It’s my dog’s name (he just turned 2 today) and he quite literally saved my life while I was having the worst year mental health-wise. Would it be okay as a tribute name even though it’s not really a human name? I was also thinking altering it slightly into a bit more human-y name like Otto but it feels a bit too far from his name. If you don’t think it’s a good idea, any suggestions?

People might give you shit for it but in my opinion as long as it's 1) a real name, 2) has a positive association for you, and 3) most people don't associate it with something or someone terrible, you're in the clear.
You don't have to tell people it's a tribute to your dog anyway. If it makes you happy, just do it.
Maybe it's a cultural difference (I'm not from an English speaking country) but I think Odie sounds like a cute name. Reminds me of Otis but sounds less old fashioned to me. Fine as a middle name.
Oh yes, Otis was the other alternate name I thought of
Please no. The most famous Otis being the drunk on the Andy Griffith show.
Never heard of him and I’m not gonna let a random drunk stop me from honouring something that saved me
I'm good with Odie, it's Otis that was the drunk.
I think it would be fine. It's the name of the cartoon dog in Garfield, and people will ask him about that, but middle names don't get nearly as much teasing as first names.
Odysseus, Odell, Odin, Otis can also all become Odie
Name him Ozymandias Diatomaceous and call him OD
I had a ferret named Ozymandias when I was little!
Nobody ever uses Ozymandias as a name these days...
I live in Scotland and a lot of people have their mother's maiden name as their middle name. I can think of people who actually have Odie as a middle name, i.e. Stewart Odie Thomson (that one's not a real person, but probably does exist!). To me, it wouldn't sound strange at all.
I'm glad your pupper has been such a help to you My soul cat's name was Gizmo, which wouldn't make a good person name at all!!
i'm not scottish but i am nova scotian and it's very very common there too, and i'm suddenly wondering if this is not a common thing in other places lol?? my brother literally has our moms moms maiden name as his middle name haha
My cousin has the middle name Scott. Her first Is Katie.
...do you also have a jazz cat and a hiphop cat?
My middle name is my mother's maiden name. We are not Scottish, though I'm sure there's some down the line somewhere; I'm whiter than white, except for my freckles and I burn in a hearbeat.
I’m actually like 12.5% Scottish or something so if it’s not super strange there I don’t think it’ll be a problem
We know a little girl named Odette who's been called Odie her whole life, so I don't think it's that wild.
I was named after my mother’s favorite dog. Albeit, it’s a human name. If I have a daughter, I’m keeping with the tradition and naming her Alice, after my dog. Her nickname was Al. I’m very pro Odie. Odin is a good full name!
That’s also a great alternative!
I'm fine with it, middle names and pet names get a pass from me. Most folks don't use their middle names in day to day life, so I say go with it!
I'll forever think of Garfield.
This. It's okay as a dog name or as a nickname, but as an official name for a human... Ehh.
middle names dont usually matter
A bit weird, but if you're gonna give your kid a weird name, the middle one's good for it.
Also, Odie is a human name.
Well I associate it with Garfield, but I don’t know I’d give my son a name that sounds like “O.D.”
That would probably matter more if it was his first name. Can’t imagine it being too much of a problem as a middle name, unless his first name sounds like a medication!
I like it.
Middle names can be on the odd side of normal and still be ok, Odie is acceptable within my arbitrary limits.
I had a cat named Odie.
My brother’s cat is Odie!
It's fine.
It's a real name. And your dog is important to you. He's a important person in your life. Absolutely use it.
Absolutely fine. It's not even a tragedy name.
I love the reason behind it, and it's a perfectly fine middle name. Give your very good pup a scritch from me! ❤️
Will do :)
I consider my dog's name (Amélie) being put somewhere into a future daughter's name if I ever have a daughter
My aunt had a best friend named Odie. First name. Born in the 1950’s. My grandfather was Otis and his nickname was Odie.
Like the dog from Garfield? Not a fan, but, not my kid.
That’s who he was named after by his foster mom, yeah
Don't worry about this. My little cousin named his sister after the older cousin's dog. Normal girl name here though. All good girls here.
As a middle name it's fine, you're more likely to suffer "we named the dog Indiana" jokes than people commenting on the name itself.
I don’t know, I think it’s fine. It’s cute that your naming kid after a dog, but I could also see why you’re worried about what people will think. The only hang up for me is it being the same name as Odie from Garfield, which itself is a bit odd, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a dealbreaker. Maybe it would be a bit better in my opinion to go with a more “human like” full name, but if you really want to just go with Odie. I think you should. Especially if it’s just a middle name.
I am seriously considering using Odie as his middle name, definitely not a first name.
Yeah in that case I’d just say go with it. The people who see his middle name may point the Garfield thing (probably not even most people), but it’s not really a negative association. It really doesn’t even matter if a few people don’t like it Lol as long as it has meaning to you.
I think it's fantastic. Everybody loved my dog to the point that they won't name their kids anything like his name, Sam. We name our pets after people. Why not the opposite?
I immediately think of a dog whenever I see Odie in any capacity
I know a guy whose name is Odie. It's a human name, it's just unusual.
Odie the dog! We have an Odie the dog too! I showed him this post and he ran away, so I don't think he's on board with it. But I am!
This made me smile:)
Oden wouldn't be a horrible middle name
I’ve thought of this too
Odysseus "Odie" Quentanyl (quentin + fentanyl)
“We named the DOG Indiana!” That’s all I have to say about that.
You could compromise and go with Odin? That is a human name
Odie is a great middle name! I think it’d be an acceptable first as well, but I’m also biased as I am a total geek for Garfield
Heaven’s gate cult used “-ody” added to their names (pronounced odie) so no, I would not like it as a middle name. But the average person might not pick up on that fact.
