Santa was delayed around here by a few days this year because of the flu. But dang if it wasn't worth the wait! This was totally unexpected and I can't wait to dive in and see what this one is all about. Ozuku asagi suita. Hardness 5 Fineness 5.
Ugh the jnat bug has got it's hooks in me unfortunately. I have way more than I could ever need. This is my first large suita though so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I hope it turns out to be a good finisher. What type of hone do you prefer using?
Synthetics. Suehiro or Chosera or Kuromaku for major steel removal when needed, Chosera 1k or Naniwa Superstone 1k for officially setting the bevel or else 15µ lapping film, then a progression of either SuperStones or more often 9, 3, and 1µ lapping film, then a post finish on lapped and backed balsa lightly treated with 0.5, 0.25 and finally 0.1µ diamond paste, rubbed in good, and surface wiped very clean. I don't want a bunch of microscopic boulders rolling around under my bevel. My whiskers are punishment enough. The 0.1µ is also my post-shave edge preservation treatment and then pre-shave I strop on my DIY compressed and glass burnished cowhide strop or else my treasured Kanoyama horse shell. I like a sharp razor that is sharp all the time, not just after I hone it. In fact with my post shave treatment I never have to actually hone the same razor twice, just once, when it first joins my rotation. I did try a Jnat once and I got an okay edge from it. A guy I knew who was really good with a Jnat improved upon my edge, but it was still not the equal of my usual regimen. I ended up selling it on fleabay.
Sorry for the wall of text but you did pull my string.
Hey everyone has their preferences. I use synthetics for bevel set up to 8k. I have Chosera, Kuromaku and Super Stones. I finished my Hart on a Kuromaku 12k yesterday. I can't finish that razor with any of my natural stones or I end up with micro chips in the edge. I can't go as sharp as the microfilm. That tends to irritate my skin a little.
Excuse phone typing, not home. There is a definite sour spot for most people, at sub micron grits, but when I get down to .1 micron it suddenly feels very smooth again if shaving with a very low angle. At half or quarter micron most say the edge is sort of harsh and unkind. 12k superstone is slightly more coarse than one micron.
I do have one linen strop with .25 micron diamond spray on it that I will occasionally use as a quick touch up on a razor that is beginning to tug. Two passes in each direction usually suffices. That rarely happens though because I enjoy honing too much. I have a drawer full of Gold Dollars and Zy razors just for the purpose of scratching that itch. I'd say that I hone or sharpen something at least four days out of the week and whether it needs it or not 😂
I am NOT a Jnat fanboy but that is quite an impressive rock. I love the real estate and the nice rectangular shape. Enjoy. Make Santa proud.

Oh that looks like a nice large one too! I hope you like the edges you get off it!
Me too. I'll enjoy using it no matter where it falls into the progression. This is the first Ozuku hon suita I've ever seen.
Beautiful stone! I hope it performs well for you!
Thank you much! Even if it turns out to be a prefinisher I'm going to enjoy it. I imagine it's going to be a fast stone since it's a suita.
