My 12 yo daughter loves this podcast but there’s only so many she can listen to, without you know, thinking the world is awful. I still haven’t gotten through the past episodes, thought I would ask this group what episodes are ok for kids? Similar to the McDonald’s Monopoly?
Maybe just try another podcast … scamfluencers maybe? Topics are lighter but are still about scams
One great thing about Swindled though is the production style. I think I tried Scamfluencers before, but the production style is completely different.
I can’t think of any similarly produced shows that would be appropriate for an all ages audience. Nexpo and Nick Crowley over on YouTube produce similar content in a similar style, but would be even worse for an all ages crowd.
It’s been a while since I listened, but maybe Balloon Boy?
There are a few episodes in the earlier seasons that are a bit lighter than others. The Lucky Winner, The Imposter, The Fyre Festival, The Contestant… lots of options tbh.
Edit: second-guessed Canoe Man so I took it off.
Crazy to me that people's kids would listen to this podcast lol. This is not like Agatha Christie, these stories are real and there are many episodes with very extreme content.
I would not let a child listen to this podcast lol
Chameleon has a couple of series about con queens. Definitely different but PG.
avoid the swindled about the whales and maybe the duck boats. Still having nightmares about those, as a grownup!
Maybe try the podcast Criminal. Similar that it’s about crimes and sometimes scams, excellent production value, & straightforwardness, but not as extreme topics.
It's not a lot like Swindled but kids seem to enjoy the Judge John Hodgman podcast... The cases are very low stakes and the podcast is super family friendly.
Great thank you!
Yes, I would also steer my child away from swindled until they're a little older, and Criminal is a great alternative. It's similar in journalistic and narrative style, but a little more uplifting
I think sometimes you just have to accept not everything’s for kids. (And I’m saying this as someone who was allowed free-reign to watch whatever I wanted at that age)
Not appropriate for a 12 year old.
I think you could do so much worse than Swindled in the universe of podcasts. If your child is intelligent, I think this could be a great way to introduce (or reinforce) critical thinking skills. I do think you should talk about it together afterwards, though. (When my kids were really little, far younger than yours, they didn’t understand satire at all, LOL, and I’m so glad I realized that.) I suggest the one about the treasurer/show horse swindler (second episode, maybe?). No violence as I recall, the whistleblower is treated with respect, and it’s a mild intro to the cynicism that’s heavy and inescapable in some episodes (which is fault of the swindlers, not ACC).
