That's how I got my dog. Except it was not a child. It was my wife, but it was basically the same conversation.

if that dog was a stray, then it must at least have been raised by humans. strays wouldn’t „act“ like that

    parent

Lots of community strays out there. (People are good about fixing them though, so I think the number is declining quickly)

I would hope that dog doesn't look like that whilst someone is 'caring' for it, that fur alone is a huge sign of neglect if so, the mom should probably check for a chip to make sure its owners haven't been missing it for months or something.

    parent root

    parent
    57 points deviantskater

It happened to me, only I never said it to my mom. I befriended a very very shy stray dog, he was abused and abandoned and I gave him food and eventually played with him and kept him company during my freetime back in elementary school. My parents used our friendship to let the animal care catch him and rehome him. I begged for weeks to let me adopt him. They refused. I was devastated, but never asked again. The doggo found a new home very soon and I believe he was loved as much as he deserved.

Two or three years later we got a dog. She turned 10 this year. I love her, but sometimes I still get sad over the fact that it could have been my stray friend instead.

This has to be the 1st thing about dog ownership. My younger sister wanted a dog but never wanted to clean up the poop, anyways we had a dog as part of our family for close to 6 years with me cleaning up the yard because my sister found cleaning dog poop disgusting lol.

    parent root
  • 13 points IameIion

I have no idea why animals just let children carry them. Same thing happens with my cats. My male cat doesn't like being picked up. But when my niece picks him up, he's just like "welp, here I go."

    parent
    8 points Positive_PandaPants

Same! Our cat hates everyone except me and the kids. I’m the only one she actively seeks out.  She will hiss and spit & carryon like she’s about to commit murder and then one of the kids walks by and throws her over their shoulder, “It’s ok, Kitty. You’re okay”. Just wild. They know gentle babies.

What an odd thing to hope... If my dog got out and someone found them I hope they wouldn't try to keep him :/

    parent root
    24 points AcanthaMD

Hopefully your dog is chipped and they checked, but I’d rather some child lovingly carried them down the street then they get hit by a car. Also this kid wants a dog. 😂

    parent root
    12 points AlbinoLokier

    Than.

Then implies you want this dog and kid to walk down the street and get hit by a car, lmfao. 💀🤣

    parent root

    parent root
    -1 points speelmydrink

    English is a silly language.

    parent root
    2 points Eena-Rin

My dog is chipped and collared and almost never escapes.

I would be grateful if a child (or anyone) took him in and called me to retrieve him, or failing to get my number, post on the local Facebook group. That's what I do whenever I find a dog

Hoping the child then keeps the dog is wild, steps should be followed to find the owner first

    parent root
    3 points AcanthaMD

I’m sure they believe the child in thinking it’s a stray, that dog I think is behaving too calmly to be a stray. Likely one of the parents will check if the dog is owned and will talk to their daughter about it. But I really do admire the kid’s determination although I think the parents should be cautioning her or at least educating her about picking up random animals in case of parasites or aggression on behalf of the animal. I can’t say I’ve ever come across a stray dog in the U.K.

    parent root
    2 points gene100001

that dog I think is behaving too calmly to be a stray

I'm living in Istanbul and there are stray dogs everywhere. All the ones I've come across have surprisingly been super chill like this one. I think they don't go feral in the same way cats do because we've bred them to have an innate link with people. It's actually quite sad because they're all a bit lethargic and depressed due to not having the human link that we bred them to need.

So perhaps there's a chance it's a stray. However they should obviously do due diligence first and check for a chip etc.

    parent root
    3 points AcanthaMD

Agreed but I was just looking at the neighbourhood and the cars and thinking hmm doubt it looks like an area where they’d have strays

    parent root
    2 points alisnwonderland

I lived in Mexico and sadly there are tons of stray dogs everywhere as well, so giving them a home is a blessing, but yes I agree, finding a possible owner should be done first.

    parent root
    1 points alisnwonderland

Yeah you’re right and this is very important too, educating the child. Hopefully the parent attempted to find a possible owner, maybe I should add that to my initial comment since it’s such an odd thing to say lol At the end of the day I hope that dog went back home or found a forever home.

    parent root
    -1 points Eena-Rin

The parents seemed sensible and I'm sure the proper steps were taken. It's the commenter I replied to that I was talking to/about

I live in a fairly rural area of Australia, stray/escaped dogs aren't super common where I live, but it does happen from time to time

    parent root
    3 points T0Rtur3

See that's the difference. In many parts of the states, there are stray or just neglected dogs that run wild. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary to think it's stray, even if the dog is calm with being carried around. Of course they should still make attempts to find an owner, but i wouldn't bank on one stepping forward.

    parent root
    1 points The_High_and_The_Low

Those chips do jack shit, most of the times people get the chip and think it’s registered BUT NO! Tons of animals at shelters have dogs with chips but owners think once it’s in it automatically works like it’s some tech from 2300 that just magically tells your dog where it is. You have to register the chip and then pray to god that the company that’s providing the service for your dog tracking doesn’t suddenly go under.

Yeah it sounds nice and convenient but that’s unfortunately how the story goes when animals with chips are brought into shelters.

    parent root
    2 points AcanthaMD

Yes I’m always neurotic about my animals and their chips! Hopefully though this dog had some identification or the owners came looking

    parent root
  • 64 points Pookie109109

Damn you let your kid talk to you like that? Establish some boundaries.

    parent
    60 points MF-GOOSE

Bro honestly. These comments are kind of engaging talking about how cute she is and hoping she kept the dog. Like ok just let your kids walk all over you and then complain about how kids are entitled.

    parent root
    5 points BigNimbleyD

My first thought. If any child of mine talked to me like that they'd be kissing their TV, iPad, toys etc. Goodbye.

    parent root
    1 points MF-GOOSE

Yeah honestly. Its got to be pretty bad if the kid is literally carrying a stray dog home like its no big deal

    parent root
    27 points HandicapperGeneral

Absolutely cannot keep that dog. That girl is going to think she can have anything she wants for the rest of her life by smiling cutely and ignoring people when they say no

    parent root
    5 points OPIronman

Gosh, at last. I was going through the comments here hoping that someone would see the elephant in the room.

That kid got the arrogance, the confidence and is stubborn all at the same time.

"That's just a kid doing kid stuff, let her have what she wants; she is so cute!"

I'm not thinking that we can't talk about things before doing it, who knows, maybe you know what you are doing. I'm for conversation and logical arguments and considering someone else's perspective. That's how kids understand that communication is important, they will value logical arguments and words over emotionally-based choices. (They will feel respected). That's how you turn a kid into a mature adult for society. Having respect for someone's feelings, perspective and consideration is so good into making that person feel listened to and considered. And a lot of issues (not all) could have just been fixed with words in a mature and calm setting.

However, don't ever let kids just walk on you and have what they want just because. We don't need anymore of these people in society.

    parent root
    19 points RephofSky

People think it's cute now. Until she becomes an Amazon empress later on who kicks puppies and stuff and takes whatever she wants.
