Middle of the road prices for things you get at Colesworth but better quality. Rapidly becomes better when you buy in bulk. Also pretty great for a nice but but bank account ruining MB4
I go there mainly for large cuts like brisket that are hard to get at a supermarket. Butchers often have them but you have to rely on what they grab from out the back and I like to pick my own piece.
My favourite Sausages are from Colins Butchery at East Village, but they are not cheap!
Funny story; I was having a bbq there there the other week. I had some snags leftover in freezer from Christmas and a big whole oyster blade from meat emporium (about $45) which was going to feed about 7.
14 people turned up. I had to run down the local woolies to grab 4 tiny porterhouse steaks ($46). I never buy meat at colesworth.
Put then both on the bbq. I was shocked with the quality difference. The woolies ones looked like turkey steaks. Barely browned. No flavour. Honestly gross. Don't know how people do it.
Even if they break even on price (I have no idea how they actually compare, I've only bought a couple steaks from there), you can be absolutely sure they're infinitely higher quality. Go check the amount of posts online about Coles and Woolies from people suspecting they sell meat glue steaks. For the record, they probably don't, but their meat is so bad/badly handled during processing that it looks like they do.
Like Costco, it's not necessarily the price that I go for, it's the selection. They got some interesting things, like dry aged beef, rabbit, etc. The fact that they're at a competitive price is worth a visit.
Rabbit you say? That is very interesting. Is it there often? Imported or local?
Our local butcher sometimes has whole rabbit but it's so damn expensive. I'm keen to give it a go for a ragu, but not at over $100 a throw for vermin I've never cooked and may screw up.
I saw it in the freezer section past the main warehouse. Price is reasonable. Not sure about the provenance, but Australia isn't exactly lacking in the little buggers.
Thanks. Not a member but there's a few things I bulk buy from Amazon that are constantly ending on cheap subscriptions. So I may get it for bulk items like TP, cleaning supplies and whatever food is a bonus.
I know emporium well, never seen rabbit there but I'll drop them an email. Ta.
Amazon, anything non perishable, all cleaning products in bulk (then decanter to smaller), multi packs of dishwasher tablets, washing powder, was doing paper towel but now use WGAC... Anything we can store really. You need to keep an eye on them that the value is worth it, but it's generally as low as half price on Amazon (with free delivery) or cheaper than normal Woolworths. So fuck going there every week sweating on a 30-50% "sale" on a staple.
Harris farm will often have whole pork TL on sale or in the reduced to clear because it's about to go off section, so depending on how you shop it might be worth taking a look if you're near one anyway
Absolutely. Definitely one of those things that even if I don't need anything right now, I'll check the reduced section even if I'm not doing groceries. Sometimes you get crazy lucky and you can still just chuck it in the freezer if you won't be having it that night. My local used to sometimes get non-prepackaged chicken feet in and nobody would buy them so I'd get like 1kg for $2 and make a huge broth with them.
It's a pain that too many people have cottoned onto it (edit: reduced to clear area) at my local one. I used to buy and freeze a heap of specials.
The meat specials are great too. Getting a chunk of sirloin or beef fillet and doing a few dishes with it is great. I stopped buying supermarket meat many years ago... when the slow march of their in-house branding took hold.
I mean you’re not going for price, you’re going for quality. So it really depends on what you’re after.
If you want just run of the mill snags and mince for midweek dinners, you can go to Colesworth. If you want a good steak or a niche piece of meat, go to AME or any other butcher.
If you’re not finding them cheaper, then the AME meat will be infinitely higher quality for the same price
I only buy my meat from AME and sometimes my mum brings over some ColesWorth meats bless her and the side by side visual comparison is night and day before even talking about the texture and flavour differences
They’re not cheaper generally but better if you’re looking for particular cuts of meat or want to buy a range of things. They have some affordable wagyu cuts and their pork is less horrible than Colesworth. And it’s the best place to hang out if it’s 30+ degrees.
I’m no expert but they’re definitely not cheaper. I only drop by if I’m in the area but I do like getting the cheap odd cuts like intercostals, flanks and spider steaks.
First up they are definitely better for quality. Colesworth steaks, even the 'good' ones that look nice, never seem to cook particularly well which is a problem I never have with Meat Emporium. If you find whatever cut is on special as single steaks you'll usually get a decent price, as good if not better than Colesworth.
The real saving comes when you get a side and have them cut it to size. Again if you focus on one of the cuts on special you'll get an excellent deal, often $10 or under for a really big thick steak. You can have them vac packed as well.
I've never quite gotten what the butchers are able to do. You're saying I can buy a 10kg side of beef and ask them to cut and vac seal it into 40 250g portions? That would be amazing

I really don't like their sausages.

Dont get the meatballs from Colins Butchery.
Why’s that? I recently bought the beef patties. Thought it smelt a bit off. But wondered if it was the herbs in it
I've not tried the patties, but would assume it is the same mix. For me there is not enough seasoning.
Funny, mum randomly brought up Colins yesterday as he used to have a shop in Illawong and said "he's probably up to charging $9 a sausage now"
Not far off, $29.99/kg !
So almost double the price of Meat Emporium or "gourmet" supermarket sausages. But it's hard to go back to them.

There's so much liquid injected into Coles/Woolies meat that trying to cook them in a pan ends up closer to a stew.
What liquid? That doesn't sound very likely.
Salt water. It's common in the supermarkets and some butchers.
I'm pretty sure they'd have to say if it's added - it shouldn't be added to normal meat.
Better quality and selection than colesworth. Also basically one stop shop for anything meat related which is convenient.
They do an oyster blade wagyu which for some reason is only like 25 dollars a kilo
Oyster blade is a cheap cut because of the line of gristle down the middle
Extremely easy to butcher it out yourself though. My favourite stir-fry cut
Yes but the Wagyu Oster is better than any rib eye and it's half the price

Oh I wasn't referring to Costco, I was referring to the Emporium. You don't need a membership to shop at the Emporium.
As for bulk buying on Amazon, which items would you recommend?
I know emporium well, never seen rabbit there but I'll drop them an email. Ta.

Thanks for the heads up.
Hoo boy, if you have a couple hours to burn, may I introduce you to the dishwasher guy?

Check out the wholesalers in sydney meat market. Found it cheaper than meat emporium
I mainly go there to get cuts that colesworth dont stock eg pork tenderloin (which BTW is cheap and excellent with a little sous vide)
Harris farm will often have whole pork TL on sale or in the reduced to clear because it's about to go off section, so depending on how you shop it might be worth taking a look if you're near one anyway
Harris farm meat specials are 🔥

I will never not buy 2kg of marinaded wings when they're 5.99 a kilo.
The lemon and oregano one absolutely rocks
Harris farm and aldi often stock pork tenderloin

Dollar for Dollar, possibly not but you're not buying trash like at colesworth.
Bang for buck, quality wise, is much better.
I've only ever gone there to cool off on blistering hot days.
... "Sir, can you please stop doing snow angels with the whole briskets".

The only thing I get there are whole rumps which I break down myself. I use my local butchers for everything else
I’m no expert but they’re definitely not cheaper. I only drop by if I’m in the area but I do like getting the cheap odd cuts like intercostals, flanks and spider steaks.
Spider steaks? There can’t be a lot of meat on them?
In seriousness though what are they? I’ve not heard of them.
First up they are definitely better for quality. Colesworth steaks, even the 'good' ones that look nice, never seem to cook particularly well which is a problem I never have with Meat Emporium. How do they compare to Pendle Hill Meat Market?
Yes.
