Hi there,

Was wondering if I could get some insight on my new to me typewriter.

I have a Smith Corona Coronet I’ve noticed when I reverse the ribbon it tends to pop out and I’m not sure why. I’ve tried replacing it, reinserting it, but can’t seem to find a solution.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

  • Forgive me if this is too obvious (aka have you tried turning it off and on), but are you sure the ribbon is securely in? With my SC, it needs to be threaded in from the top and bottom. Like the top (black) part gets feed in and then the bottom (red) part gets feed into the bottom. It’s hard to explain, I think this videos does a good job, towards the end. https://youtu.be/3-nmQNDd_qQ?si=5jyVG5aK-TDq2kK8

This typewriter has a different arrangement from yours.

OP, here the ribbon is slid in straight from the top, between a front arm with a dimple in it and the back arm that the dimple presses against. It can be a little tricky to get it in there and sometimes people don't get it right.

Also, the arms may have been bent apart so that the dimple isn't tight against the back arm.

Both of those situations can cause this symptom.

  • If that's the pinch style ribbon vibrator which it looks like, you just need to form the front half of the finger a bit to press the back half more firmly, with needle nose pliers or tweezers even.
