Bought a new Christmas tree stand yesterday. The stands were not boxed, they were sitting on top of each other with each stand having a bag attached for the hardware pieces. Got home and this was just sitting at the bottom of it. I checked the instructions and this piece is not listed anywhere as an item it comes with, but it's the same color as the stand. It's 3 1/2" long. I went back to the store later in the day to buy some other items and checked the other stands and none of them contained this piece. I even watched the how to set up the stand video and this piece wasn't part of it. A reverse image search doesn't bring up anything that looks similar.
The stand itself is a "Noma Christmas Tree Stand, For Trees up to 9-ft". https://media-www.canadiantire.ca/product/seasonal-gardening/seasonal/christmas-trees/1519244/tree-7-maine-97-noma-53159693-377b-4dbe-9bec-82dbe762053a-jpgrendition.jpg?imdensity=1&imwidth=1244&impolicy=mZoom

Looks a lot like the adjustment lever from an office chair - the one pushed to raise/lower the chair height maybe.
Flip out foot from a blow up decoration fan base.
99% sure this is a locking lever for some kind of extending pole (mop, duster, etc.) I know I've seen this before, because I would always fiddle with it. I just can't place what thing it was actually on.
I FOUND IT! It's the locking lever for an extendable rake

Maybe if you provide a picture of the stand as well, someone might recognize it and in turn be able to tell you what that part is for.
Sorry for my ignorance, first time posting in this section! Never attempted to edit a post or add a photo after being posted before so I'm struggling with it, but the stand itself is a "Noma Christmas Tree Stand, For Trees up to 9-ft". If you look in the center inside base there's a place for a screw, there's 4 of them on each corner but this hardware kit only came with two screws which are used to screw into the base of the tree to help keep it straight. I've tried looking at that piece and it's so far back that it would have no affect on a tree base. Especially since there's only 1 of these pieces that was randomly in the stand. Edit - it allows me to add a photo but it doesn't save when I post :(
Try posting just the photo,in reply to the commenter, with no text.
If that fails you can upload the image to a hosting site like imgur and post/edit in the url in a comment.

Yeah, I feel that piece is definitely something that fell into the package. Either at the shipping warehouse or at the manufacturer depending on whether it was within the same internal wrapping.
Looks like some sort of trigger mechanism with a pivot point to allow pressure when pressing. I'm probably completely wrong
Does the stand have a brand name?
Brand name = Noma
I added an updated my post to include a link to the direct image.
Is it the release/tension lever for a tree stand base?
Don't think so. The tree is held up by a plate that's screwed into the bottom of the tree and then inserted into the stand for additional support, and by 4 metal screws that are used to brace it in its position
The center hole looks very similar to the mixing paddle in my breadmaker.
Does the "tongue end" fit neatly in the eye bolts? I think its a tool to give you a little extra leverage when you tighten the eye bolts into the tree
It would easily fit but probably snap within a few turns.
As others have said, it looks like a broken extension pole lock.
I think it's an anti-splash pouring spout. You place it so that adding water hits the cup and is directed into the reservoir without splashing. Obviously something you practice with.
