Hey everyone!
I'm needing a bit of help. I changed my name a few years ago and kept my deadname as a middle name (hyphenated with my original middle name, which I'm keeping) I'm getting my gender marker changed this year and I was wondering how I'd go about removing my deadname?
It was a good idea at the time but I've grown to hate that decision. I was wondering if I could just get it dropped when I apply for a new birth certificate. How would I go about that? Do I have to apply for another name change?
Thanks in advance
Yes, in order to change your name you have to file a change of name as well as the change of sex or gender.
This means you’ll need to pay both fees too.
I was told (and this was borne out when I got the certificates), that if you file both at the same time then the birth certificate won’t have the section listing previous names, but I would assume that your current birth certificate already has that, so I don’t know what happen in that case.
(My change of name certificate also lists that I changed my name from and to my deadname on the date that I got married, so it would appear that the system is not without its hiccoughs)
Will depend upon your state or territory. But fundamentally it's another legal name change the same as you did before. In most states & territories they can be done in the same application as gender.
I did something similar with my dead name & had it removed when I did the gender change a year later
In WA, your old name and sex won’t show on your new birth certificate
Yeah just depends on your state, in SA you can do them together when doing a gender marker change and it's quick, I just did mine and it took 13 days from submitting it but they usually estimate 3-4 weeks.
Yep in WA I'm 99% sure it's another name change application. Gender marker change became quite a lot more easy last year. Basically will need to submit a name change form and gender change form at the same time, then you'll get a change of name certificate and replacement birth certificate out of it. Cost me $448 late last year.
