I will be visiting Manhattan on the 31st, and I'd like to bring some really outstanding NYC bagels home for a new years day brunch. There are countless "best bagels" lists on here, but many of these places have hour long lines outside, or are only open mornings. Where could I grab a dozen to go late on a Wednesday afternoon?

Part of our leaving ritual is for my husband to get up early and grab us bagel sandwiches and a dozen to go.
And they have an express line for just bagel purchases
I like Zucker's but am not going to start a war by claiming they're objectively best. They allow you to order online. Then you can go there, cut past the line, and pick up the bag with your name on it.

P.S. Don't wait for the email telling you it's ready. Just wait a bit and go. When I've done that in the mornings, I've usually finished my breakfast before the email comes telling me my order is ready.

Second this and support the idea that there is neither a best bagel nor a best coffee in NYC. Zucker’s are good. Avoid tourist places like pop up bagels and Zabars.

Kossar's. Hit "The Pickle Guys" a couple of doors down from Grand St location too.
They do now have 4 other locations in the city

Seconding this . It’s in my top 3 bagel places. I stopped by Christmas Eve around 3pm to pick up a dozen and was in and out quick. Still had all bagel flavors available. Essa bagel on 51st /3rd also has a separate line if you just want to get bagels (no sandos or cream cheese) which is quick but idk if they’ll have all flavors late in the day.
Bagel Bob’s on University Pl just south of Union Sq is a personal favorite and there’s never a line. They close at 7pm
FYI they are cash only but you can also order for delivery through the apps
We order Bagel Bobs at my office and have a huge debate over them! Owner loves them and I still prefer Essa 🤷🏼♀️

just go to essabagel, go to the back where they have a separate line for just bagels and tubs of cream cheese
There is no best bagel so long as they are made fresh you’ll be fine. I like Kossar’s and Russ and Daughters but that’s because my parents took me there and their parents took them- tradition!!!

Well I was hoping to narrow it down, but Im staying in Chelsea and most of your suggestions are around there, so it looks like Ill be hitting Kossars, Ess-a-bagel or Zuckers, it will depend on traffic and fate I guess. Ill let people know who won, as if any of you will care :)
By the way, I used to work downtown and if I wasnt looking for a dozen, and it was morning not afternoon, the best bagel in NYC is a truck thats usually parked on Broadway between Duane & Reade and I will not be taking questions.
