I posted earlier but didn’t realize the extent of surgery that would be needed- a hemipelvectomy (pelvis bone is necrotic). He’s a goldendoodle, is 12.5 years old, 85 lb (healthy weight but large dog) with Lumbosacral disease. I think the answer is probably no (will ofc consult surgeons). His bone is necrotic and at risk for fracture. I guess my other question is — he’s still engaged, just a bad limp and not as active- if we do either euthanize or surgery, I hope we can at least enjoy the holiday with him?

That is a big surgery for a very large dog like yours who is also 12.5 years old.
Edited for sensitivity: I understand now from your comment that you have small children and understandably, it’s their holiday you’re trying to keep happy.
Either way, it would be very sad for children to either lose the dog or see him wounded and struggling to get around.
Remembering him the way he was might be a lot less traumatic, depending on the ages of the children.
Thank you. I figured as much and waiting to hear back from our vet about next steps. I have 2 small kids to think about on Christmas too, so that’s my concern re the holiday but I understand your view. It’s a hard balance
Oh no…he’ll be in such pain if you do that surgery! Google it…it’s just terrible. Enjoy your holidays and then let him go.
Thank you 💔❤️ I know that’s what I think we will do- it helps to have outsiders agree for some reason. Going to speak to vet about pain meds so he’s comfy and then figure it out 🥺
