TIL 12 desert lions living on the coast in Namibia are the only known lions to hunt marine prey (seals, cormorants, & flamingos). The average home range of a desert lion is around 12,000 sq km (4,600 sq mi), whereas, the typical home range of a lion on the Serengeti is around 100 sq km (39 sq mi).

No tuna on the coast of Namibia, I guess.

Not enough kelp there to construct a breathing apparatus

i guess the gir lions only chill by the coast and dont hunt any marine prey then?

    parent

I don't think there really are any seals in India. I am not sure what marine prey there really is to hunt.

    Misguided missionaries probably

Looks like that small population eats mostly wild boar and Indian antelope. Although if we are considering cormorants as marine prey, I find it hard to believe gir lions dont eat any marine prey.

Are they roaming 4000 miles up and down the coast ??? It is only 977 miles

    Plus four miles inland

It depends on how you measure it ... As it turns out these sea lions have very dainty feet.

Reminds me of Kodiak brown bears, which mainly eats salmon off the Alaska coast and have grown to immense sizes. Their the largest bear on earth.

I am confused why it would kill 40 seals in one night. I thought lions didn't usually hunt when they were full.

I've read somewhere that animals can also show psychopathic and sadistic traits
Not sure if thats whats going on here tho

    parent root
    1 points SamtheCossack

They can for sure, but most lions seem to get lazy and take a nap once they have eaten a lot, which presumably they would after the first seal.

I suppose maybe if they weren't hungry when they started killing seals they might keep doing it.

So the now endemic population of rabies off the coast of South Africa in their seal population could maybe even spread to lions elsewhere on the continent if the conditions were just right…

I posted the TIL about Mikey Burnett and they took my post down and are blocking me from posting on here? I have no idea why

    parent
    2 points geofowl66

    Because Mikey was anti lions.

You should probably stop making this comment in every TIL posting before they just ban you entirely.
