hello it's me of hole acid fame, back with another garment-related question

most t-shirts are way too long on me, as I have a very short torso (even by "women's" standards)

Usually I tuck t-shirts into my pants or I cut my t-shirts shorter with scissors, but I'd love to be able to just buy a t-shirt that hits my hips and not my knees!! I suck at alterations so sewing them is not an option for me.

Any recommendations for brands/styles that make men's t-shirts or tank tops that aren't too long? I'd love plain clothes without logos or patterns if possible.

edit: I'm somewhat chubby (I wear between a men's L and XL) so sadly the time-honoured tradition of buying clothes from the kid's section isn't an option for me :')

edit 2: I've had top surgery, so things fitting my chest isn't a huge issue, at least!

  • AS Colour men's in the 5cm shorter range

amazing, did not know about that!

This, especially the ‘heavy’ / thicker fabric

  • Kmart shirts are unironically a good pick for this. I’d suggest just buying a few styles and seeing what sticks

Source - someone who owns about 20 Kmart shirts

slay! love a cheap option, thank you king

Can back that up as someone with the opposite-ish problem. I'm short but because of my weight gathering mostly on my stomach, anything that isn't long enough rides up or looks like a crop top on me.

Last year Anko ditched one of the only singlet/tanks I could find that fit me well in favour of selling a style that comes up way too short for larger sizes, only realised after I'd given them a wash that they weren't the same any more. I'm still salty about it lmao

So yeah, OP might have decent luck with their stuff at Kmart.

  • new h&m shirts are pretty nice, otherwise i wear dangerfield short sleeve collared shirts and secondhand most often

  • It's the Hole Acid Coiner!!!

I was randomly thinking about you the other day when I noticed a new hole that my hole acid had created. Fucking legend.

My answer is unhelpful because it's op shops and my family/friend's closets soz

    hahahaha im HONOURED

  • I can’t sew either so whenever I buy shirts I just factor in the cost of alterations. If a shirt is $45 I ask myself will I pay $55 and if I will I buy them and take them to the supermarket alterations place. If you take in a few at once they usually don’t charge you as much :))

  • As Colour. They have a '5cm shorter' range. Also, their Women's versions of the Men's tshirts are the exact same cut everywhere except the length. They are literally the same tshirts but shorter. (A sales rep told me this once and I've verified it by holding a mens and women's shirt up next to each other).

Uniqlo AIRism Oversized Crew Neck T-Shirt. Nice boxy tshirt that is the perfect length.

    hell yeah, thanks so much!

  • Kmart and H&M!

I've noticed mens crop tops are in fashion now so try that for potentially a regular fit on you? Idk what stores though

  • cotton on had some boxy cropped Ts a few months ago. I don't know if they were in the M or F section (i needed a specific colour for work) They give extra shoulder gains and sat above my hips. I am tall but have a short torso

  • If it's any conciliation im MTF and most women's tops look like crop tops on me😁 Personally i love op shops. Shein and Temu are of course good although I must admit I've never looked for men's clothes there.

  • Okay I HAVE THE ANSWER I FIGURED IT OUT! It’s the boxy oversized T-shirts. I get mine at asos. They’re shorter but not cropped and sit at the perfect height. Buy a cheap one and try it out. They’re actually not huge or too oversized. They sit squarely and don’t bunch up around the curves.

thank you short man big eggplant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! legend!

  • Short cut or crop works best

I'm not tall and wearing shirts that fit me everywhere else tend to be long so a short or crop style works best, can be a bit short at times though

glad to hear you've found something that works for you! where do you buy your short cut and crop tees from?

I wear a lot of plain shirts and chuck something light over it so I buy from Homie!

I found them pretty good for my body - short and chunky haha

You can see the shirts sit at the cis model's hips so they're just a tad longer on me :) made well too, bit spenny but worth it imo

*Bro your user name is fucking fantastic 😂😚👌

hahaha it's a very unmasculine username, i've tried to change it but it won't let me.

thanks for the link! i've actually been looking into the Homie tees but was unsure about making the leap since they're a bit spenno.

sorry to bug you but i get a bit overwhelmed by choice.... which specific Homie t-shirt style do you buy? I see they've got a basic tee; streetwear tee; staple tee; heavyweight tee; and heavyweight cropped tee. which is SO MANY OPTIONS hahaha. which do you go for?

  • I can vouch for cropped t-shirts from cotton on and asos, definitely look into cropped styles because I have the same fit problem as you :D

Yeah that’s the one I have, it’s a nice fabric too, quite structured

good to hear! I don't love super thin / unstructured t-shirts so that's great actually

  • I am 5'3 and have the same problem, as for the style of shirt- I would recommend boxy/ box fit shirts, something with a heavier/ thicker fabric helps if you wear a binder too. Cropped crew necks are one of my favourite styles. Or a 70s era polo/ knit polo, they can be buttoned up, cropped, long or can be tucked into pants easily.

Fortunately I can sew, so I take the hem and raise it by an inch or so to make the bottom edge rest just above my ass for a semi cropped look. Could probably get that done by an alterations place if you're financially able to.

Thankfully cropped looks for mens clothing is coming back into style. You can see it in the cheap/ fast fashion places like cotton on and h&m, the cropped checkered shirt is on every 16 year old guy right now it's kind of funny.

  • Uniqlo have some good shirt variety, otherwise learning to hem tshirts has been a game changer for me!

  • Big fan of factorie/cotton on boxy fit tees. Helps hide my hips. I have a longer torso they look a little more cropped on me but still a good length

  • The kids section. 😅 Otherwise Jayjays or Yd have XXS sizes.

lol! thanks for the tip, but I'm actually pretty chubby so kid's / XXS sizes aren't an option for me unfortunately. Finding t-shirts that fit my width without being way too long is a challenge!!

  • honestly, pretty much all my shirts (aside from basic kmart tops) are band merch from concerts, but i agree with the other commenter who said kmart! if you find that theyre still too long, you can always crop them yourself

  • op shops and online second hand places like depop

  • Uniqlo button downs are usually a good length for me

nice! they're a bit too long for me usually, but definitely less-too-long than a lot of other options
