Yeah I have a friend in the business who used to watch movies with a stopwatch to clock story beats and stuff. He would probably pick up on this if he saw high school musical
My gf and I were having this same discussion about the black/blue vs gold/white dress debacle. How did anyone ever discover such a divisive pic was so divisive
My cousin was only allowed to watch the Veggie Tales version of like, EVERYTHING as a child. His commentary on stuff now that he's free is layered as fuck lol
My full time job is cinematography for small projects in the past 10 years. This is the answer. Basic over the shoulder 180 degree rule dialog cut scene. If you tried hard enough you could find plenty that look the same or similar. This just happens to line up perfectly. The medium cut away that shows both subjects is meant to add environmental context, breathing room between the constant tight shots, and establish further tension, conflict, or connection between two characters....so it's definitely not a sign of "they knew" just because they both do it. Lastly, those shots aren't even the same perspective.
Well... it's well-synchronized in this social media clip, sure. But we also don't know if either or both of those clips were subtly tweaked or not to make them perfectly line-up. (The clips don't have sound, which would be a big tell). Between that and the fact that this is, as u/moocowsaymoo says, just a typical shot-reverse-shot, I seriously doubt this was an editor "deciding" to randomly line-up timing with a forgettably edited scene no one remembers from a movie that has seemingly no link to the project they're working on.
They might be written by the same writer, who follows a certain pattern for writing dialogue in two-shot scenes. As the commenter above said, this kind of shot is one of the most standardized ones in movies and TV for over a century, it's plausible that a few of them line up really well for a few seconds. If this were that significant, you can be guaranteed that someone would be suing over it.
My guess is that "They knew what they were doing" and Will's supposed to be gay but is kinda confused with how he feels because puberty + lack of guidance? i mean that could be why the undertones in this scene matches that of the romantic drama scene between Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
Stranger Things does this a lot, they did it with Star Wars too, the scene where Leia is grabbing a wall on Bespin and telling Luke that it was a set up. A thousand percent the creators knew, and it's pretty cool they manage it so well
I remember the star wars scene but I don't remember when it happened in Stranger Things, I think it was in the big government facility thing
I dont even watch Stranger Things, but what i do know about it is that it seems to be an 80s nostalgia trip thing, its easy enough to write it off as a reference
The way these kids aged and the way they still have their hair and clothes just creeps me out for some reason. Also maybe unpopular opinion, but I feel like they did not age well. Like they’re just ugly now lol
to be fair, they were initially cast because they look (for lack of a kinder term) a bit strange. the whole point was that they were a group of misfits, and casting kids other than the typical cute kid actors played into that.
How does someone even find this out
Probably someone who watched High School Musical one too many times and had that nagging feeling that something looked oddly familiar
And here I thought that watching High School Musical once, was watching it too many times.
You did. One too many
I never even watched it once and I feel like I've seen too much of it.
On the other hand, how could I know? Maybe I'd absolutely adore it.
I wouldn't, and I won't go a day of my life second-guessing that assumption, but, y'know, dialectical thinking is important.
Strangely familiar things
It makes me think of how bet on it matches really well to let it go from Frozen https://youtu.be/YzLNom8UVV4?si=DOeyDxv3VO4DTT6F
Go indoors. Open Tumblr. Stay there for ten years.
OP is probably an Editor

Lol exactly
That was my first question yes, you’re right though it’s dead on
Wills line there is literally “what about us” and seeing as hsm was on the inspo board for that scene it was an easy connection to make
It's just shot/reverse shot. It's like the most common way to film a conversation between two people
“Im getting some Boss Baby vibes out of this”, says man who has only ever watched Boss Baby
I mean if the 3-piece-diaper fits...
I read this in Alec Baldwin’s voice…
My cousin was only allowed to watch the Veggie Tales version of like, EVERYTHING as a child. His commentary on stuff now that he's free is layered as fuck lol

Thank you for taking the time to share that
this is literally just shot-reverse-shot. the cinematography is not nearly unique or distinct enough for this to be a theyknew
It's way too well synchronized, isn't it?
you could find clips that line up with this from a lot of other things, this is one of the most basic ways to film a conversation.
also, if it were intentional, wouldn't 0:11 be considerably more zoomed out to match?
Oh ya? Prove it.
i dont care enough
Bro chickened out
here is a clip from the big lebowski with the exact same shots and cinematography. i am an engineer and yet i spend my time doing this.
Bro High school musical copied Big Lebowski!!
Incredible. Everyone ought to be able to spend time proving a point. Well done
Fuuuuuuccccck 😂
Well, 0:11 is slightly off, because Mike is actually in love with Eleven. Get with it. /

you missed the entire point of the sub...
The HSM clip is edited as well. The singing doesn't match the video.
Hate to ruin the fun, but the High School Musical parts have been re-edited to match. Their lips don't match what they're singing in some shots

Yes, could be regular shot-reverse-shot on storyboard but the the length of each shot or beat though…
I think it’s more how well the timing matches up.
Also, the fact that the original idea for this scene was planned to be at a mini golf course, so it’d be a bit more plausible as a reference.
They knew what?

What episode /season was the stranger things from?
Considering they both look like they are in their mid to late 20s I am going to guess season 5
I have drunkenly watched all three films several times, and I still have no idea what i watched from hsm
not the point of they knew... and scene recreations are pretty common.
Ok sorry, I'll go back to posting generic penis jokes
I definitely see it, why are the comments so miserable.
OMG! A non-NSFW theyknew! A rare post in a sea of suspected genetilia.
Thank you for your appreciation.
High school musical 2 was part of the inspo board they tweeted a while back
Seems like some sexual tension goin on in the top scene
That's a stretch if I've ever seen one.
It’s not! It’s a direct reference with wills line “what about us” and high school musical being on the writers inspo board :)
I don't think that was on purpose it's a common technique. Also, for a montage, with the right amount of editing all scenes will look the same.
Which movies are these from?
One is stranger things, don’t know about the bottom one
Stranger Things does this a lot, they did it with Star Wars too, the scene where Leia is grabbing a wall on Bespin and telling Luke that it was a set up. A thousand percent the creators knew, and it's pretty cool they manage it so well

Wait… I thought this sub was only for posts of things that were obviously intended to be sexual in nature. 🤔
Everything is an algorithm now.
What's the other film? (Not HSM)
Stranger things
Doh! Thanks. Thought it looked familiar but haven't watched it in years
Haha, high school musical vibes hitting different now.
I dont even watch Stranger Things, but what i do know about it is that it seems to be an 80s nostalgia trip thing, its easy enough to write it off as a reference
People like you are ruining this sub.

Well, on the right one’s a woman and one’s a boy so it’s not the same (yeah besides that, I was just being a stupid wiseass.)
Oof.
HOW DID I GET 30 DOWNVOTES?! I CANT EVEN EXPLAIN SHIT TO PEOPLE NOW?!!
