What version of Stop Making Sense do you prefer?

Deluxe Edition has been my go to recently. I generally enjoy the mixes better on it than the original. It’s also nice having Cities and Big Business/I Zimbra

They both have their strengths and weaknesses. The new mix has the cut tracks, but it also BUTCHERED Psycho Killer for no reason

    parent
    13 points raynicolette

Yeah, that was weird. The 2023 release reverted back to the 1984 CD mix of Psycho Killer, with a completely different drum track, and without the “I have a tape I want to play you.” introduction. I think that's the only place the 2023 release used the 1984 versions instead of the 1999 versions?

    10 points BimpoBill

Oh I had no idea that was how the original CD release had it! In that case, I think 1999 was definitely an improvement. Maybe Jerry Harrison/David Byrne changed their mind about the changes they made then?

Butchered once in a lifetime. What a day that was. I love Jerry but his remixes mixed out some things I really love

The one that says "Taking that god damn snow white, all night" during the Tom Tom Club section, can't find it anywhere

    parent
    6 points raynicolette

That was never released on audio (CD / LP / cassette / download), but as of the 2024 video release by A24, that's available. A rip of the 1985 laserdisc release is included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray / 4K, and that has the unedited cocaine reference.

    parent root
    1 points BirkoLad

I had it on CD back in the day when it was first released. Also had a VHS of the show which also had the line on it, same as the CD, so both had the line I mentioned (This was in the UK)

    parent root
    3 points raynicolette

The 1984 CD / cassette / LP release only had 9 tracks, and Genius Of Love wasn’t one of them. But yes, the 1984 VHS included Genius Of Love with that line, as did the 1985 laserdisc release. I'm saying the 1985 version is available again as of last year, on the new A24 home release. So if you want a copy, it's no longer hard to find!

    parent root
    1 points BirkoLad

I definitely had it on CD, maybe cassette back in the day with the line included

    parent root
    3 points raynicolette

If you can find any evidence of Genius Of Love on any official CD or cassette release prior to the 1999 special edition, I will owe you a beer!

Maybe you had a bootleg dub of the home video release?

    parent root
    1 points BirkoLad

I'm not sure tbh but I definitely had it, I rang my brother and he remembers it as well

they left in the line, “we went insane when we did cocaine” but took that out. that’s odd.

    Yep

For a shallow reason: I like the original big suit cover much more, so I only want to listen to the one with the “right” cover

    parent
  • 4 points monsieurtino

Deluxe Edition has a Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music which to me is wildly different to the "normal" mix you’d find on YouTube or elsewhere, but I like it a lot more

If it’s between the original 1984 release and the new Deluxe Edition, the Deluxe Edition wins because at least the whole concert’s there and in the right order. The Special New Edition’s just the film soundtrack, but while I’d prefer it, I’ve never really listened to it because what’s the point when I’ve got the film?

As a casual fan, which version should I enjoy the most?

    The polka one.

The original. The newer remasters or ALL albums are inferior to the originals (on Spotify at least)

  • 2 points ritualsequence

I can't listen to either, because they both replace the spectacular live drums on Take Me to the River with a drum machine 😭

    parent
    1 points Last_Meaning_9786

    They do??

    1 points dharma_dude

Having listened to the 1999, 2023 album versions and then comparing to the film versions (both the 2023 release and the 1985 laserdisc) I think what you're hearing is just overdubbing on the drum track to make them a bit more clear over the other instruments. To my ear both sound the same (film & album).

I do know they called Chris the "human drum machine" because he keeps such good time, which is probably why it sounds so consistent as well.

If you know definitively they swapped it for a drum machine I'd love to know though!

I like this one I bought last year. It has two cds and a bluray audio with every song from the movie. Of course, I also have the bluray of the movie to compliment it.

I also have the original album (with 9 tracks) and the Special Edition cd from 1999 (with 16 tracks). I also have the cassette, but it's a bit worn out.

It's from Rhino Records. It had two standard cds with all the songs from the movie, plus a bluray audio of the entire soundtrack.

    I like the A24 version

  • 3 points imbogerrard39

I just wish the soundtrack sounded exactly like the concert recording, but unfortunately they did a lot of overdubs, especially in regards to the drums.

A good example is Girlfriend is Better. Listen to the intro to it on the CD version and then watch the film, it's really different.

I Really like the bootleg 5.1 downmix taken from the UK Second Sight bluray from a few years back. It feels like the least amount of dubbing in there, only shame is the patchy quality of the cut songs due to the nature of the source at the time

I prefer how the songs sound in the movie as opposed to the record, so for that reason I prefer the “special edition” over the new version.

The original. Can’t fork out money for the deluxe

Someone on here one time linked the a24 4k bluray downmixed version, and that's my favorite to listen to.

    parent
  • 1 points vaporgirl1976

I strongly dislike the remix on the A24 version. Takes a lot of punch from the percussion.
