During the Game Awards, there was an announcement of a game from “Developers of Apex Legends and Titanfall”.
This, combined with a large amount of community generated hype, got a lot of fans very excited. And then it was revealed to be highguard (not exciting).
In half life, they had just community hyped up a HL3 announcement for the Game Awards (not entirely baselessly I believe, unlike us at TF|2, but I’m not entirely sure. Not quite plugged into HL2), but there was no HL3 announcement at the Game Awards.
For both communities, having been forced to wait this long for any news relating to their games, being disappointed again is highly unpleasant and unwanted. Thusly, they are now replicating the actions of Ace Combat 7’s subreddit. AC7 had a long phase of ritualistic posting and play, in accordance with the belief that it would lead to a long awaited AC8, with many of their rituals coincidentally coinciding with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the Game Awards, AC8 was announced.
So, as a combination of wanted to lash out and wanting the success that AC7’s community has enjoyed, both TF|2’s subreddit and HL2’s subreddit has begun to employ ritual posting to a mass degree. When outrage falls and people begin to return to a standard, it is likely that either ritual posting will take over the entirety of their respective subreddit’s, or this short phase will simply be forgotten rapidly as it is ground under the marches of time.
