So I've been considering getting tf2 for a while now, and when I finally decided to, I couldn't find it? I have steam but I'm on Mac and am low on storage anyways, and I can't find it anywhere on the Xbox One stores. And I have a switch but obviously that is not running TF2. So basically my only options is to get it on my Xbox One, but like I said I can't find it. Would it work if I ordered a physical version for Xbox?

  • I heard, that it's unavailable on newer Mac versions, since it doesn't read 32 bit programs anymore

But I'm not sure, since there was an update to make it 64 bit a while back

TF2 is 64 bit now but was never updated on Mac, in fact the Steam page doesn't even have requirements for Mac anymore as it's discontinued over there

only 64bit on windows for some reason

I think the newer 64 bit version utilizes vulkan for rendering, which isn't supported on Mac unlike OpenGL

TF2 used to work (poorly) on my old 2017 64-bit Intel iMac, but since Apple switched to ARM silicon for their macOS desktops it's not worked.

I think it's also due to the fact that TF2 on macOS was an OpenGL implementation and OpenGL is now deprecated. Apple have insisted that everyone use Metal ( Apple's "DirectX") for game development from now on.

Wait is Mac seriously still 32 bit?

No, TF2 on Mac seems to be

Specifically for Apple yes, as they haven't updated it from 32 bit and have discontinued it.

  • I dont think its available on Xbox man 💔

Just try to get it on your pc

Its available via the orange box if you get the physical disk or get a download code

I actually just looked and I found an Orange Box for Xbox 360, and Xbox one has backwards compatibility. The problem?

    It's $100 USD

The problem is, its never been updated and is not even the same game as modern tf2. Steam is the only way.

The Xbox version of TF2 never received any of the 18 years of updates TF2 got, and is essentially dead. You may be able to find a few players, but that's just about it. It's not worth a try. Unfortunately, as it stands (with nothing but a Mac and an Xbox), you currently have no way to play TF2.

    TF2 works on mac.

edit: i see it dose not. use wine.

wait what the hell? wasn't there a huge hype around the Mac update YEARS ago? wasn't the fact that the game works on Mac the whole reason we have earbuds as a currency now? what broke since then?

The Mac update was over 15 years ago. Earbuds haven't been a currency in years either, they're still shown on backpack.tf next to keys and ref but most traders nowadays don't use them as standard currency. Valve dropped support for MacOS last year for most of their games, seemingly due to there being an extra layer of effort behind maintaining it, which they probably figured wasn't worth it due to the relatively small Mac playerbase.

EDIT: just checked, found a thread from 11 years ago discussing why Earbuds no longer a currency - respectfully, where have you been in the past decade?

i never really did much trading when i was a kid and my usual pubbing group jumped to Overwatch in 2018. just started playing tf2 again in september

If you have any technical knowledge with Computers, you could always try changing your OS.

Not sure if that works on Mac or not, though.

Don't want to seem like a dick but reading OP's responses makes it seem unlikely.

The fact he made this post in the first place makes it seem unlikely

Valve stopped supporting the Xbox 360 version because, at the time, Microsoft had a policy that any update adding new content (IE maps, weapons, cosmetics) absolutely HAD to be paid DLC bundles, no exceptions. Valve said “fuck you” and left the Xbox 360 version to die.

Thank you, I don't get it lol

Maybe they want me to spend $100 on TF2?

The problem is that the console versions of TF2 are all extremely out of date (like, decades, they're straight up initial release version), your best course of action is probably a Windows VM or something on your Mac.

Not sure why downvoting is the mass response to "don't spend a hundred bucks on ancient crap" but here we are.

The xbox version of TF2 is wildy outdated, plus you probably won’t find a lobby for it.

Trust me, you do not want to spend $100+ on a version of a game thats outdated and limited, whereas there’s a free version with everything the playbase enjoys (for the most part). You have to get a PC, hell even a laptop can work.

  • The fact that modern Macs can’t run TF2 is both hilarious and tragic. Like damn, not a Microsoft dick rider but imagine not being able to run TF2. Ik, Ik, 32 and 64 bit and all that. Still crazy.

Macs have always been a pain. Blizzard games having dual compatibility was great back in the day. So your Mac friends could actually join in on a game for once.

Yeah, Mac needs to get their shit together. If Apple firmly renounced gaming that would be one thing, but so many of their new ads (especially for the iMac) feature gaming. That’s just misleading.

There was an ENTIRE update and trailer to announce the fact that TF2 had Mac support and it does NOT matter anymore

    not a Microsoft dick rider

You already became one by forgetting about Linux

Choosing the only OS you don’t either limit yourself on, or have to put work into getting it going to play games is not dick riding lmao

    Nope?

You just install and play, even games that don't support it natively just run through proton perfectly

    Nope?

You literally have to go out of your way to get Linux on your machine lmao. 98% of computers consumers buy have windows or MacOS.

You’re literally putting more effort in to play your games. Most people don’t want to do that

Fyi there are Easy to Install Linux Distro's that don't require extensive knowledge about it and you can install games relatively easy (except Kernel Level AntiCheat games ofc).

You literally have to go out of your way to get Linux on your machine

That was not the point, the point is about getting games to run

Also the current case is about replacing MacOS, so the guy will still have to go out of his way to get Windows either

  • I don’t think it works on Mac anymore unfortunately

  • Assuming you have an Apple Silicon Mac, the best way afaik to play TF2 on it without spending $1000+ is to get Parallel, install Windows then play.

Or you can look into Crossover, which is a paid software for emulating for playing Windows games on Mac.

Either way you'll have to pay, there is no free solution for now. r/macgaming is a good place to ask.

The real answer for Mac users

Not a Mac gamer, but op may have the option to put Linux on a VM and play TF2 that way. Idk if Parralels has some magic sauce that makes it better, but I'd assume TF2 on a Linux VM should be comparable to TF2 on a windows VM, minus windows lisence fees/watermarks.

Modern Macs can no longer virtualize x86 OSes, let alone GPU support, they are on arm64 now. Windows on Arm comes with x86 emulation out of the box and it's the easiest way. arm64 Linux technically can do the same but it requires heavy setup and many trial and errors. I doubt OP has the time and will to suffer.

I forgot that you couldn't virtualize an x86 OS from ARM. FEX was pretty easy to set up on my ARM Linux device, but it certainly was not an out-of-the-box experience. The lack of GPU support, however, would be a significant limitation. TF2 might "work" but it may not be enjoyable, and it would certainly take some effort to get there with this route.

    Wine broken on Mac?

Crossover is actually made by the people that make wine (codeweavers), so it's alright on Mac (if you pay).

But a lot of the magic sauce for windows games on Linux is in proton, which gave up on Mac support very early on. So Windows games on Mac is roughly on par with Windows games on Linux from 10 years ago: Wime is alright, but lacks that extra support.

Game Porting Toolkit has sparked a resurgence on this topic. I managed to play Monster Hunter World Iceborne on my 2021 M1 Pro MBP

  • Try a windows virtual computer. Then download it on steam. I don’t know if it will work, but it’s worth a shot.

  • My honest recommendation is to, over the course of probably a significant amount of time, stop using Apple products. This problem will rise elsewhere, and the brand gives you no real benefit. Everything Apple does can be done cheaper, faster, or more easily by other parties.

  • jarvis i need karma upload technological illiteracy to r/tf2

  • You need steam on pc. You can't play on a mac unless you rub windows or an older iOS.

  • Yeah, it will work if you buy it physically. However xbox version haven't received any updates since 2007-2008

  • You couldn’t figure out that Team Fortress 2 wasn’t available on Xbox One by yourself?

It was confusing, I've learned it is available for Xbox One through backwards compatibility

There’s nothing confusing about it. The modern build is available on steam and that’s it lol. Google or the game’s wiki page will tell you this instantly

  • It doesn't work on mac os, and console support has been done for yeaaaars. You need a windows or Linux computer. Mac gaming is shit

True. But I'm happy to report that gaming on a Mac is now a pretty good experience since Apple introduced Metal. The downside is the lack of ported games and the 2x or 3x cost of hardware. Um, other than that...

So not worth it is what you're saying

  • Do what I do for the years I’ve had a Mac, use GeForce now. You only get one hour at a time but you’re running tf2 smoothly with low space.

  • Not every game works on every device brother. It's only for Steam

  • Zero technology literacy

    Average mac user

  • That's odd. TF2 has support for MACOS

Not as of the x64 update, now you need either an old version of Mac or play through a virtual machine using windows

No it doesn't, not in many years

I don't use mac so I only assumed

  • mac support was dropped some time ago and the console ports are basically dead.

  • It runs on older Mac versions, I think from Catalina onwards since they stopped supporting 32 bit software. It’s also on Xbox 360 with the orange box but it’s the most barebones version with no cross play, tho people are still actively playing it

  • i did it on mac by using something called Bootcamp which made my mac run on windows so i could download it on steam

  • I hope its not some kind of sikc joke valve is planing to discontinue tf2

  • Bro just get a pc, you can get a great one for less than 1000 bucks

I have no interest in windows-only games besides tf2

I am not spending almost $1000 on tf2

You can get a computer that can run TF2 for under $300.

you can probably get a computer that runs TF2 for free if you know where to look tbh

  • It was oonly for the 360 I think and got discontinued anyways with servers shutting down, gotta play it on PC

    it was also on ps3

  • If the orange box for 360 works on newer consoles that’s a game everyone should have in the collection no matter what

  • just use a pc like

  • Step 1, buy a pc

Step 2, you must have a steam account

    Step 3, install tf2, IT'S FREE

    Step 4, enjoy :3

  • I play TF2 on Mac. I just run bootcamp which installs windows on a small partition of your hard drive. Might sound complicated if you aren’t familiar with computers but it’s free, very simple and I’ve racked up near 2000 hours in tf2 with my MacBook and love it. DM me if you need help and I can get you squared away.

Bootcamp is not available on Macs that come after 2020. Because they no longer run on Intel x86 arch. You cannot dualboot Windows on Mac anymore except using Parallel for VM. Even Microsoft acknowledges that being the best way to use Windows on modern Mac.

Well now I feel out of touch. Haha I didn’t know. I think I got my MAC very early 2020 right before quarantine so that would track…. This will absolutley be something I need to figure out for the next purchase.

  • TF2 can run on a cheap laptop

  • tf2 is only on steam, it is free but your can't talk to others like text and voice ingame, you gonna buy something with steam money aka in your steam wallet, where you use your credit card or debit card to buy some

  • spin 67 times and say pootis backwards after throwing up

  • It’s on Steam (pc/android laptop) only. For playstation you had to buy it, but the servers are closed/almost empty

  • i dont know

  • WHY IS IT NOT ON THE SWITCH

  • its non functional on xbox and doesnt work on mac afaik

  • Well I'm going to be direct.
on Mac the game is no longer playable because of the x64 update
on Xbox the only way you can get it is through the Orange Box which hasn't been updated since 2008
So either you get a potato PC to play TF2 or you don't.
Also you could've google this answer

  • The only real way to do this is to use Steam. Sorry.

  • this has to be ragebait

  • You give me 5$

  • tf2 is available on mac thanks to the x64 update, the only way to play it on xbox is through the orange box port and that version hasn’t been updated since like. 2009 and is significantly different to that of current tf2

  • use a virtual machine, mac can't run TF2

also no, don't get the orange box, that hasn't been updated in nearly 2 decades

  • The Orange Box version hasn't been updated for 18 years, unlike its Steam counterpart. And TF2 isn't natively supported on macOS since Apple discontinued support of any 32-bit programs, including TF2. While the game did receive a 64-bit update, it's only for windows and linux. Probably because Apple's graphics drivers, Metal, isn't compatible with Vulkan.

Given your current circumstance, I'd say Virtual Machines like Parallels to install Windows on it would help you play TF2 on your Mac. Or if you got the budget, buy a PC with either Windows or Linux, or buy a Steam Deck.

  • PC build time

  • Use Wine or equivalent on Mac to run Windows TF2.

  • Wait, i thought TF2 has a Mac port, buds and all that.

Do they still give out buds btw?

  • The answer to your dilemma is simple:

Get a PC and ascend to godhood as part of the glorious PC Master Race, you dirty console peasant. /s

  • You can (and I have) play natively it on apple silicone macs with whisky/sikarugir or a vm. For intel macs bootcamp or something.
Feel free to dm if you have questions

  • The orange box had an Xbox port but that is an outdated version of tf2

And if youre lucky check the requirements on steam for Mac tf2 then yours if it can potentially work

Edit: it doesnt work on Mac dammit

  • TF2 run at Windows and Linux, and require Steam.

Xbox version was discontinued because of small player base (game was never designed for console and that was visible at player count).

If you can run Linux or Windows at virtual mashine, that will work.

  • Go to steam there will be a yellow button and you will click on it and there will be two options yes or no and you will choose yes i have. After that you wait and you will have it in ur phone

  • you can use apps like crossover or parallels desktop to play windows games on ur mac

  • Geforce now I have a Mac and that's how I play it

  • The xbox version died a looong time ago. If you have an intel mac, not Apple cpu, you can install Windows or Linux side by side with mac os (I'd recommend linux as it is free where Windows is not). That is going to be the best option. If you have an Apple cpu, you will have to use some kind of compatibility layer, I don't know if any are free, or a streaming service.

Or, you can buy a PC. TF2 is easy to run. You can literally get something on ebay for $60 or maybe even free on craigslist if someone is giving away old pieces of junk that will run TF2

  • bro, I understand your point in some comments here, but it is NOT worth the TF2 xbox version, this version is totally old, there are very few players and is not the current TF2

The best choice you can make, unfortunately in your case, is changing your OS with another pc... there is no other way... Unfortunately, Mac users have limitations in this type of case

  • Your cooked unless u got a 360 then get the orange box

  • Chat is this ragebait /gen

  • the only way to play current tf2 is through PC. I think it's compatible with the most recent MacOS (?) but it's compatible with a wider variety of 64bit Windows OS.

the orange box release of tf2 is a way older version of the game. by today's standards it plays like a beta. the reason it's only $100 is because its obscurity is turning it into quite the collectors item.

    No mac since 64

I'm not surprised. Mac compatibility is such a PITA

    Linux has native support.

  • [deleted]

    I did.

That’s why I’m asking you to get Steam.

He just said he has it. Also TF2 isn't on mac

"I have steam but I'm on Mac and am low on storage anyways"

Then get more storage, man buy an SSD/solid state drive, or delete/uninstall stuff you dont need. tf2 is like under 30gbs. How much space do you have on your Mac for it be full to the brim 😭
