Is this from my drying machine? The text seems quite strange to me. It’s light and somewhat flexible. Any ideas? Avocado for scale, a small one at that.
Avocado farmer here. That’s a 4046 PLU on that avocado, indicating it’s a non-organic small to medium avocado of about 3-5 ounces. Or a size 60 in industry parlance. Definitely small but not tiny. Your more common avocado that you’re probably used to is a 4225 PLU that’s 7.5-9.5 ounces (aka a size 48.)
You don’t see many of these smalls in the store for two interrelated reasons. First, the price per pound paid to farmers is significantly lower for 60’s than for 48’s (often 50% or less.) Second, these weigh less and so it’s less pound per piece. So if this fruit had been left on the tree to grow into a 48 the farmer would get about 4x the money for it. The picking and other costs would basically be the same. So try is either a farmer in a weird position having to pick their fruit when it’s too small or this was a small part of a harvest that was mostly much bigger fruit (they don’t typically leave fruit behind when picking an orchard, they get it all in one go.)
The small ones are my favorite. I have half with my breakfast and I also have the perfect size container for the other half to chill in the fridge until the next day.
Man i get 4046 at my store and they're definitely bigger than this one.about the size of a large apple or huge pear..im gonna scale it next time. With or without the seed for the 3-5 oz weight?
The small ones like this usually are sold in bags here and i have never gotten a ripe one yet so i dont buy them much
They will eventually ripen. If they’re too immature to have been picked and you try to ripen them they will turn to watery mush. But they have very strict controls in place to prevent that from reaching consumers.
I buy green ones that have a stem. I leave them on the counter just until they are changing to the brown and throw them in the fridge and they hold that fresh peak for around a week
When I buy avocados I usually pick slightly unripe ones and bring them home. When I take them out of the bag they are soft and mushy brown and throw them right in the trash. Store bought avos are the absolute worst fruit on the planet.
I've only ever seen 4046 in my local stores and I also worked in the grocery store for like 8 years so I always look at the stickers. You're telling me people get bigger avocados like.. commonly? I'm so upset. I literally know avocados as "4046" in my brain. I want 4225 now 😭
I’m so used to using bananas to get cash back at stores (because I loathe being charged ~$10 in ATM fees for pulling out my OWN MONEY 🤦🏻♂️🤬) so the ‘4011’ SKU for bananas is ingrained in my memory forever now lmao, but hey getting cash back for only 15-25¢ (usually about that for a single small banana) AND I get a small healthy snack? Works for me lol 😂👌🏻
It’s probably inflation perception issues. A 4046 should be MUCH cheaper per piece than a 4225. So if the store liked to have displays that say things like $1 per avocado, they’d have to switch to make that viable unless it was a loss leader.
Gorgeous but not commercially viable at scale. Because grocers have to make space for those separately and if they're going to do that they want a steady supply of them, which you're not going to find. The places with the growing conditions to get them that big or farmers willing to wait that long for them are pretty rare. Which is why you'll only really find them at farmer's markets and farm stands, etc.
I know that number. That's the size I bought at WinCo. Another item that's increased by nearly 40% by the time I stopped buying them. Perfect size in my opinion.
I'm a fan of the 4770s. $1.49 for a 4046 or $1.99 for a 4770. 4046's have slowed down in my department over the past 6 months or so as the prices have nearly evened out.
If a retailer sells by the piece and commonly mixes 4225 and 4046 avocados on the shelf then, if going only by size, the consumer should always pick the 4225?
Yes but you won't find what you describe commonly happening. They'll set up either 4225 or 4046 to be the PLU with the price per piece item. Or more likely they'll create two prices (e.g. 4046 for $1 each and 4225 at 3 for $5) and keep them separated.
We drive through Gilroy, CA every year for a conference my wife has to attend. On our way through we stop at every farm stand we come across. They typically have very small avocados at around 20 for $2 or so. You normally have to buy something else to get that deal, but we also stock up on fresh garlic on the way through. Best deal we ever got was 50 small avocados for $1. Generally we get over 100 avocados under $10.
By small avocados, generally 3 or so have the same amount of flesh as a regular sized one.
It’s a company called Charles Tyrwhitt. As previous comments have mentioned they are incredible shirts for business and formal use. They travel really well and don’t wrinkle when packaged. The collars also sit really nicely if you don’t wear a tie and have a couple of buttons undone
This is a new brand for me, thank you. I’ve been getting a little tired with Banana Republic’s selection and felt I lived between a medium and large with them. Hope to find a good fit with these folks, especially with all the size options.
This is so infuriating. I was just trying to buy a collar stay because I hadn’t worn a collared shirt in ages and lost the set it came with. I went to 3-4 stores and nothing. Couldn’t even describe it.
Collar stay. I know because my brother used to wear dress shirts a lot and if he decided not to dry clean some, he’d throw them in our machines at home. Dryer stopped working one day, I called the repairman out. He laughed, told me he found the problem, and presented a handful to me. He didn’t charge me anything because he lived nearby and didn’t have to fix anything. Lovely guy. Dryer still works without issue four years later.

Finally - an unknown object I can identify! When I was a broke young man, I only had one dress shirt that had these. The others either didn’t come with them or they got lost. I would transfer the same pair from one shirt to another for years and years. They were all bent out of shape and damaged, so my collars always looked out of whack.
Looks like a magnetic collar stay. You put it in the collar of a shirt and attach a small magnet to the back to keep your collar straight. It’s just missing the magnet (it’s a small disk about the size of the width of the collar stay and about 1/4” (3-4cm) thick.
The item in question looks similar to a Trig. Blocklayers/Bricklayer use them to wrap a line to it and then put it in a mortar joint, or weight it down on a secured block and lay the new fresh block or brick to the line so they are unifirm. No? Okay. Gouniform.
edit: sees shirt thingamajig for the collar thingamabobber
It's a collar stay. They go into the collars of (usually men's) dress shirts, but good shirts have removable ones like this so that the shirt can be pressed without the collar stay leaving an imprint, or ironed without a plastic one melting.
Can’t remember the name but they get inserted under your collar top to keep it looking square and crisp and not wrinkled and curled up. I got a giant box of plastic ones in my drawer in case I lose one
Honestly it looks like the metal things that go in a men's dress shirt collar. I have some that have metal and some that are plastic. Not sure if you have mens dress shirts but cold be it
The metal thing is a collar stay. On some dress shirts, under the collar you will see a stitched pocket to slide the collar stay in. It helps to keep the collar looking straight and crisp
A collar stay. It makes your collar stay flat. There is a little slot for them in nicer shirts. If youre hard up for them, you can use grocery store club cards cut into the same shape.
So one mystery is solved. But the bigger question is who does that collar stay belong to if it's not the OP's? Is your partner having special guests over when you're not home?
It's a collar stay from Charles Tyrwhitt shirts. They have ready-made and custom shirts, and I just got my first custom shirt from them TODAY! They're great!

That might be the world's smallest avocado.
Avocado farmer here. That’s a 4046 PLU on that avocado, indicating it’s a non-organic small to medium avocado of about 3-5 ounces. Or a size 60 in industry parlance. Definitely small but not tiny. Mine too, half of one is a great serving size. Aldi has them for 59 cents.
Was going to ask about the small avo but halving it and perfect size container is just even funnier
This is why I love reddit.
Fr. The main reason I downloaded reddit was cause how knowledgeable people can be.
I now know more info about avocados than I will likely use, while knowing what a collar stay is.
Dropping some knowledge bombs! Fascinating and TY!

I like your username. But, if you ever want to change, might I suggest "Avocadoadvocate"? Cheers!
I buy green ones that have a stem. I leave them on the counter just until they are changing to the brown and throw them in the fridge and they hold that fresh peak for around a week
(Humorist) Dave Barry says avocados are ripe only for about an hour before beginning to spoil, and that hour usually occurs around midnight.
When I buy avocados I usually pick slightly unripe ones and bring them home. When I take them out of the bag they are soft and mushy brown and throw them right in the trash. Store bought avos are the absolute worst fruit on the planet.
I’ve never seen them with a stem attached!
Same. 4046 is definitely larger than this. This one looks 1/4 of the size.
I've only ever seen 4046 in my local stores and I also worked in the grocery store for like 8 years so I always look at the stickers. You're telling me people get bigger avocados like.. commonly? I'm so upset. I literally know avocados as "4046" in my brain. I want 4225 now 😭

THAT'S WHY they changed avocado codes at my store! They switched to stocking smaller avocados! We used 4225 until about a year ago? Year and a half?
It’s probably inflation perception issues. A 4046 should be MUCH cheaper per piece than a 4225. So if the store liked to have displays that say things like $1 per avocado, they’d have to switch to make that viable unless it was a loss leader.
Yeah, that sounds about right. They do sometimes do $1 per.

Makes sense. This is at a little market on Oahu. Kahuku Farms.
Looks like the ones here in Panama. Size of softballs.
This comment is truly fascinating thank you
its wild we share plu's, we only carry the 4046 at my store but they aren't terribly small
I know that number. That's the size I bought at WinCo. Another item that's increased by nearly 40% by the time I stopped buying them. Perfect size in my opinion.

I assume the ounces above are ounces by weight, not volume?
I recently visited the island nation of Antigua. Most produce is grown locally due to necessity. There avocados are the size of coconuts. Amazing.
Man, you learn something new every day on reddit. Just punched in the old 4225 ar the store yesterday!
Here in Michigan, we’re even more used to the 4770 XLs.
Came here for the collar stays, staying for the PLUs
It’s actually quite small. The collar stay is for this shirt:

Oops! All Collars
You could hang glide with that collar
Weaponised shirt.
That's all I've been able to focus on. I don't even know what the question was.
I’m holding the collar stay about 6 inches off the counter in the last pic, bit of an illusion I think… but it’s definitely a small one haha
If you knew the item was a collar stay why you make this post? Im high and confused
Someone solved it in the thread keep scrolling
OP is just replying to different comments after
Yeah, you're just showing off that you have a small avocado. We're all reallllly impressed.
I’ve never seen a smaller avocado personally
I’m gonna need to see a banana next to the avocado for scale
I bet it still cost a lot. These avocado barons are killing us.
We drive through Gilroy, CA every year for a conference my wife has to attend. On our way through we stop at every farm stand we come across. I need those. A whole Avacado is too much
I thought that said “A whale Avacado”
Yeah that'd definitely be too much.
AvacadWOAH
...or the world's largest collar stay
Its a dragon egg, OP just put the sticker there so we wouldn't be suspicious
That or OP has really small hands
That’s wild using something that comes in all sizes. For scale.
It’s a grower, not a shower.
I thought the question was about the avocado!!!
WHO ATE THE BANANA‽
You have a lot of nerve using an avocado for scale.
Yeah avocados come in all kinds of sizes, bananas are ideal because it is a standardized unit
I DIDNT HAVE A BANANA OKAY THE STICKER ON THE AVO IS “STANDARDIZED”
Everybody knows you need to use either a banana or Carlos.
Norris?
I like to live dangerously

Me too - now I’m retired, I’ve about 8 left

Yah, better than Brooks Brothers.
They’re expensive because their patterns are so complex.
Love those shirts. Been slowly replacing my wardrobe with them. Even the ones I bought 10 years ago are still in great shape
It’s a metal collar stay for Charles Tyrwhitt collared shirt I have many of these the most comfortable non iron shirts a bit pricey though
This is so infuriating. I was just trying to buy a collar stay because I hadn’t worn a collared shirt in ages and lost the set it came with. I went to 3-4 stores and nothing. Couldn’t even describe it.
Finally found a cleaners and they had a few.
I like the Wurkin stiffs brand - they are available on Amazon and have magnetic buttons if you choose to use them.
They’re the best for giving stiff structure to a less structured collar
Men's Warehouse had them in metal.
Unethical pro tip just steal them off shirts on the rack at department stores
Looks like a collar stay for a men's shirt.
It’s just non-magnetic collar stays for men’s dress shirts.
That’s a weird descriptor. Most are non magnetic.
From CHARLES TYRWHITT menswear shop.
I didn't know I needed embossed collar stays until today! 😇

I found an item like that but made of cheap plastic recently, I use it to clean under my nails sometimes.
The plastic ones are pretty flimsy, and that’s a genius use!
I def prefer the reusable ones, and I like the weight they add.
It's a collar stay for dress shirt collars. They keep the collar in good form.

It's a collar bone. You can keep it, it fell out of one your shirts.
Also, a shirt that has these should probably just be hanged to dry, or ironed dry if you wanna be extra crispy.
Or in prison, a shank for little people
I think they found my feline felons murder weapon
I have Thomas Pink ones as well as Charles Tyrwhitt. The Pinks are a nice heavy brass, the CT’s stamped metal.
These and TM Lewin are my favourite shirt makers.
I’ve always known them as collar bones !

But yeah, the other thing is a collar stay

I have the same shirts, it keeps the collar straight.
I wonder if maybe the metal is a tag for the machine. A serial "number", similar to the vin on a vehicle, except those are a much longer number.
Men shirt collar support piece, usually plastic, expensive shirts using metal, there should be 2, maybe the other one is on the shirt collar
It’s a collar stay, from https://www.charlestyrwhitt.com/us/homepage embossed on the stay. High end beautiful shirts and expensive.
It looks like a collar stay to make the collars of dress shirts lay flat. Should be one on each side and they are usually removable.
Its looks like its out of a shirt collar but do you have a banana to scale the avocado please then i will be able to say for sure.
they go into shirt lapels to keep them strait and pointy. usually get hard plastic ones but same shape prolly a nicer one

I just woke up and stupidly thought the OP thought the avocado was the metal object. I desperately need some coffee.
Is on of the prices that go in collar of a button down shirt. They keep the collar straight (not curling under).
That piece is used in nicer, button up shirts to keep the collar corners stiff and prevent them from curling.
Collar stay, from a dress shirt collar. Look underneath, you're missing one. I take mine out before laundry.
Serious answer it is a little “bone” thing that sticks in collars of men’s shirts to keep them stiff
It is a collar point. It fits into a slot along a men’s collar on a nice shirt to keep the edge clean.
That is a collar stay. It fits into a pocket on the back of a men's dress shirt collar to keep it stiff
I initially thought you're using the collar stay for scale while the avocado's the unknown object 🫣
Looks kind of like the thing that goes into the collar of a dress shirt to keep the collar point rigid
This is a collar stay for a man's collared shirt. It goes in the tip of the collar to keep it stiff.
That plastic piece is a collar stay to keep the ends from rolling up. The other is yes, an avocado.
The metal looks like a collar stay goes into the pointy part of a collar on nice button up shirts

The piece beside the avocado is a collar stay from a button-down shirt.
Anyone gonna tell him it’s a collar straightener for dress shirts?
It came out of the collar of a shirt, and it keeps the points sharp.
Metal collar stays are great, just hate when those stays dont stay.
Without a banana for scale, I don't even know what I'm looking at.
Can’t tell the size because it’s not compared to a banana
Avocado short sword. That way the Avocado can protect itself.
Goes in dress shirts. I know because I wore one years ago.
