I have always made my own.. i find packet taco seasoning bland.
1 tsp black pepper
1 tbs smoked salt
1 tbs dried onion
1 tbs garlic powder
1 tbs oregano
3 tbs smoked paprika
1 tbs ancho chili powder
1 tbs hatch chili flakes
1 tbs poblano chili powder
1 tbs guajillo chili powder
1 tbs cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp achiote powder
1 tsp sumac powder
The smoked salt and smoked paprika are highly recommended. Achiote and sumac aren't typically found in regular stores and can be left out... but they do have a function, achiote is nutty and smokey, and sumac brings a lemony flavor. They add depth.
Even better is to use whole dried chilis soaked in boiling water for a few minutes, then chopped up into pepper paste and split between the meat and the beans.
I make my own, but I know what you mean. Ortega brings back good memories and was really my introduction to making real Mexican food.
My mom would brown a pound of gr beef, drain it, add Ortega seasoning, a cup of water and a can of refried beans. I still make that once in a while and it still tastes great.
I'm having the exact same thing tonight, but I use taco bell brand bottled sauce too just to REALLY show these traditionalists what tacos were meant to be.
No specific recipe, we use black pepper, onion powder, chipotle powder mostly. Might add some salt, personally I dont like garlic so I dont usually use that, but sometimes other pepper powders like cayenne (or red pepper flakes), maybe a little chili powder, or habanero powder mix if I'm feeling spicy.
Basically I would just experiment with what you have and see what you like best.
Lawry’s Taco Seasoning is a good one, but it’s definitely better to make your own, try some powders; hatch chili, ancho, there are so many and you’ll find what makes you happy.
Chicken/beef/ shrimp bullion powder depending on what mood of protein you're in
And the beauty of it all is, i can control the sodium amount. It tells you on the back of the package how its made so you dont need to buy it pre made 😉
I make my own, and I am mostly vegetarian/vegan, so we don't have a lot of ground beef taco meat made in the house. But my husband says, other than making your own, Ortega.
If only because of universal availability, McCormick is among the best. Just use chicken broth instead of water according to the directions, and add cumin to taste. Enjoy!
Salt, Pepper, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Mexican Oregano and a pinch of Cumin. Everything equal parts except the salt (use half) and the cumin (a little goes a long way)
I don't like taco bell fast food but I actually like the taco bell seasoning packet they sell in the grocery stores.
Same.

Thank you for this generous post🙏🏾
Trader Joe’s
For ground beef gringo tacos it's always Ortega for me, that's what my family used growing up and it hits nostalgia for me in a way few things do.
This is the only acceptable use for store bought taco seasoning.
I make my own, but I know what you mean. Ortega brings back good memories and was really my introduction to making real Mexican food.

The best taco seasoning is no taco seasoning, marinate the meat with onions, garlic, cilantro and grill it.
Grilled ground beef?
Fuck no, if it is ground beef call it something else but not a taco.
I was being facetious, point being, when I think "taco seasoning" I think gringo tacos. Which have their place too.
I’m having ground beef tacos tonight.
Suck it.
Don’t forget the lettuce
im gonna put pre shredded mild cheddar cheese on those B's too. Probably dab some sour cream and Ortega taco sauce just to really rub it in. mmmm
I'm having the exact same thing tonight, but I use taco bell brand bottled sauce too just to REALLY show these traditionalists what tacos were meant to be.
A fellow person of culture, I see. Taco Bell fire sauce slaps. Sometimes I mix it up with some Franks Red Hot or store bought guacamole salsa. 👌
Dammit, now I'm horny
No need to be strict on what goes in a taco anymore than you need to be strict on what goes in a sandwich.
Whaco
Picadillo absolutely is a taco filling
This is the way
This is also the way.
We don't really use seasoning packets, just mix our own seasoning.
Recipe? Might be helpful for someone looking for good seasoning mixes
The art of the eyeball 🤣

We use Tone's. We buy a giant canister of it from Sam's amd season liberally whatever meat we put in taco shells; usually ground turkey. Turkacos.
McCormick’s Hot Taco is my go to.
Homemade seasoning blends. Mix ur own spices and make sure u marinate the meat. Also, don’t forget to use salt!
We've settled on the Chi Chi's "green" packet for several years now. It's a little different, with stronger herb and salt flavors vs. just spice/heat.
This is my go-to now. It's incredible! I add in a can of green chile enchilada sauce and it makes it even better!
For something quick, we always have this on hand. https://www.amazon.com/Meat-Church-BBQ/dp/B01DJ886TQ
Goes well on beef, pork, and chicken.
Kinder's Taco Seasoning has been life changing. I use it on chicken non-stop these days, for all meals not just tacos.
An old roommate randomly left some of this in my kitchen, and I love it

I make my own
Chili powder
Cumin
Paprika
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Cayenne/black pepper
Oregano
Chicken/beef/ shrimp bullion powder depending on what mood of protein you're in

I usually pick the one with the least amount of salt. McCormick is good. They have cheaper ones but it's usually just a ton of salt.

Been using this stuff for ground beef tacos for years.
Lawyr’s taco seasoning!

Mateo’s is our favorite
Lawreys
For what type of taco? I’ll assume that you are asking for a ground beef taco. Do a YiuTube search for ‘picadillo’ tacos.
If you like it spicyish, the Original Cholula branded seasoning is extremely flavorful. Kinda makes the beef taste like chorizo.

Store bought I'd probably go with Goya Adobo
No need for one.
Use some pepper, salt and garlic.
Just throw it together the way you want it. Takes two minutes
Salt and pepper
WTF?!?!? Lol
Marinate your meat If you’re grilling. I always use salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and a warm beer and let it sit for a few hrs.
For hamburger salt & pepper, onion, garlic, tomato…
All depends on the flavor profile that you’re going for.
Salt and pepper
what in the white??
It’s a packet of premixed seasonings commonly used with a protein that would make its way into a tortilla of your choosing.
