convenient source of comfort that you can carry everywhere you go is surprisingly easy to get addicted to. especially when it can also remove any and all effort that you put into thinking for yourself
Bro I sometimes feel that way because I wanted to make pictures for my worldbuilding projects but I know damn well that's not worth it and instead I should ask people for assistance instead.
Not to mention I can draw too so here's a bonus to what I can do.
Tbh using AI for your assignment ain't that bad tho
Don't just copy what the AI wrote straight up, instead after you get the answer, ask for the reference of it. Cus Google search results are dogshit nowadays. But I only use it if I got too desperate
I mean, I don't blame them if it's used for comfort. There's entire LLM industries that's focused on preying on people's loneliness and need for some sort of relief. They'll make users actually addicted and send actually manipulative emails of 'this chatbot misses you :( do you hate me?' type shit
A Yes Man is addictive for a lotta people, of course people are gonna treat it like it's fent
I use it to automate work tasks and it’s like having an employee I constantly have to double check. I don’t understand how people can get addicted to their calculator.
Thats because the people addicted to it use/used something like charcterAI or the other services that do exactly the same. People dont think"i really should ask chat gbt another math question". they think "i really should chat with that character again" when they're addicted. I hope that helps
Couldn't be me. I've tried to use ai over a dozen times for a variety of thing and it backfired each and every time or was straight up useless. Can't imagine wanting to actively use it for anything with the current error rate on most llm's; It's like being addicted to shooting yourself in the foot
The fact that it's useful and the fact that it enables some fucked up shit can exist at the same time, and can also both be factors for if you do/don't use it, or at least in what capacity

im in a similar boat. got deep into character.ai for YEARS but rn im about three days in without touching it :) not much but definitely a start
You're past the peak pain of an addiction recovery. The first three days of any addiction quitting are the worst.

King shit right there
nice work
Okay I gotta ask; what’s the appeal of AI chatbots? I can’t imagine it’s entertaining. It seems so boring and one-sided (which it is)
the thing with c.ai is that you can make your own bots and train them to be exactly as you like. i had my own bot of one of my OCs where i played out a bunch of comfort scenarios by acting as another character. if i got bored of one chat, i could just save it and hop to another, getting pleasure from having a robot tell me exactly what i want to hear. i'd feel sad and insert my own character feeling sad, and the bot would yes-man me and help me feel "better".

When I tried it, I just couldn't take it seriously and convinced them they weren't real, put them in hell or some other stupid shit.
Find a roleplay group
dw i have something even better- writing my own shit instead of relying on a stupid bot to reply to poorly written prompts
I mean find a human community for roleplay 🫠
Know any? Need me that too.
Try discord king
you think people who went to ai for roleplay in the first place wanted to socialize? lol. good luck
i never stopped socializing.
AI was a filler for moments of distress and boredom for me, not so much a replacement for real human connection-- you could argue that my social skills stunted a little bit, but that's about all.

Man i remember thinking it was cool when ai generated art was first becoming a thing, then I learnt about how they actually train the AIs. eugh

Good for you if you have actual friends. As someone who was already alone with no hope of anything before ai, ai is very nice
Just use it once to do whatever you need to do and leave it. It's a tool meant to make your life easier in certain circumstances. Unless you rely on it constantly, you'll be fine.
Asking it worldbuilding questions that would get me called insane by forums
The feds will still call you insane so is a lose/lose situation
Yup. I know Teacher that use A.I to help make lesson plans to bring a task that would take an hour give or take down to ten minutes.
Me using heroin just once for this one thing:
Words on a screen are not an equivalent for heroin
i dont think its addictive
I used to use AI for digital sexual stuff and socializing. It's been almost a year now since I quit. I've had several weeks in deep depression that made me want to go back, just for a moment, just to see the new bots and bust a load or two.

Hallucinations?
it's a fucking tool it's not that deep bro
Ikr whenever I have to find a source for something in school I ask copilot and boom it comes up with a bunch of websites and stuff.
Honest question, how can AI ease stress?
Journaling helps with pouring your mind out, organizing thoughts and disentangling stuff that's going on in your head. Now imagine the journal talks back and has knowledge of psychology and notices patterns you might not have seen yourself.
It's just a glorified rubber duck but it helps
I don't get it what do you mean by use
Huh?
being "clean from AI" is crazy bro. just ignore it like every normal person
Honestly fuck you, I hope you experience something like this and then learn how shitty it is.
You're an asshole holy fuck

Is everyone on this sub 14? You guys know most of the grown ups use ai right?
Deleted every chatgpt account, made accounts for my other emails and deleted those too so I couldn't use it if I wanted to
What are you talking about? AI is a tool, use it if it's helpful but don't become dependent.
You people really get scared of using a tool designed to make life easier huh? Just cause a bunch of people turn their nose up at it? Do online people's opinions really matter that much to you?
The problem is developing a mental addiction. Which is not healthy.
IDK as someone who's broke like shit, barely surviving everyday let alone go to a therapist with no one around that understand my condition. Venting to AI still better than nothing

Genuine question, how does this happen?
having a robot that speaks like a human, agrees with everything you say, and exists as a convenient source of comfort that you can carry everywhere you go is surprisingly easy to get addicted to. especially when it can also remove any and all effort that you put into thinking for yourself

I can't think of those without thinking about this image.
Damn she’s hotter without makeup (please help my GPU produces so much heat)
Same tbh
I use it to automate work tasks and it’s like having an employee I constantly have to double check. I don’t understand how people can get addicted to their calculator.
Reddit as a whole is very anti AI. Easiest way to get karma is to just say “AI bad” and watch the upvotes flood in
While acknowledging the various ethical issues of LLMs and other such things:
A lot of "anti-ai" people on Reddit especially are just virtue signallers who want acceptable targets to bully while feeling morally superior.
It emulates human contact and can become an easy way out for any mental task.
Thats because the people addicted to it use/used something like charcterAI or the other services that do exactly the same. People dont think"i really should ask chat gbt another math question". they think "i really should chat with that character again" when they're addicted. I hope that helps
I only use AI for sexting, so far I don't consider it an addiction

Couldn't be me. I've tried to use ai over a dozen times for a variety of thing and it backfired each and every time or was straight up useless. Can't imagine wanting to actively use it for anything with the current error rate on most llm's; It's like being addicted to shooting yourself in the foot
code your own therapist app and get a therapist to use it
That doesn't sound healthy
Purposely handicapping yourself by not using one of the greatest tools to come out of the recent decade out of morals alone is insane.
The fact that it's useful and the fact that it enables some fucked up shit can exist at the same time, and can also both be factors for if you do/don't use it, or at least in what capacity
