Rewatching these songs on YouTube and I noticed that for Cities, Bernie worrell isn't present but Alex Wier is. If I remember correctly they both arrive on stage for Burning Down the House. So did they cut these songs for continuity?

  • Because they didn’t flow as well as the movie does without them.

  • If you get your hands on the new A24 home video release of this, it has the original movie, and also 2 versions of the movie with those songs included. So you can see that they had all the footage necessary to keep the original continuity, and also see exactly how they edited those songs out. They leave in Alex's “introduction”, but then cut Cities so it looks like he comes out for Burning Down The House.

So yeah, it was an artistic choice. And much as I love as much SMS material as possible, I think it's the right one. If I was trying to hook a new fan by showing them this movie, I'd never start with the longer cut.

Big business I Zimbra is my favorite track from SMS. I'd totally start with it 🫣

  • Probably had to get under a certain running time for the movie, so something had to be cut.

  • Don’t have the answer to this but it is so interesting. Cities and big business are in my top 5 from SMS, the baselines are so groovy

  • The VHS included them, and my copy of the album was a tape I made after renting it, so it’s weird to me when they’re not there.
