A short but lovely encounter, a mother and her baby Cozumel trash panda, washing leaves in a fountain at Plaza Aventura during my vacation.

  • This photo shows more than 1% of the global population of the critically endangered Cozumel raccoon. The primary source of their endangerment is the loss of habitat due to human encroachment for the development of the tourist trade on the island. They aren't as adaptive as their mainland cousins and they are now pretty much doomed as a species because of us. Seeing these raccoons grubbing around in a resort fountain isn't wholesome, it's heart-breaking.

Sorry, I got it wrong, I confused the Cozumel raccoon with its almost identical cousin. The Cozumel raccoon has a slightly smaller snout. Sorry for the confusion. It was still a very pleasant encounter, though it makes me sad for the Cozumel raccoons.
