The pathway to my door has rocky steps, and in the evenings there isn’t any lighting, which makes it hard to see. Even though I use the steps often and generally know my way, the other night I missed a step while walking down and fell quite hard, injuring my leg. Do I tell my landlord?

  • why not? just mention it, not his liability you missed the step. Maybe solar lights or something can be added.

Yes, those solar lights are pretty inexpensive. If he won't buy a couple may be worthwhile to throw down on them yourself

In the meantime use your phone light or carry a flashlight with you.

  • use your phone's flashlight when walking over the dark steps?

  • Yes tell them. Keep it simple and factual. No lighting, uneven steps, you fell and were injured. Even if nothing comes of it right away, it creates a record and flags a real safety issue.

  • Definitely mention it in a friendly non threatening way, kind of as a heads-up. Might even help if you include a couple of inexpensive ways to address the issue?

It's technically the homeowner's responsibility to ensure safety, to the point that the post office can refuse to deliver if it's unsafe, so I hope your landlord takes it well

  • Quite sure it’s a violation of the building code to not have an outdoor light. I’d ask the landlord to install one.

  • As a land lord myself. There needs to a light at the front door. To illuminate the address at least.

  • I’ve installed sensor lights which helps immensely. They’re fairly cheap, batteries last almost a year (and are replaceable!) and got reimbursed by my LL for putting them up for safety. I’d recommend doing something like that!

  • I'm actually surprised that comments in here aren't saying to go after the landlord for every dime they've got.

  • Call Morgan and Morgan and Sue them
