This is what a nest can look like when pigeons don’t have to worry about scavenging for food, navigating bird-proofed cities for cosy spots, or watching for predators. They have built such a lovely home for their plastic eggs.
I started with one (the blue-gray one) because she was abandoned in my hometown. I got her a mate because she was lonely when I worked (full time, on sits). I’d come home to grab something midday and she’d coo for me, begging me to stay. Broke my heart! I can tell she’s psychologically fulfilled now. They’re lovely to have around, but they’re very dusty & poopy.
They have their own room which has plastic sheeting over the carpet. Everything in there is easy wipe and okay to be pooped on. I wipe up the little poos 1-2 times a day and do a deep clean 1-2x a week. I let them explore the apartment supervised sometimes & they thankfully stick to the tile.
Only if it’s one. I worked on a farm that had outdoor homing pigeons gifted to them and they were sooooo messy and useless. They were cool but not at all needed imo
To be fair, I think most pets could probably be said to be messy and useless. My cats are definitely messy and don't exactly contribute to the household. But they're pets, we keep them because we love them and their presence makes us happy. They don't need to do anything else; their existence is enough.
These weren’t indoor pets. They were outdoor homing pigeons gifted to a hobby farm but the owners didn’t like them. They really just were there for the wow factor and for getting poop on everything. Not sure why I got so many downvotes lmfao
Yeah, it's a bit like r/oneorangebraincell . The oranges are so dumb. They are just ridiculously dumb. But their humans adore them regardless of how little brainpower they bring to the task. The oranges don't need to be smart. The pigeons don't need to be good at nests. They're perfect just as they are and they bring us great joy with their antics.
(Personally I find it even more delightful the more seriously the pigeons are taking it. They try so hard! They're doing their best! I love them.)
I know, it makes no sense that people would downvote someone disparaging something they love! I'm going to go tell r/knitting that fiddling around with yarn is a pointless waste of time, that's sure to get a positive reception.
Its like walking into a bar and shouting alcohol sucks! It doesnt make sense really because the people in the bar dont really agree with you. And its not about being a victim but maybe dont walk into the bar? If you dont like alcohol there are plenty of groups who don't either, and theyll share your opinion but not at the bar.
Do you ever get nervous about the plastic choking them? Or is it easy to make sure the pieces can't be swallowed or wrapped around their neck? I haven't seen anything like this before, so I'm just curious
The plastic ring is a bendy plastic and isn’t a closed loop. Funnily enough, they removed it from their nest after a day.
The zip tie is a flexible plastic that functions like a twig. It’s not looped, just a straight line.
I don’t worry about them swallowing any of the nesting materials, but I do worry about them swallowing beads from my crafting as they’re seed size. Gotta be extra careful and tidy when they go on tour of the apartment.
If a young baby fell from a local barn & needed rearing, I would see if they could foster parent. I don’t think I could accommodate a third pigeon long term, though.
We had a little hut/house for our pigeons, but we took it away after they had coccidia 🙁 just got to be too much of a poop mess too quickly and we're afraid of it just being an environment that would keep perpetuating it. Too much $ to keep getting their poop tested and giving them medicine lol.
They made eggs, but it’s not ethical to breed more when so many are suffering on the streets or are in adoption centers waiting for homes. They’d make 24 babies a year! So, I replace the eggs before the embryos develop.
"His and Her feathers" reads like "His and Hers towels" so that's how I'm choosing to interpret it
Before reading your comment I didn't realize that that wasn't what OP meant
What other way is it? I only think of towels
His feathers and her feathers. As in where they came from
Oh it's literal! Lol
I once saw a nest that was made mostly of feathers
He’s just showing off at this point!
He’s been single for 5+ years, making up for lost time!
I recommend cutting the plastic ring or removing it if you can't. It can entangle and cause pain and death.
It’s a bendy plastic ring that’s not a complete loop. Funnily enough, they took it into their nest & then dragged it out the next day!
Thanks for being concerned for them.
Oh good to hear!
It looks like one of the ones you peel off a lid, in which case it is cut.
I've seen some that aren't cut, so it's good to be sure.
Not in the US.
mansion indeed omfg. i love these absolute beebs.
The plastic fern is the best part. Fancy pibbin!
Pigeon equivalent of a beachside villa
What's it like owning pigeons? I always thought of getting one. I love them so much.

Adore. I’m going to pretend that’s their names, Dusty and Poopy 🥰
How do you handle their poop? Do they just poop everywhere?

I've had parrots and chickens and helped temporarily look over a friend's pigeon! Birds are awesome! Hundred percent recommend.

Do you assess all your relations in terms of usefulness?
Sounds like how my mom talks about her kids… mom is that you?

Because you said that animals that the subreddit loves are messy and useless, perhaps?
I don't think most people understand that we like pigeons, but we find the creativity of their nest building to be quite hilarious.
Had a fellow ask how to hunt geese on r/geese. He was not well received.

God forbid someone has a different opinion than others on the internet!

I just recommended that this person not get too many pigeons. These people had 20+ pigeons gifted and they kept laying. It’s not that deep holy shit
They have a beautiful house
“This is not my beautiful house “
🎶“This is not my beautiful wife”🎶
Those are some talented bread loaves.
Sooo cute!
Awww look at them, they’re so cute and proud!
The whole plastic fern just being included makes this so much funnier, it’s like bringing a whole tree into your bed 🤣

Since you’re curious about safety: I bundled all of the window blinds’ cords in socks so there’d be no accidental entanglement.
That's a really good idea! Thank you for sharing that tip

That’s actually so adorable 😭😭
God I love them so much
They're so cute
What a gentleman
Pidgelings incoming!!
I’m not allowing breeding as there are surplus domestic pigeons needing homes & so many ferals suffering on the streets. They love their fake eggs 🤎
Oh that makes sense, cute parents regardless 🥰
Understandable if not but would you ever consider giving them a chick to adopt? They just look so cute

Awww they kissin
They're so CUTE my God
I just love knowing that I'm not the only one that calls a pigeon a "pidge" lol
I lost it at zip tie lol
They love zip ties, and the foil colored twist ties too XD
That is actually really impressive. Good job 👏🏼
If he wanted to he would
What's on his eye ? Is it like pigeon glaucoma ?

Are you talking about the blue-gray one? She’s healthy, it was just a reflection.
Aaaah okay good to know ! Very cute
Wow, she’s stunning!
This looks decent actually

These two are so good at not pooping in the nest. Their nesting poops are so big & stinkyyyyyy
Why plastic eggs, though?
They couldn't make any?

Trash bird building nest with trash. Seems accurate enough.
