Piper is a wild child who came home with me 6 weeks ago as a foster to adopt. I lost two of my three cats between August and September and the remaining, Scout, was lonely. Her internist suggested a kitten rather than an adult cat based on Scout's temperament. She's doing really well for her age with the baby, and correcting her as she needs to, but Piper is not certain about getting affection. Her primary vet said "she's a tortie so she'll have an attitude" and that scares me!
So - what's your experience? I know it's often personality dependent, but has the stigma been proven for you?

Yes, but our other cat isn't too crazy about her 😕
The picture says it all.
It really does 😆
That’s like my two! When I rescued Ollie (my orange boy) I had an older tabby and Ollie LOVED him - was always looking to snuggle and share a sleeping space with. After my old man passed, I adopted Annie, my tortie. She LOVES Ollie, but Ollie just tolerates her.

Well, she does occasionally like her brother. Especially when it's chilly.
My tortie loves humans but isn't keen on other cats. That's just my experience.
Torties like to be the center of attention.
https://preview.redd.it/fub910fc2o8g1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36a14fe381c91e24024ebe737dd4d05bbfc48eae
I got my adult tortie a baby torti(co) three weeks ago and thankfully they are besties already. ❤️ The adult tortie had never met another cat before so there was a chance this could have backfired splendidly.
They are so adorable together. 🥰
https://preview.redd.it/dofl1fnsvn8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9313ab37e4e2b19d5f2a5bba35235d02d34c6ff
She loves her brother, but she's still trying to get rid of her sister.
Same
Mine hates our other cat passionately 11 years later.
This made me laugh but I truly hope this isn’t my cats in 10 years, so far we are on month 8 and they are definitely not what I would call friends
I lived this too. My second cat lived 12 years, and my tortie resented her all 12. She's so happy to be an only child (I do think though it's up to the individual, mine is just an only-child type gal).
https://preview.redd.it/d2usrttkao8g1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf7f5c81c2a772ce3e7fd0c144a7e7df27dde588
Mab ( standard tortie) and Ophelia (dilute tortie) are good friends, while Nyx (dark tortie), is more independent but will still play and sometimes cuddle with her sisters. I have had several other torties in the past and feel it just depends on their personality.
Ahh! We have the same combo. Dark, standard and dilute. And my dilute and standard are obsessed with each other while my dark is more independent.
https://preview.redd.it/8q8qbhhcdq8g1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aad27aa1ddfb7edb2e5aa93f11d504a87273b6d0
My tortie will usually tolerate my other cats being in her space. She will occasionally get playful or boisterous with them, but she isn't always the instigator there.
Her main expression of her tortitude is to just yell repeatedly whenever I get water from the fridge.
https://preview.redd.it/bkcj28lczn8g1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95273ebed13c0d4a6b537353d32c003b026a4e43
No, with one glaring exception.

Both my torties fancy themselves as the household Mamas. Here's one with a younger cat she adopted. My 2 torties are actual sisters and accept every other cat in sight, but plot to end each other. Sibling rivalry over who gets the other cat's snuggles?
My tortie loves other cats and dogs! Shes a very loving girl, I’ve had three other cats in the time I’ve had her and she’s wanted to be friends with every single one. But our other cat isn’t a fan of returning her affection 😔
my tortie loves her two brothers

What a cuddle puddle !
ikr absolutely melts my heart
This is the cutest!!! 🥹💗(p.s. those suction cups are LEGIT lol 💪)
right??? absolutely insane 😭
My tortie hates other cats :/ I got her from the shelter bc her previous owners got a second cat and she simply couldn’t tolerate not being the star of the show. I would hope that since you’re introducing them as a kitten that she would be able to get used to the other cat since that would be all she really knew.
Mine does ok with the other family cat. They don’t cuddle, but they will occasionally share a short grooming lick.
Biscuits loved my senior cat who recently passed, but the male Tuxie who has been living in HER apartment with HER mama? He can go to hell.
No, generally can’t stand them even though I have several. She has learned to tolerate on of them who is absolutely obsessed with her for some reason though.
https://preview.redd.it/pagj40g2zn8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90b8205902f4c42e3c40040b3009b97c84a1df6c
My girls love their together time, and they also love their independence. 2 year difference and introduced when the burnt toast babe was about 4 months old. (2 years and 4 years now).
I got both my cats at a cat cafe so they already knew each other and are very social, but I do realize that's a special circumstance. They aren't siblings, but may as well be. They get along great with each other and other people (I think! They've only ever met my dad and girlfriend!)
Cat tax included! They're Toffee (tortie) and Mocha (void).
https://preview.redd.it/8sk5ny4i0o8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac1e279038a225cf45d69e7601cb1df8864b082a
My tortie pretends to hate her siblings, but we often catch her trying to snuggle or play with them. When she spots us, she hisses at the other cats to keep up the charade 😒
She’s secretly obsessed with her siblings. 😻
https://preview.redd.it/dcb22l9gyp8g1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab78cbc560b240c40090f572d455af27a1bd5b55
I introduced them when she was 40 days old so I don’t know if this counts cause she considered him as a dad I think for some time 😅 But they are so bonded now and they come as a pair everywhere
She is a generous queen to her subjects that submit to her peaceful rule.
Not really
Nope. Causes a massive stress reaction where she stops eating and hides inside of couches. She’s a solo kitty.
Mine is the baby in our clowder and tries so hard to get the oldest to play with her, but the oldest is a cranky old lady who wants nothing to do with a cat fourteen years younger than she is, and the tort gets in trouble if she jumps on her anyway. She's settled for terrorizing her much bigger brothers.
Thanks all! Hopefully she'll like Scout because she's growing up with her!
My tortie will hiss and growl at any cat that comes onto our property... except strays. She's always been tolerant of strays, maybe because she was one herself when she first came to us.
aww. mine was also a stray when we took her in. she was only a year old or so, vet estimated. she instantly wanted to be friends and play with my mom's calico. i took her with me when i got my apartment, and then my roommate also wanted a cat. tortie loved him. roommate moved out and i took in another stray, an all black female. tortie thought "yay! a new friend!" void's not about her at all, but thankfully she's gone from being afraid of her (hissing/growling) to coexisting.
My tortie (Coco, 9) never really got friendly with our ‘new’ cat, Toby. And he’s a year old now. It’s definitely better than in the beginning, but friends they ain’t.
https://preview.redd.it/fi1epbggdo8g1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b203133c1f499209197ce909e9712f1f44b70dbc
Circe loves Electra more than Electra would like; Calypso loves Electra too but not as forcefully. Circe and Calypso (both torties and from same litter) love each other sometimes, and bite each other sometimes. All get along with dog, but Circe especially wants to play with Pepper.
https://preview.redd.it/gqyw0sraeo8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7751d5446aafeec528eea75b86c667643f879ffd
Yes, they like each other 🖤🧡

Aside from the nightly game of grabass, they tolerate each other
https://preview.redd.it/qlgu03m11p8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d78792553935ed0e14027b11b8ad1633adeaf26
Our first (the one in the basket) was an only child for three years. I thought she’d lose her mind when we got her a sister, but she handled it so well! The kitten was more pissed about the whole situation than she was. They’re best friends now and it’s only been 6 months. They’re not overly affectionate with each other, no co-sleeping or bathing each other, but they are almost always right next to each other
My tortie never did like the other cats, to be honest.
My first tortie was fine with other kitties. Our second tortie was fine with male cats but wasn’t nice to our other female cat. We currently have one tortie (our third) and 2 boys; she’s a bit of a diva and tries to push the boys around, but they hold their own with her so things are peaceful for the most part. It all depends on the particular cat. With her being a kitten, the odds are in your favor that things will go well.
She did not
Yes. She is overly friendly with the three other cats in the house. One is an orange tabi that is her brother. One is her mother, another orange tabi. The last one is a void that doesn't appreciate being seen by other cats.
Interestingly, the torti is the only one that dislikes the feral torti (her aunt or grandmother) that mostly lives on our back porch.
We adopted a tux tortie more than a year ago. She is great around other cats. So we thought we’d get her a playmate to help her lose weight (she’s a chonk.) About a month ago, we got another tortie. The younger one growls at the older one, hisses at her and has peed in the shower. The older one pays her no mind and generally wants to play. I’m trying to convince myself they need to work it out, but it’s stressful. I love torties, but man they have ‘tude lol.
My tortie likes other cats. When she was a kitten I had an elderly cat who wanted nothing to do with her, which was understandable, she was a hyper kitten and my other cat was a very old lady. My boyfriend also has a cat that’s the same age as my cat, and when we first started dating I’d bring her over for kitty play dates and they got along right away. Now we live together and our cats are good friends. They don’t really cuddle, but I always find them sleeping next to each other. Usually once a day we have “Kitty fuck around hour” where they’re all hyped up playing tag and bopping/tackling each other.
My two (one passed in January 2024) didn't mind them, but not the most fond of them.
My tortie is 7months now and obsessed with her tabby sister and all three of my dogs. I can guarantee you the fur pattern has nothing to do with personality. All cats are different and life experiences will be a huge determining factor. If anything people are joking about ‘tortitude’ a cat of any color can be an asshole and all cats are assholes sometimes.
Cat tax

TOTALLY!!!😻

my tortie hates both humans & fellow cats, though there are some cats she tolerates, like the 3 out of the 4 cats we're fostering right now! she still avoids them as much as possible, only staring from a distance & never bothering to play. as for the 4th... the hatred towards him is mutual at least ;
she also puts up with some humans, but on rare occasions, even allowing to be pet or fed depending on her mood
ironically, Pepper's "tortitude" really only comes out with the people she's close with, aka our immediate family. in one second, she's lightly (but aggressively???) biting & pawing at us, then in the next, she's suddenly purring & showing affection
Not a single bit. We’ve fostered other cats over the years and I’ve learned my tortie is more accepting of other girl cats, especially kitten torties. Otherwise, nah lol she’ll always be on guard.
My tortie loves boy cats but doesn’t like girl cats.
But she loves people, dogs, and toddlers! Her only attitude is relentless love.
https://preview.redd.it/txkp4tfs8o8g1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce3c9159d509c4613a8cc7d8c4410b17a67afb1e
Does Miso Soup like the other four in the house? Yes. Do the other four like her? Not all the time lol.
https://preview.redd.it/ihz4iiwhao8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bf84c3ad239c7cea679e0006e1abed3dae9fde7
sometimes i catch them caring about each other
Noooo. The other cat is obsessed with her, but the tortie would like to think she's the only cat who exists.
My tortie loves me. No pick ups tho. HATES other cats.
According to the foster, yes.
My little one came bonded to a standard issue. I’m not sure I believe they are bonded level after watching them grow up, but they get along most days with only a little hissing cause my boy is a little rough playing sometimes. They don’t cuddle but they’ll groom each other and are frequently found in the same room.
https://preview.redd.it/i3bm8xh0eo8g1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=306030ca26ea3a6ce690b45f7ed5418385dfd0b9
These 2 get along usually. Like any siblings, they have fights occasionally but it's pretty rare.
Nope! Will actually she likes her adopted sister but only in private. We catch em snugglin every so often. Otherwise it's hissville.
Mine allows our big American Short Hair to exist.
She is 1/3 his size and still goes after him sometimes.
my girl has a cat brother but she doesn’t like to show affection to him in front of her humans 😅
Both torties I've had LOVED other cats.
https://preview.redd.it/94j7d9dsgo8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7147faa0e852af9403d01a3a3a970a12392b411
my tortie has always been in love with my first tuxie since i’ve brought her home!
Mine’s very animal friendly, she loves other animals, bonded to our three cats here. Loves to visit my brothers cats and puppy and play with them all as if she were a puppy herself. But she was also raised by us and our cats.
She is the boss of the other cats and the youngest
https://preview.redd.it/5cye538zho8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09d7c4739147cbbf5f56013c7182ccd643e8c0fe
She tolerates her sister. We adopted our Tortie when she was around two or three. She was a TNR and didn’t get along with the other persons cats so they needed to find her a new home lol. Then about a year later we got a kitten cause we thought she needed a friend. 8months later and their relationship is improving. Just not bffs yet. The kitty is way more energetic than our tortie but I guess that’s to be expected. They will be okay, just give them some time to get familiar with each other.
Hell no!!!
Ha!!! 😹
Yes… but she’s a little prickly about it lol
She deeply tolerates my oldest cat (who was here first lol) but could not possibly hate the twin boys I got a couple years ago. She's def a lone wolf.
https://preview.redd.it/r6wjmadrmo8g1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69f3d8c96a3435d8bdf0749c20e71aec5284e9b4
My tort only likes me. She tolerates others
Our tortie is good with our two younger little cats, but she seems to enjoy harassing one of them more than the other. Apart from that, they usually cuddle together or close to each other.
Izzy loves her brother (although he doesn’t always love her back) and loves to cuddle humans
https://preview.redd.it/vpxtcb0eno8g1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f307b5f84e01f1f5817419652bdd7f55bf1831ee
Yes. My other cat is undecided if he likes her though. 😀
https://preview.redd.it/afg0f0iuqo8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4784f0b305d374a9bd8e9db1a0e0f3ba63b9bcff
She is uniquely her!
My last tortie disliked all the other cats I got after her for 19 years. My new tortie kitten LOVES her big siblings whether they like it or not. Big old tortie lady who hated them all passed, now they're terrorized by her tiny clone who adores them.
My tortie girl loves little kittens, whom she mothers (she had kittens before she came to me, and then adopted three orphaned kittens after her litter was weaned). She insists that older kittens have manners, and finds one year olds a bit insufferable. (To be fair, my other cats agree on the one year olds.)
Generally she gets along fairly well with other cats? But she hated our current foster when he first came to live with us. He was about seven months old, and un-neutered. At one point, he was lying splayed out and she came over and hissed at his balls. Now he's been fixed, and she's chilling out about him.
It really comes down to the individual cats.
Ball hissing, very strange!!! 😹
I too have been thinking about getting a kitten for my tortie, but she really doesn’t like other cats who come to our garden though I think that’s more of a territory thing. She has an attitude but is so scared that I think it’s all mouth no action! I was thinking a kitten will be good for her to interact etc and be the boss so to speak. Be interesting how yours get along as the little one grows up.
Charo loves her nephew Stix so much that she sits on him. (Stix is on my lap, and Charo is on Stix.)
https://preview.redd.it/jkbezm5lpq8g1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=d347aa07db8d9867a418954229018eb1804d1d33

Yes! She was supposed to be a foster but she bonded with Rupert so she had to stay. They love each other so much
My Tortie hated other cats. Just yelled at them all the time, peed outside the litter box.
https://preview.redd.it/0pak19krfo8g1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=4795991ac44bc98c7842261d3e777151734a821e
I got my girl a boyfriend when she was 5 (he was 6). I knew she'd like him because she is the embodiment of love, but he was a crap shoot. Fortunately, he came from a hoarding situation so he was used to having other cats around and within 2 weeks they were snuggle buddies. Couldn't have worked out better.
It's just a colour not a personality. My torties have been sweet, loving cats. My current one, Skadi adores all our other cats and sleeps under the bed covers with me at night. Your vet was probably joking but I wish they learn to not spread stereotypes.
No 😢💔
https://preview.redd.it/n6y8fhpt9p8g1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8131b744b85b730e48534a26567ab34b056170fa
they tolerate each other! but it took a lot of time 🙈
She loved her siblings but now other cats beat her up so she’s wary
My cat used to always know when a certain cat was outside and she would get so serious and go stare out the window. But she would only end up fogging up a spot on the window. Making these tough sounding growls and yawls.
Nope she does not.
I have had 3 torties, and they did not like each other. The oldest one didn't like any other cats, after she weaned them. The second one loved her brother,tabby...she didn't get along with the rest..some of the other cats bullied her,one was very jealous of her. And the last one tolerated other cats.Sometimes they could approach her and it was okay, other times.she'd hiss and swat.
I adopted 3 adult cat, last June from someone rehoming some of their cats.Mattie was not pleased. She hissed at them. She'd sit and look at me like I betrayed her. She swatted at one.He swatted back. She got him once, with a swat, and he got her once with a swat, and after that, they were okay. She still kept her distance, and afterwhile they even ate together.
One night,Thomas...the one she had showdowns with, decided to sleep in my bedroom....where Mattie always slept.I thought for sure, they'd have a cat fight, but they didn't.
My girl, Izzy, loves me. Doesn't care for interactions with other people or other cats, aside from her brothers before I moved.
My tortie is extremely social. She loves other cats, people, dogs…. Like all things, it depends on the cat. She is very vocal, which is the most tortitude she usually shows
My tortie loves other cats. Her brother passed away, but she adored him. Now she is patiently trying to make friends with our calico, who is not friendly 😭
So far, no. But also so far she's only been around cats who don't like cats. She's really into dogs though.
A hard no, whilst being the size of a large hamster lol
She's alright but she is definitely very very very human-centered. That's been my experience with other torties too.
It’s hard to say with my girl. She’ll be open to sleeping with the other cat and a little bit of cleaning and playing. Though her tolerance is low and definitely let’s him have it when she’s done. I see it as a “omg my brother is so gross but I guess I sort of love him anyways”.
Mine loved other cats. All the outdoor kitties were her friends and mentors. It was anyone other than me that she had no interest in.
https://preview.redd.it/xnx3am598s8g1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a73fca217a90ba99e0998932feeffbde2227f87
yup! my tortie lexa was adopted with her brother zigzag (the orange one) when they were both 2 months old, they’re nearly 8 months old now :) they adore each other and my bf and i are direct witnesses to their mma fights all day

Olive and Bailey love each other. Besties within 2 hours of meeting 😻
I adopted my tortie when she was two months old. She’s always been very playful and active. I realized after around 6 months that she might be happier with a friend who could match her energy, so I adopted a second kitten. They’ve been besties ever since. 😻😻
https://preview.redd.it/leyfyhikis8g1.jpeg?width=3354&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8057c5d4c5b3389ec8601ca01c0bb8f0def3f675
I have four cats, two torties. While they both definitely have attitude, they couldn't be more different.
My senior girl, Little Cat (14-ish) dislikes every human, cat, or living thing on the planet, except her bonded brother, Stormy. She doesn't like pets, doesn't like treats, doesn't like play, doesn't like anything except being warm and cuddling with Stormy. She's been that way since I got her at ~4 months old. We joke that she's Stormy's emotional support cat.
My teenage tortie Ozzie (18 months) is a mischievous cuddly thing. She is stubborn, but super social with her littermate and wants nothing more than attention from people. She got even cuddlier after her spay and now will grab my hand and pull it to her head until I give sufficient scritches.
I guess stubbornness is a key feature of both of them, though.
Btw Ozzie looks a LOT like your Piper! :-) They even have matching chin patches.

She tolerates her annoying younger brother.
she does not, she flies solo 💅🏻
My Tortie tries with my cow cat but it’s no go!! This is about as close as they will sit together!!

My tortie came to me as a semi-feral girl who was taken from momma too soon, she was a big cats cat when she was with the foster, once I got her she started getting more comfortable and now shes a velcro kitty. And she LOVES my tabby girl so much that it annoys her 🤣 so yes, she loves everybody and is very clingy
My Penny absolutely loves all the other pets in the house.

My tortie, Bean is the younger. We adopted my FIL’s cat when he passed. This is about as tolerant as they get with each other besides they will snack together. They loveeee screaming at us and each other lol. But i feel like they only maintain the peace so hubby and I aren’t fussing at them 🥹😅
My tortie doesn’t mind dogs but takes a long time to warm up to other cats. Even when she’s “warmed up” to a cat she still won’t cuddle or be affectionate it’s more tolerate than anything.
Nope. She'll cry in the garden for other cats and as soon as they approach she turns into savage and tries to murder them, the only thing that stops her is the fact I've catproofed my garden
Absolutely not. Only cat she ever loved was her late sister. Since then, she wants nothing to do with other cats. She loves people, though!

I have a dilute tortie and her bonded sister that are each other's shadows. She does get wild hairs every once in awhile that stirs up some temper flair, but not any thing to worry about. It's more of an annoyance for her sister than anything and at this point I think she just accepts that it's just the way she is
My tortie has loved every cat she’s met, including multiple kittens. Our newest/youngest cat from the distribution system is her new bestie and has helped the new cat be less of a jerk. Some torties have it in em, some don’t! Just depends on how they like to be the center of attention
My tortie acts sweet then chaotic five minutes later
