Hi everyone,
My wife got into a fender bender. The person in front hesitated at a yellow and stopped mid-intersection. So, we are waiting to hear back from our adjuster and there seems to be a hold up. Just curious if anyone has a ball park of what this may cost? We full coverage auto but we are curious if they will total the car. It has about 60k miles and we’ve had since ‘18. It’s been a previous accident too.

Almost certainly totaled on paper. But probably not a terribly bad repair, especially since the bags didn't go off.
Hilarious that this somehow became the driver in fronts fault though. lol.

Umm, op?
"The driver hesitated..." Not "My wife was tailgating and not paying attention..."
Edit: It's the implication.
At least a 50% chance they total it. Depends how deep the damage is up front.
Hmmm. I think I see the issue. There is a ford in your hood. Would recommend removal for optimal performance.
More importantly, hope everyone involved was ok, materials are replaceable, health isn’t. It’s impossible to tell from pictures if totalled or not, but good luck op.
You owe me one Snarkmeter.
My wife was ok. A bit shaken up!
I’m pleased that she is OK and that no one else is hurt.
Glad to hear your wife is ok! 😊
Dang you are on point with your car ID! That Ford call looks good👍
Yeah, appears to be an escape.
That's ironic 🤣 it aint escaping now.
Indeed. 💀
C-max
This is correct, my apologies.
I'm guessing it'll cost whenever your deductible is
Hope your wife is ok, that's all that matters. The hesitation is likely because she is at fault.
It doesn't matter what the driver in front of you does. If you hit them you are at fault. If they backed into you, then you better have a dash cam to prove it.
That's a bit more than a bent fender.
I'm surprised EyeSight didn't slam on the brakes in that situation. That's part of the reason why I wanted a Subaru, to help avoid situations like that.
Hopefully she's OK.
She got the most basic package on that car, so it doesn’t have the sensors….at least I’m pretty sure. And thanks! She’s a bit shaken up, but she is 100%
Hesitated a yellow and stopped mid intersection? Why are you passing blame to the ford? The Subaru driver should have been stopping anyway if the light was yellow and had cars in front of them still.
i don't think I understand this. Yellow doesn't mean stop. So if the person in front hadn't stopped the Subaru would have been in the wrong for driving through a yellow?
it also doesnt mean go...if you can't reasonably expect the clear the intersection before it turns red it does mean stop.
Yellow means slow down and prepare to stop, if you have car(s) in front of you and it’s already yellow, you should be stopping. It depends on the speed limit (and intersection length) of the road on how long the yellow light stays on but multiple cars should not be going through a yellow light.
Did the airbags go off?
I’d personally call that totaled, but I’m not the appraiser. There’s a lot of damaged parts, the radiator will need replacing and the mounts won’t line up so it’ll require frame work, and that’s assuming the engine is undamaged.
They did not go off thankfully!
Do you have it back yet?
at minimum two fenders, a hood, a bumper, headlights, a radiator, a paint job ..that's not cheap.
Depends a lot on your state - states have different rules for when a car must be totaled by an insurer. For example in Florida it's when repairs are greater than 80% of current value, in New York it's 75%, in Texas and Colorado it's 100%, and in a bunch of states it's whether the cost of repairs + salvage value exceeds current value.
Also depends, of course, on what was actually damaged and needs to be replaced as determined after the mechanic gets everything apart to look at it.
That's what a 10-11k car? I had a very minor scuff/scratch that required a rear doorskin, rear bumper cover, paint and sensor recalibrations and it was $8k+ all in...take that for what it's worth.
Ima guess at least three fifty
It’s weird that you and your wife are blaming the person in front for her rear ending them. If she would have been following at a safe distance it never would have happened.
Nice hood ornament
In road colonoscopy. Kinky.
Any airbag deployment?
If so, mor likely to be totaled
Day early for front end Friday. On a more serious note, glad to see that the both of you are okay. Property can be replaced, lives can't be.
You can't park there sir.

2020 base model Impreza… A Ford F-150 with a giant trailer hitch backed up into it while it was parked. This cost AAA $7800 to fix. I was shocked. Thankfully, I didn’t pay a dime. And luckily, very low miles for its age so it still has a lot of value. I would’ve been so upset if it was totaled. I wouldn’t think a previous accident would affect the value if you got it repaired. Glad your wife is OK. Hopefully the car can be fixed. Imprezas are good little cars. If it is totaled, you can always do the repair out of pocket and get a salvaged and then rebuilt title too.
more dramatic dents than mine but similar damage...mine was door skin, tire gunk on rim, 2" tall scuff on the metal bits front and rear of the tire and a bumper skin...i was at $8500
No way of telling until insurance company gets the quote back. No point in digging further. Could be an $800 fix, could be totaled.
You can't even paint a bumper for $800. This car is very likely totaled.
Regardless, Reddit users are not insurance appraisers, so nothing anyone says here carries much value for OP.
Correct. I bought a totaled impreza with less damage than this. I’m sure it is.
Bumper cover alone is $1000. Guessing at least $7,000 in damages depending on what they do with the door. Guessing AC condenser and radiator are both done. If she bent the strut tower they may total it. Doesn’t look like the airbags deployed so there is a chance…
Hopefully not but it looks to me like rad support may be cuddling the engine.
Dealt with that before. Chopped the front end of one and welded it on my salvage title. No bueno.
lol...I think my body guy charges $800 to look at a paintgun.
Totaled. Especially considering previous accident.
Ooohh..a rear end under ride collision.
Impreza vs S’impreza
My 2019 Impreza was in a similar accident. Quote original was 3k in damages. Got transfered to another location and it was billed for $9k.
I looked up a rough value of your car not knowing what you specifically have. A 17' impreza with 60k miles is worth between 9700-12700 according to KBB. Assuming that you'll need a new bumper, fenders, hood, head lights, and assuming a radiator? That alone is looking at close to $2000 not including labor (which will most likely be the same as part costs).
There could also be frame damage which could be fixed at a cost or beyond repair. Most insurance companies will total the vehicle if the repair cost equals about half of the value of the car.
I had an accident in my 2016 mustang and they ended up totaling it because costs exceeded half the value and that was valued at $22000 and our damage looks similar.

That is probably done.
Base model 2017 Impreza with 60K miles...and borrowed 2018 or newer alloys. Your mileage is way below average but that car was barely $20K new. I'd be surprised if they didn't total it. If it was paid off at least you'll get some money to go shopping. It's crazy how much nicer the 2024-present Impreza is than the previous generation. Even a new base model has significant upgrades in tech and safety functions (good chance Eyesight would have prevented this accident). Good luck!
You really should pull from the front of the car if it needs a tow. Pushing it never works out good for anyone. 🤣
On a serious note, I am glad to hear that your wife is ok and nothing critical. I hope they can fix your wife's Subie back to new and not write it off 🥺
I’ve been in a similar accident with an Impreza that was 7 years old at the time, only 50k miles. It looked similar in terms of damage though. Car was a total loss. This will probably be as well from what I see here.
Imprezas are low to the ground, but not low enough.
Lmao how close was your wife following that him hesitating on a yellow ended up with his car on her hood because id hardly call that mid intersection from the photo.
My Outback has similar damage (passenger side only) due to hitting a jeep. Just got the estimate - around 5k.
This is your friendly reminder to GET A DASH CAM.
Yes, you reading this message. Get a dash cam and use it.
EDIT: I am not sure what any of the responses below this have to do with getting a dash cam. Protect yourself and get a dash cam. And you shouldn't be driving like clowns anyways.
EDIT2: Because apparently it needs to be said: The only folks below arguing against getting a dash cam are ones either admitting to driving like clowns or fail to understand the importance of a dash cam. Get the dash cam and protect yourself. It is better to be able to point to video proof than rely on "they said, they said". The only people who I could possibly see arguing against it probably shouldn't have a license in the first place.
Dash cam would have proven in high definition that OP's wife was driving while inattentive and following too closely. Doesn't matter if the car ahead stopped for a yellow light. She rear ended the Ford.
A dashcam would have only proved that OP's wife was at fault
But in this case, the Ford may have been an idiot driver but OPs wife is at fault, last minute hesitant or not. The Ford is nowhere near mid intersection either and there is possible assumption it’s only at its resting spot due to being hit from behind. This could have been avoided by giving additional space.
Yep I agree with you 100%, Subaru car and OP wife fault. This could be prevented. OP defend wife and blame other car.
Because dash cam makes no difference in this PARTICULAR case.
1) The person in the front car may be 100 times not attentive or hesitant whether to cross a street on yellow or not.
2) The person in the front car may have fainted and suddenly stopped.
3) Notwithstanding the above, you wife should be ensuring the proper distance between their car and the car in front of it, at all times, and take appropriate actions, that is apply hard brake or accelerate, or maneuver.
The driver who is in the behind car is guilty in 99.9% cases and no dash cam can change it, unless the front driver is backing/reversing unexpectedly.
Assume for a second OP is telling the truth, a dash cam WILL help them.
Regardless, a dash cam is ALWAYS useful in an accident as you NEVER want to rely on witness testimony when you can simply show the video.
I hope none of you ever get into an accident. Yikes.
What truth?
Front driver did not back into the OP's wife's one.
Front driver's hesitancy does not.make.them at fault.
At the same time OP's wife's failure to monitor the road situation properly cannot be fixed by dash cam.
I've had someone cut me off (double lane, school bus turning left, I'm in the right lane. Car behind the school bus decided they didn't want to wait, decided to merge into my lane).
Fortunately for me, a cop was there and they got ticketed, which made it easier for me to get the repair to my suspension and tire fixed when I had to hop a sidewalk to avoid rear ending them. Believe me or not, the point is irrelevant, what matters is if a cop hadn't been there in this scenario and I had a dash cam, I could still use the footage to prove I was not at fault.
A dash cam does nothing if the driver isn't paying attention and (like I said, driving like a clown). That is a wholly UNRELATED point to getting a dash cam. Which is what you and everyone below are arguing. Completely unrelated.
Get the dash cam and protect yourself.
to document her phone use, or her excessive speed? or were you talking to the ford guy?

Sounds like you were too close to the f150 if you couldn't stop. Even though you're a bad driver, you shouldn't hate yourself.
