I remember a winter in the mid 00’s that had an ice storm. My bestie and I smoked a joint and went sledding at a park in upper Lonsdale. We watched a transformer blow up right in front of us due to the weight of the ice causing branches and whole trees to crumble. It was the best fireworks show. Some dude came out in his bathrobe to investigate and we had to yell at him to stand back because the tree was still falling apart.
I’m so sorry to hear that! For the future, if you get a battery pack with a bubbler, that’s usually enough to keep fish alive while the power is out. They tyoicallt die from lack of oxygen in the water when there are power outages. There are bubblers that work with usb.
I woke up around 1am because there was this deep growl that sounded like the big garbage bins being rolled out of our condo tower. When my sleepy brain realized they don’t take the garbage at 1am I realized it was the wind. It’s so wild out!! Now BC Hydros map is a hot red mess
You see power flashes too? Green flares? Im at Sunset Beachm needless to say, ive been up since 130am. There waves crashing against the beach look huge
I'm in mount pleasant too. I thought it was an earthquake. Woke up around 3:50am to my bed vibrating. Walls shaking. Seems to be calmer as of about 4:20 and I'm not smoking anything!
I slept very poorly on Monday night and decided to go to bed early last night.
Woke up at 2:45am and now i can't go back to sleep. The wind sounds incredible. I live on the 29th floor it's so loud...
Edit: i figured out why it's extra loud. The demolition project on top of pacific center (old four seasons) was a building wrapped in plastic. The plastic wrap has broken and it's now flapping in the wind.
I totally get that. There was a huge tree outside where I used to live. If I was still there, I’d be scared. I feel a lot of fear for my family rn who live in a heavily forested area. Maybe move out of harms way, just incase? :(
Heads up to anybody heading to work downtown: according to the BC Hydro map, there's a power outage around Granville and 41st, so if that intersection is a four-way stop, traffic is going to be a gong show.
Hello Lower mainland, I'm Mike Rotch and this is the ubc weather. It's currently pissing cats and dogs, banshee lvl winds with alot of debris everywhere, trees have opted out of being trees and are just falling over like narcoleptic goats, electricity has checked out in some spots, Donkey Kong was spotted throwing kegs around and I'm sure there's a hell of a mess to be cleaned up... Pretty much everywhere. Back to you OP.
Just got woken up from the wind as well. Heard a loud pop not too far away from me that sounded like a gunshot—definitely had to have been a tree or some branch falling onto something for sure.
Power’s out in Kerrisdale. Went out shortly after 4:00am. And in a place with 50+ year old insulation (or lack thereof) 🤞the candles generate enough heat. 🥶
I’m up getting ready to leave for a flight lol and watched my whole neighborhood in mount pleasant go dark. Sounded like my windows were going to just burst from the wind.
Same! I don’t think I’ve ever heard it this strong before. It’s kinda cozy being warm in bed while it’s cold & yucky out but also I just want to sleeeeep!
I love storms… bundled up and sat outside for awhile… but it got too dramatic and I kept envisioning getting taken out by a downed tree or flying branch. Caution prevailed.
it really did sound so haunted, the wind was creepy as hell. woke up around 330 from all the construction tarps in my neighbourhood, they were making the craziest moaning sounds!
I woke up several times with heart pounding. I saw some flashes as well. It was pretty loud out here in Coquitlam. Half of the time I was worried something was going to fly off the balcony.
Same.. I live on the top floor of an SFU apartment, and I was so afraid that anything would get damaged or the ceiling would leak. I couldn't sleep and got out of bed to check everything whenever I heard a loud noise. Yeah, eventually, my outdoor Christmas tree decor was blown down, and my lantern shattered...
Woke up around 3AM. Grabbing all the items off the balcony. Absolutely wild. Now everything is covered in dirt and grime and I’ve been cleaning all morning.
Just went for a drive to inspect the damage. Lots of trees/branches and other debris on the road in Burnaby right now. Wind is absolutely howling. Had to steer into it at points.
Welcome to the climate catastrophe early days. We will eventually be motivated to change our ways, but right now, Canada is accelerating fossil fuel output and may Canadians seems to applaud this as defending our sovereignty. Ok.
The wind closing my window woke me up (I like a little fresh air when I sleep) but now all I hear is the sirens at the port. They have been going off for at least 30 minutes- nonstop. I’m in Gastown.
The foundation of this new house just shook and it sounded like the windows were coming off the frames. This is a new, multimillion dollar house in kits I’m sleeping in - not a flimsy old one.
What?! New west is crazy. Ive been awake for 2 hours now. Living in an old building doesn't help lol. It seems to have gotten more calm than it was 30 minutes ago at least.. still preventing me from sleeping
I was already awake because I’m sick and I fell asleep at like 6pm, but the thunder still scared me lol. I’m listening to music loud as fuck in my headphones and I can still hear it
The wind is strong enough where I am that it's making the rain hitting my door sound like someone is out there tapping at it and the motion activated light keeps going on. Banging noises from bins etc. knocking over in the surrounding area.
There are gigantic trees right next to/hanging over home that always shed small sticks and branches with most wind. By the sounds of it, tonight they are BIG branches dropping right over my room and I’m honestly quite scared.
Environment Canada put out a special weather statement for the area. "A vigorous cold front will move across the BC interior this morning. In its wake, strong westerly wind gust will develop.....may lead to possible tree damages, outages, delays....winds will ease later this morning as the front tracks eastward."

We all up late tonight lol
I like this weird group of us, all not sleeping from the storm, chatting a bit anonymously
Lol. Found family in a wind storm.
‘A bit anonymously’ haha yes
Just had to call 911 for a fallen tree on a power line right beside my balcony, sounded like a bomb went off
I remember a winter in the mid 00’s that had an ice storm.
Our power went out during that storm and it was in the negatives inside our house for almost 24 hours - our fish died 🥲
I’m so sorry to hear that! For the future, if you get a battery pack with a bubbler, that’s usually enough to keep fish alive while the power is out. They tyoicallt die from lack of oxygen in the water when there are power outages. There are bubblers that work with usb.
Oof. Fucking freaky.
Oh my gosh that's an alarming sound to wake up to. Hope no one's hurt
Where are you located?
I woke up around 1am because there was this deep growl that sounded like the big garbage bins being rolled out of our condo tower. When my sleepy brain realized they don’t take the garbage at 1am I realized it was the wind. It’s so wild out!! Now BC Hydros map is a hot red mess

I’m awake trying to get back to sleep. Shouldn’t have come online.
It's loud the house is essentially moving from the wind it's wild
I am outside working in this. It’s not pleasant at all
I’ll be joining you out there shortly. Hopefully you have rain gear and are alsmot done.
Nope still got a 8 hrs left
May you’re day go by smoothly and quickly. My 8 starts in hour. 🫡
been out working traffic control alongside BC hydro since 3am stay warm, stay safe and drive with patience and caution out there pls folks.
thank you for your service 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 anyone working in this at that time is doing the WORK baby ❤️
Wind woke me up too. Mount pleasant is absolutely howling right now. I’m seeing some sporadic power flashes north of here too.
You see power flashes too? Green flares? Im at Sunset Beachm needless to say, ive been up since 130am. There waves crashing against the beach look huge
I’m by english bay, but not a sea facing unit. I wanted to go out to see the waves but the wind looked ferocious
I'm in mount pleasant too. I thought it was an earthquake. Woke up around 3:50am to my bed vibrating. Walls shaking. Seems to be calmer as of about 4:20 and I'm not smoking anything!
I absolutely hit my penjamin at 4:08 am 😂
Same, saw some flashes behind City Hall.
lightening you think or power lines getting trashed?
I'm just off 12 and my power has been out since 4
I slept very poorly on Monday night and decided to go to bed early last night.
Woke up at 2:45am and now i can't go back to sleep. The wind sounds incredible. I live on the 29th floor it's so loud...

28th here and it sounded like someone had broken in and was crashing around!
Is your unit shaking? I’m in a high rise too and it’s terrifying. So shaky
Not really. The windows a bit but the structure is solid.
Don't worry - wind exposure is a key consideration in modern high rise design. Our towers will not be blown over by a storm like this.
Oof, that sounds scary.
Yeah I wondered if it gets louder higher up. I'm on the 12th and it already feels loud.
I have a pine tree outside my bedroom and I’m just worried it’ll fucking fall on me while I’m asleep
I totally get that. There was a huge tree outside where I used to live. If I was still there, I’d be scared. I feel a lot of fear for my family rn who live in a heavily forested area. Maybe move out of harms way, just incase? :(
🤷♂️ my beds too comfy if I die I die
Literally same for me. Bf is sleeping like a baby and said not to worry, but i closed the blinds just so i didnt have to watch its ominous waving
Power went out :(
Same..and my children are all sick (4 yo and 1 year old twins). Gonna he a lonnnnnnnng day. Stay warm folks!
Oh damn, where are you located?
I’m on Fell Avenue by Mosquito Creek and our power is out.
Woke up my wife and I and our cat is so freaked out. No sleep for us in east van.
Yeah doggy keeps moving around here.
Just woke me up in North Vancouver! It is roaring outside
Welcome all to the ‘Can’t Sleep’ Club.
Just woke me up
It just woke me up in Maple Ridge. Hoping for a normal commute into the city in a few hours.
Dang I have to ride my mother for an appointment in the morning, hope it isn't too crazy
... you may want to juuust check that phrasing one more time. muffled snickers
Lolol it's so late 😆 I've been awake since 1am
Thinking about how rough it must be for people who live on the streets tonight
Oh my gosh yeah, holy shit. Me too.
I was thinking about that too, I was not lovin it in my warm dry apartment, how are they managing out there
If its this bad. Imagine Abbotsford
I havent seen any alerts about excess shelters. I hope they opened some up
Agreed…
😢
I like it, makes it sound like everything else doesn’t matter for once. this is what’s in control now.
Yeah maybe things will break and we won’t have to work. Ever again.
Also awake. Have merely catnapped since it started in the West End. So. Sleepy.
Same! My cat was freaked out and wanted under the covers lol.
Heads up to anybody heading to work downtown: according to the BC Hydro map, there's a power outage around Granville and 41st, so if that intersection is a four-way stop, traffic is going to be a gong show.

Shitting myself
Outage areas for y'all.
https://www.bchydro.com/power-outages/app/outage-map.html
Winds are coming in and out like waves! Woke me up about 20 minutes ago.
Yeah it’s pretty crazy out there. And with the power out it’s just eerie looking out the window and seeing silhouettes of trees swaying in the dark
I wanna see
Team not going into work today
If I could actually sleep, I'd fully expect to wake up in the Land of Oz
Same! Plus all the cocaine
Woke us up in North Van. Suddenly wind cut out almost instantly and its very calm now.
Agreed! Also in north van.. it seems like it’s gone!
Just got woken up from the wind as well. Heard a loud pop not too far away from me that sounded like a gunshot—definitely had to have been a tree or some branch falling onto something for sure.
Only just climbed into bed about three hours ago.
Lots of sailing boats going for joyrides around false creek
Power is out in maple ridge and the wind sounds like when you open a car window on the highway. I think I'll be using my phone data for a few days
Same boat. Can’t fall back asleep. Pets are scared
Our poor dog is freaking out!
For some reason it’s affecting the door to my room Sounds like someone is trying to open it from the other side 😩😩😩
Freaking creepy
Yea my cats been freaking out all night. Someone else’s lawn chair is in my backyard now.
i sometime joke to my friends that the walls are so thin its like im sleeping outside but this time its real lol
damn we all can’t sleep lol
Power’s out in Kerrisdale. Went out shortly after 4:00am. And in a place with 50+ year old insulation (or lack thereof) 🤞the candles generate enough heat. 🥶
Am I the only one who loves it?
When is it supposed to end…. Is it supposed to end? 🫨
It’s windy AF. I didn’t wind proof my balcony and had to go out searching for crap at 4am on the ground. Thank god I’m only on the 2nd level
I fear I'll perish in a natural disaster. Didn't wake up at all...
I started getting a bit sick yesterday which had become a fever by 10 or 11pm.
Woke up at 4am, covered in sweat, shivering from the fever, teeth chattering and and storm roaring on full throttle outside.
rather dramatic, all in all
I’m up getting ready to leave for a flight lol and watched my whole neighborhood in mount pleasant go dark. Sounded like my windows were going to just burst from the wind.
yo holy fuck same boat. cannot fucking sleep with all this noise. god bless
It’s so loud, no sound machine needed tonight.
We just lost electricity😭
Us too!
Same! I don’t think I’ve ever heard it this strong before. It’s kinda cozy being warm in bed while it’s cold & yucky out but also I just want to sleeeeep!
Had to go pee now im up
Lol woke up same time, can't fall back asleep
Been up since 3:50 ish too can’t sleep for shit anymore
We have no power in Burnaby currently.
West end, I’ve seen up since 3 as well
Yooo I’m awake cause I’m on the east coast but hope y’all are alright dang
I didnt sleep all night and had to wake up for work at 7am im so tired
I don’t think I got more than 4 hours of sleep last night. At one point the rain sounded like hail??
I was woken up around that time as well! Crazy blue skies now though!
Woke up at 330am hoping my walls wouldn’t collapse lol
Combination of the storm and recovering from two minor surgeries in the past couple days kept me awake the whole night.
Hoping others can catch up on some sleep! I’ll be trying for sure haha.
Normally I love being kept awake by weather, always have.
I'm just happy I woke up to a nice sunny morning!
Me and the cats are freaking out and I have to leave the home at 6:30 to go to work...
It’s scary!!! The wind is howling g im nervous as we have large trees by us
There are several sailboats washed up in English bay.. I've never seen it this bad
I love storms… bundled up and sat outside for awhile… but it got too dramatic and I kept envisioning getting taken out by a downed tree or flying branch. Caution prevailed.
Same. It's so loud. And I used to live in Lethbridge, I am by no means scared of high-speed winds lol. This is really something else!
Same. Pregnant and hormones / storm. Up again at 330am and work in 2 hours.
Same, but Okanogan.
The wind has been SLAMMING into my apartment building in Marpole since 12:45. Thankfully still have power.
https://preview.redd.it/slilpwuhar7g1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76935fdcc8e920c6aa0609c53420e3f3623d1dc7
Jericho wind 50 knots
That loud sound. Was thst the wind or thunder?
The trees are really moving. And the house is shaking 😭
Power just went out 15 minutes ago.
Lost power here, heard lots of loud sounds.
Lost power now ugh!! Gonna take hours for it to come back
Just had a snack to take my mind off things. Really is a powerful storm.
Woke up at 2:30 am here
Mose will never be the same…
Same time I woke up lol. Couldn’t go back to sleep.
I’m not home to check but there’s nooo way my patio furniture cover and pillows are still on my balcony…
This feels like living in Southeast asia
Closed my windows and thought I was lookouting out on the north sea
North Van has been wild. Siding panels blowing off of new construction. Patio tent in the bike lane. Lots of power out.
The power has been out for hours 😭
It woke me up at 1 am, it was crazy
Power is out in Burnaby as we speak
it really did sound so haunted, the wind was creepy as hell. woke up around 330 from all the construction tarps in my neighbourhood, they were making the craziest moaning sounds!
Didn’t even notice there was a storm over night

Yup, it kept me up too.
But hey! Now its sunny
I have outdoor curtains that were weighted down with 18 kg sandbags. They were all loose this morning
Our fence has been struggling for months. Last night did her in 😂😭
I thought my balcony glass railings were gonna break.
Woke up around 3AM. Grabbing all the items off the balcony. Absolutely wild. Now everything is covered in dirt and grime and I’ve been cleaning all morning.
Got woken up circa 3.30am by the wind blowing by my building. At first, I thought someone was spraying the windows or something.
Im in mt.pleasant. it was LOUD.
Yup... Woke me up too, wind pounding on my bed room window Main and King Ed
Just went for a drive to inspect the damage. Lots of trees/branches and other debris on the road in Burnaby right now. Wind is absolutely howling. Had to steer into it at points.

I just woke up too
I can’t sleep since 12am - my cats are so stressed 😰
Same here and looking for information, wondering if I'll have to go to work or maybe it's not that bad.
Wondering about getting to school today, but I’m gonna do it regardless, your girl refuses to break her no absences streak.
Im bout to sleep now lul
The foundation of this new house just shook and it sounded like the windows were coming off the frames. This is a new, multimillion dollar house in kits I’m sleeping in - not a flimsy old one.
I am legit afraid my apartment windows will break at any moment. It sounds so disturbing.
Ayyy I was just looking at the outage map for the north shore. Sure is windy out
Same
We just woke up. Power went out (Mt Pleasant)
yeah wasnt sure if i heard thunder rumbling or whatever earlier, but so much wind and rain is slapping all over the windows. spooked my dog too :(
lol why are we up …the storm . Why are we all here ? For each other
Not so bad in New West, but we did have some hail.
What?! New west is crazy. Ive been awake for 2 hours now. Living in an old building doesn't help lol. It seems to have gotten more calm than it was 30 minutes ago at least.. still preventing me from sleeping
you’re not the only one , it’s crazy
Same here
Woke me up about 45 minutes ago. In a high rise in DT. No sleeping until this stops! Walls are all creaking.
Same! Woke up and it’s so windy! I hope the power doesn’t go out.
I was already awake because I’m sick and I fell asleep at like 6pm, but the thunder still scared me lol. I’m listening to music loud as fuck in my headphones and I can still hear it
Wind and hail just makes it impossible to sleep for me…
The wind is strong enough where I am that it's making the rain hitting my door sound like someone is out there tapping at it and the motion activated light keeps going on. Banging noises from bins etc. knocking over in the surrounding area.
Crazy wind!! In Cloverdale
Me too. I’m in Kelowna and the wind was so strong it woke me up
Power is out in MP since 4 am: winds were howling, then boom, no power. Between Cambie, Main, Broadway and 16th apparently
There are gigantic trees right next to/hanging over home that always shed small sticks and branches with most wind. By the sounds of it, tonight they are BIG branches dropping right over my room and I’m honestly quite scared.
Man I live in Squamish and we’re known for our wind and we got nothing!
Same, I’m in a highrise in Coal Harbor and the wind is insane right now. Been woken up multiple times and now can’t sleep 😅
Does anyone else hear a weird howling noise. Sounds too low to be a coyote
I just walked to work, it's raining sideways
The storm hit Kelowna the same time.
if theres an earthquake, might not notice. thats kinda fun
I'm on the 5th floor and the wind is howling~
Yeah as I was waking up im like is there actually a storm that loud or is the fire alarm speaker making weird noises
cats are absolutely frightened, wish i could do more for them
Funny enough I woke up at 4, but for completely unrelated reasons (I was fortunate enough to sleep through the storm for the most part)
Environment Canada put out a special weather statement for the area. "A vigorous cold front will move across the BC interior this morning. In its wake, strong westerly wind gust will develop.....may lead to possible tree damages, outages, delays....winds will ease later this morning as the front tracks eastward."
We have incredible insulation so we hear nothing. Kinda sucks cuz my wife and I love the sound of the weather.
Why are you in the no sleep club then 🙃
I wake up at 440am everyday to get ready for work
Bad here too im by Victoria drive Power been out for hours
Keep hearing branches thumping on my roof. 😬
Wind is crazy, pushed a big storage shelf full of planters over on my patio
I procrastinated on work and fell asleep on the couch. The storm woke me up thankfully.
Same
I slept right through it lol. Woke up to no power though 😢
