Exactly man, one of my fav games this year was blue prince, I knew it wasn't winning shit when the 2 categories it was in had Clair obscure in both of them
Highkey I'm pissed at how Dispatch got treated because it was too late for bigger votes or nominations, and I'm confident it's gonna be left out of awards in 2026.
i mean, by the same logic the entire silksong crowd would have to shut up as well. Not saying its bad logic, it's just the issue that no one really knows what indie means anymore
If something has millions of dollars in budget, is published by a big company, and has hundreds working on it its not indie, this description doesn't match skong but it sure matches expedition 33.
Yes we are, indie games are not defined by the budget but how the game is funded and if any part of the persons bringing the money have a word on the production of the game
They could literally withdraw from some. Megabonk withdrew from best debut indie game, I think E33 should've have done the same in both indie categories
to be fair E33's soundtrack IS better. It's insane. I think Silksong should have taken indie though, because it should have. At least it got Action Adventure.
I mean, if we’re going by the technical definition (independent studio, no publisher) then yes, it is an indie game.
But in spirit, I agree, it’s not an indie game. More of a AA.
EDIT: nvm I’m an idiot E33 was published by Kepler.
But as someone else pointed out, Balatro won this same award last year and was published by Playstack, so whatever definition TGA is working with for “indie” is completely arbitrary anyway.
I can almost guarantee they've had a huge sales spike (20% off on Steam, btw) and they'll probably be doing good number for the rest of next year on this.
That what I thought when they started gaining this many awards "ohh man they will receive so much shit after this the aftermath is going to be terrible" and unfortunately it's revealed to be true 😔
I may or may not have been spoiled on the majority of the story a few years ago bc my friends went crazy over it and I thought I wouldn't play it because it's not my thing, but after I witnessed the monolith of gender envy that is that dumb bee...
It's honestly funny because you get years like this where so many games were fucking amazing and then you have last year where the best game is like an 8/10 lmao. I like Wukong and Astro Bot, but if you put them in like 2023 or this year, they're fighting just to be nominated. Like, I don't know what game I'd choose Astro Bot over the nominees this year.
It's my favorite cycle every year, we spent 11 months saying we don't care about the game awards, then spend the next week after it crashing out over the game awards
Are we really surprised a big chinese multiplayer game is winning the fan vote category? Not trying to be facetious here, but I'd expect there is a very large market of non-core gamers who don't give a rat's ass for anything non-gacha.
It didn’t win last year so it’s a bit surprising that it did this year over e33 nonetheless. And they’re competing with Genshin who arguably has the bigger Chinese playerbase
Me and some people were watching the game awards, when the guy from astrobot came out we were trying to figure out his accent, I told them it was a french accent to foreshadow the fact that Clair Obscur would win, and I guess I was right
Him being French is unrelated to Expedition 33 winning. He directed astrobot which won last year. They invite the previous year's winner to present the GotY award.
The Game Awards has always been absolutely dogshit at recognizing indie games.
It also doesn't help that "indie" is such a board term that effectively means "not AAA" nowadays
Being fair the AAA industry is so bloated that only smaller companies make AA titles anymore. One of the only big studios/ publishers that does AA consistently is nintendo. And with how dev tools have evolved this past decade indie and AA are almost on the same playing field. The team behind E33 could not have made it as it is a decade ago.
If you read it again i said nintendo makes AA games alongside their AAA titles, not that theyre a AA company. Nintendo has a huge library of smaller budget, easier to develop games they release inbetween their huge titles.
As much as i think that E33 winning all those awards was unfair and snubbed tons of other great games... holy fucking shit, wtf is that even supposed to mean? How the hell would Israel even benefit from this?
“Award bait” is when certain voting bodies have clear aesthetic and content preferences so a studio will make something creatively safe that leans into those preferences. See: Crash in 2004. It's implying (NOT MY WORDS) that Expedition 33 is a generic, bland, soulless, award-bait "Geoffslop", hence attributing its perceived artificiality and inherent "overrated-ness" to being "Spiritually Israeli" in nature
Sweet Jesus i know the word has been appropriated by bad actors who want to deflect all criticism of Israel but damn that's just textbook "my cereal is soggy so it must have been da joos" anti-semitism.
Yeah the RPG dimension feels way more in depth in Kingdom Come which also really went all in on the historical and environmental immersion. Feels like a true living world existing outside of the player's choices and influence.
off topic but what is electro even doing in this scene like bro is just standing there and then when spidey's already on the floor he hits him with the biggest attack they have cmon dawg lock in
Remember when the Youtuber Shade made a tweet saying E33 doesn't deserve to win the Game Awards and everyone made fun of him for it, saying he was being childish?
I'm not defending him or anything(I didn't even know who he was untill people here brought it up), but it is really funny how quickly people turned around on that.
it's not because they won the game of the year award, it's because they won like 80% of the awards even the ones that are pretty undeserving and other games did better, so a lot of fanbases right now felt like they just got robbed
By everyone, you mean a fraction of people who were just loud about it. The same people making fun of him are likely the same people who think it did deserve 9 awards.
Massive publisher backing it. Millions of dollars. Hundreds of people working on it
Seems about right.
I KNOW that they say its 30 people but that was disproven long ago they just keep outsourcing work to other studios so its not TECHNICALLY more people its just outsourcing
Like compare that to Team Cherry whos like 3 people.
Compare that to Adhoc, who are 30 people not including voice actors
This is like if FNAF 1 had to compete with like Assassin's Creed Unity
You would enjoy listening to this video essayist on the subject. https://youtu.be/67V-GSaceFQ she basically dissects the entire way we think about and label things as "indie" and how larger corporations are learning to manipulate that perception to out compete actually indie games for their niche in the market.
It gets worse when there's another developer that requested to be left out of indie debut game because they don't consider themselves as a debut game because they main people behind worked in different games before.
Silksong crashing out several platforms the day it released will always be iconic to me. Like GOTY is cool and all (and I did like E33!) but crashing Steam is a helluva thing to be able to brag about.
There's an issue in that if something is likely to win GotY, it inherently much more likely to win a million other awards as well, just by nature of "It's hard to be the best game without being at least pretty good at other categories". They don't go through and say "Well, this is already winning a lot of categories, so we'll give this one to someone else!".
I haven't personally played e33 either, but from what I've seen most people really would have been fine with any of its individual wins (outside the indie stuff where there's the debate on whether it should have qualified), maybe everyone's top pick but at least go "Eh, sure, I can see it". It's just an issue of the fact that it ended up getting so many of those people got mad.
Part of the issue is that they absolutely blaze through all the genre-specific awards and dwell on the stuff like best soundtrack, which emphasizes it even harder. Other games won awards last night, but mostly not in categories that got speeches.
Yeah, they should space the awards in a way where they try to at least give each game that wins something a speech (maybe not every game will get it but, you know, at least try). So we don't get like 4 speeches for one game and then none for another.
Especially because it doesn't really feel like there is a reason for which category gets a speech and which is just mentioned on the side
There's also the element that people act like losing an award is the same as the judges hating that game when in reality even losing an award means you still earned the title of "top five/six out of everything in that category".
It was obvious, the whole "indie" marketing of the game for months and praising despite the amount of money invested and the number of people who actually worked on it and not the "33 people" bullshit.
Why people put so much merit behind the results of the Game Awards is something I will never understand. It's just some random event one dude put together to host a jerk fest for unnamed journalists all funded by big publishers to advertise their products. The Academy Awards has more credibility than this nonsense.
Once you meet a guy who claims their favorite movie is whatever wins the oscars, you'll never want to stop fighting the urge to [removed by reddit] when thing you like loses.
Seems like it's less people salty their game didn't win and more people being salty one game won most of the awards, even ones it didn't really deserve (CO33 is not a fucking indie debut lmao, people with over a decade of experience in the industry worked on this)

The extra ammo is nice though. One more entry in the lists if reasons, you know?
Ironically, the awards may have been bad for the game's reputation.
They pissed off every other games community. Not because of the normal win but for taking almost every fucking category
Because they got put in fucking everything. Ffs Dispatch got no nominations in voice acting because CLAIR OBSCUR HAD 3 FUCKING VA NOMINATIONS
Exactly man, one of my fav games this year was blue prince, I knew it wasn't winning shit when the 2 categories it was in had Clair obscure in both of them
Blue Prince mention 👑

yeah that was fucking bullshit
I believe the Dispatch got released way too late for people to vote.
And i also believe that Games like KCD didn't got that far away in non-european medium.
Highkey I'm pissed at how Dispatch got treated because it was too late for bigger votes or nominations, and I'm confident it's gonna be left out of awards in 2026.
Like it’s their own fault and not the award’s fault. People really need to use more than 2 braincells
At least with indie categories they could have done the same as Megabonk devs
Yeah are we really saying the game with a 10 million dollar budget is “indie”?
There are games with a quarter of that budget that are AA games so it being called an indie is really dumb
Depends if you consider Hades 2 indie, considering that they had similar budgets
Hades II is from a way bigger studio, basically AA
i mean, by the same logic the entire silksong crowd would have to shut up as well. Not saying its bad logic, it's just the issue that no one really knows what indie means anymore
If something has millions of dollars in budget, is published by a big company, and has hundreds working on it its not indie, this description doesn't match skong but it sure matches expedition 33.
10 million dollars budget with a studio of 100+ working on it, “Indie Game of the Year”
Yes we are, indie games are not defined by the budget but how the game is funded and if any part of the persons bringing the money have a word on the production of the game
They could literally withdraw from some. Megabonk withdrew from best debut indie game, I think E33 should've have done the same in both indie categories
Megabonk withdrew because it literally wasn't a debut title.
to be fair, there were the exact same 5-6 games nominated for every single category
The things is that every had their ups and downs in each category
to be fair E33's soundtrack IS better. It's insane. I think Silksong should have taken indie though, because it should have. At least it got Action Adventure.
well we only had 5-6 good games this year. survey says all of them were e33
Then blame the Awards lmao
Game communitys being rational. Hell no. Plus E33 fans are really annoying about it
The game is good but I dont understand how one can look at it and say "yes this is what will set the record for most wins of any game ever."
They somehow won Best Independent Game & Best Debut Indie Game when the game is not, by any definition, an Indie game.
E33 has a publisher
They had a publisher, outside funding, and development outsourced to Korea
I doubt it, people lose their minds over awards each year, I doubt this will have a significant impact either way
I can almost guarantee they've had a huge sales spike (20% off on Steam, btw) and they'll probably be doing good number for the rest of next year on this.
That what I thought when they started gaining this many awards "ohh man they will receive so much shit after this the aftermath is going to be terrible" and unfortunately it's revealed to be true 😔
It was TGA's fault for putting it in so many categories. Shouldn't have been in best indie and got like... 3 VA nominations?
TBF the VA were really good
Ngl the best VA category overall was odd, like you could reasonably have put uma, ds2, dispatch and a handful of others in there
Dark Souls 2 so good it got nominated for an award years after it released
It took a few years to develop the skills for it.
DS2? I am dumb I don't know what that is supposed to be.
My dumbass thought it was dark souls 2

To be honest, all the games on there deserve to be game of the year, there so much good shit for gaming this year
Beautiful year for gaming, truly phenomenal. Tough lineup.
If any of the other games released last year they would have been a guaranteed GOTY.
They should have a kind of runner up just so it can placate the fans a bit to know their game was this close
But what about the fans who want to know how close their game got to being that close to winning? Hmm…We should make a runner-up for runner-up!
Well, yeah, that's how a place system works
It's honestly funny because you get years like this where so many games were fucking amazing and then you have last year where the best game is like an 8/10 lmao. Yeah, it's a good time to learn to be happy for others lol. Everyone got something this year.
WoW is popping off with huge updates and reworks.
BF6 is amazing (yet flawed!) and a huge improvement from previous titles.
Silksong exists!
The French exist?
HL3 is real!

WuWa players rn
either that or spinning away at the croupier
Look say what you will about players choice it might be for the best e33 didnt get ANOTHER win so i think wuwa can live on that basis.
I assure you, noone on the WuWa front expected that win either, equal opportunity blindsiding for everyone that isnt the TGA staff.
Are we really surprised a big chinese multiplayer game is winning the fan vote category? Not trying to be facetious here, but I'd expect there is a very large market of non-core gamers who don't give a rat's ass for anything non-gacha.

They’re getting a bit of shade from Dispatch tho lol
"a bit"
Every Dispatch subreddit I'm in is having a complete meltdown over it
Thanks them for not giving E33 tenth win
I'm not mad about anything winning anything. I just wanted it to be over so half life 3 wouldn't be announced.
Listen, I expected nothing and came back with Ace Combat 8 and Total War 40k I’m happy
The Total War 40k announcement gave me an erection
I’m gonna hope for a Tau DLC so much

Ace Combat 8 buddy
Where’s Titanfall 3, Game Awards?
idk but instead we got hyper-realistic Paladins with a bunch of other random combat bullshit 🤷♂️
I heard someone in the audienrce yells out when the host mentioned Titanfall.
They really want a Titanfall 3.
Also having a free to play hero shooter as the closing act is rather lame, even if it comes from a distinguished developer.
It's just sad to see fan-favorite games go ignored...
And where's Half Life 3 too!?
Lung... Ga, we tried hard to summon the Freeman, but we failed, Galunga !
Watching the YouTube chat get bent over the Forest 3 trailer was so funny
Asking the real questions here.

But muh propaganda
I know you say "Every fandom" but what fandoms are you referring too specifically?

The Game Awards has always been absolutely dogshit at recognizing indie games.

“Award bait” is when certain voting bodies have clear aesthetic and content preferences so a studio will make something creatively safe that leans into those preferences. See: Crash in 2004. Yeah the RPG dimension feels way more in depth in Kingdom Come which also really went all in on the historical and environmental immersion. Feels like a true living world existing outside of the player's choices and influence.
For real
off topic but what is electro even doing in this scene like bro is just standing there and then when spidey's already on the floor he hits him with the biggest attack they have cmon dawg lock in
Remember when the Youtuber Shade made a tweet saying E33 doesn't deserve to win the Game Awards and everyone made fun of him for it, saying he was being childish?
I'm not defending him or anything(I didn't even know who he was untill people here brought it up), but it is really funny how quickly people turned around on that.
it's not because they won the game of the year award, it's because they won like 80% of the awards even the ones that are pretty undeserving and other games did better, so a lot of fanbases right now felt like they just got robbed
By everyone, you mean a fraction of people who were just loud about it. The same people making fun of him are likely the same people who think it did deserve 9 awards.
Honest opinion? It's a really really good game, definitely deserved to win a bunch of awards. But the hype is just too much.
I mean, how can you justify a AA game winning indie awards over an independent studio composed of 3 people?
E33 far and away deserved best soundtrack, writing, and art direction. But the hype gets to a point where I just can't be assed to care anymore.
I disagree with the art direction, there was Hades II with mostly hand drawn assets and silksong which is fully hand drawn

How it feels not having played any of these games and therefore having no emotional investment whatsoever.
"Indie game"
Massive publisher backing it. Millions of dollars. Hundreds of people working on it
Seems about right.
I KNOW that they say its 30 people but that was disproven long ago they just keep outsourcing work to other studios so its not TECHNICALLY more people its just outsourcing
Like compare that to Team Cherry whos like 3 people.
Compare that to Adhoc, who are 30 people not including voice actors
This is like if FNAF 1 had to compete with like Assassin's Creed Unity
Thats just a wild difference in scale
And, of course: Best debut indie backed that costed «only» 10 million.
Yeah like
I hate to sound like an old woman but like
Back in my day they didn't have 10 million dollar budgets, we got 2 games in 3 months from one guy and the gender of the robot fox was a mystery
Correction: because the dev already did and publish another game under a different name, not because "worked in different games before"
E33 deserves all it's flowers and praises, and i'm glad it was the one to win GOTY
But silksong getting only ONE award after the generational run it had this year was total bullshit and no one will convince me otherwise
Silksong crashing out several platforms the day it released will always be iconic to me. Like GOTY is cool and all (and I did like E33!) but crashing Steam is a helluva thing to be able to brag about.
It will never not be funny to me how many people just dont understand the game awards
The second E33 came out, I knew it was going to win this year. I've been calling it for months.
It’s gonna be the same with GTA 6. As long as it’s not a steaming pile of dogshit it’ll sweep up a lot of awards ad well.
Nah. Red Dead 2 was amazing and it didn't win GOTY. Astrobot won GOTY while being a console exclusive silly platformer about the console's mascot.
It was obvious, the whole "indie" marketing of the game for months and praising despite the amount of money invested and the number of people who actually worked on it and not the "33 people" bullshit.
Everyone expected it to win. They just didn’t expect it to win basically every category.
If you had people calling movies "oscar-bait" you most definitely will start hearing people calling games "TGA-bait" next year.
E33 is one of my favorite games I've ever played
With that said.
It winning best RPG over KCD2 is bullshit.
It winning best indie is bullshit.
As much as I love the art in the game it should have gone to silksong man come on.
This should be the top comment. No BS, just exactly what most of us are thinking.
When you got both Sonic and Mario fans agreeing, you know that you have done something
Agree on what?
Sonic only has one category, and E33 is not in there
"how can I make this about Sonic"
How does this affect Sonic's legacy?
Suffering from success
imo these events would be a lot more fun and less vitriolic if each category besides GOTY could have 3 games win for it instead of just one.
"And the awards for best voice acting go to... E33, E33, and E33!"
E33 triple winning voice actor would result in so much hatred lol
Why are people blaming the game instead of the Game Awards who gave out the awards?
They fell victim to the hype
Why people put so much merit behind the results of the Game Awards is something I will never understand. It's just some random event one dude put together to host a jerk fest for unnamed journalists all funded by big publishers to advertise their products. The Academy Awards has more credibility than this nonsense.
Once you meet a guy who claims their favorite movie is whatever wins the oscars, you'll never want to stop fighting the urge to [removed by reddit] when thing you like loses.
TGA is literally a marketing event first and foremost.
The awards mean fuck all, especially when everyone forgets a week later.
It's not the game's fault that the award ceremony lavished it with prizes
Dont understand why people care so much about this. Good games will be recognized either way.
What? The game awards bringing out toxic fans who cant handle their game not winning?
This has never happened before.
Seems like it's less people salty their game didn't win and more people being salty one game won most of the awards, even ones it didn't really deserve (CO33 is not a fucking indie debut lmao, people with over a decade of experience in the industry worked on this)
I haven't played or even like Silksong but how the fuck did E33 win the indie award over it? Makes zero sense. Silksong was made by like 3 dudes.
People are mad that E33 is winning in categories it shouldn't even have been nominated into. E33 is barely even an rpg so how did it win over kcd2?
Well you see, the game awards jury consistently ignores 2D games, and since the decision is 90% the jury... Wellllll
Stray : first time ?
