NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Nashville Metro Council voted Thursday night to approve a resolution to help with the backlog of sexual assault kits.

The resolution asks for an application for a DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program Grant.

Following its approval, the Metro Nashville Police Department will apply for the $250,000 grant through the U. S. Department of Justice.

The Metro Council resolution says the money would help outsource sexual assault kits to private vendors for forensic sample analysis to reduce the backlog.
