My partner found this at an Op Shop. Reverse imaging isn't doing us any good. We are thinking maybe a home made desk organizer/pen holder.

  • Looks like a decorative pencil holder for a desk, possibly homemade.

Yeah, thats look like a school project.

  • The flowers are Tole painting, a style that was really popular in the 1990’s. There was a whole industry thinking up little items people could paint.

My guess is this is a paint brush holder. You would use paint brushes of several different sizes.

This wouldn’t be very useful as a paintbrush holder. You can’t clean it easily and it would squish the tips.

My guess is a pen holder

Edit: I’m now seeing water stains on the bottom so I guess maybe…just not very practical

You put the paintbrushes in brush side up...

Then the paint would drip down the handle…as an artist…I would detest this design

At least with Tole painting, there shouldn’t be enough paint on them for that to happen, but regardless, most of the time, the storage is for when you’re not using them, so paint should be cleaned off before putting them away.

It's not ideal for brushes. Water/paint can drip into the ferrule and dry there, making the bristles loose or messy over time.

But most things are done badly, which is usually better than them not being done at all. A bad brush stand is better than no brush stand.

thanks for coming to my product development seminar

I think the idea is, you keep your clean paintbrushes in it.

As I recall the projects were often more about aesthetics than utility.

  • Definitely a homemade pencil holder. Painted woodwork like this was a popular craft market item in the 1990s.

Here is Donna Dewberry demonstrating the One Stroke painting technique for pansies. She obviously didn't invent the style which had been popular in folk art around the globe, but the wiggle stroke on the flower and leaves made me think Donna Dewberry. Her technique books and classes and supplies were massively marketed in the 1990s. You could walk into a craft store and find books or classes on how to do it and even see demonstrations on TV (at least in the US).

I loved watching Donna Dewberry on my local PBS "Create" channel! It is so fun to watch the flowers effortlessly appear before my eyes! I like to paint, but I could never quite get that specific style to work in the way hers does.

She really did make it look so effortless! I was always disappointed I couldn’t ever get her style to work for me either but my grandmother could do it no problem.

That’s the name I was searching for - Donna Dewberry. I bet this is right out of one of her books.

  • Pen holder and the purple color is ink?

  • Makeup brush holder would be my guess but brush holder in general is most likely the answer

    Yeah, or eyeliner pencil holder.

  • A holder for whatever pens, pencils, or brushes you use in your office, bathroom, kitchen.

  • Paint brush holder - that's why it's tiered. They go in there when they're clean, to make it easier to see which brush you need while you're working. Then after you use them, you clean them and let them dry and then put them back in.

  • Pen/pencil holder for a desk or counter top.

  • Pen/pencil holder. We have one in our kitchen, either my hubby or his brother made it in shop class. We also put scissors in it.

  • It might be used to hold incense sticks, maybe.

  • Pen or pencil holder. I’ve also seen these used to hold things like cannabis vape carts and such. Leaning toward pen/pencil stand for a desk though.

  • Incense holder !

  • Hope you bought it, it's cute.

I wish I had a house big enough to collect every dust collector I want from opshops 😂

  • Pen/pencil holder.

Wild that the holes are noted just larger than a pencil. 😂

Purple in the hole likely iridescent dried ink down there.

  • decorative pen holder

  • I was thinking a cheese knife holder. I could be wrong tho.

  • Paintbrush holder

  • Might also be a crochet hook holder- which I might have to make now.

  • This would be a perfect crochet hook holder!

  • Looks like a makeup brush holder. This one might be handmade rather than commercially produced. They were popular in the 1950s and earlier iirc

  • It looks like the bud vase holder my grandma had back in the 90's. a little test tube sized bud vase went in the holes and she would cut flowers, usually roses, from her garden to display.
