Wtf dude I never knew this. I mean I can imagine not playing certain songs immediately after because it might be a bit tasteless. How long did this take? Or are they still banned?
It was because of song titles and the lyrics that were inappropriate in the post-9/11 atmosphere. Like songs titled "boom" or "burning the house" by talking heads.
Merely a few months later in 2002, Eminem’s “Without Me” had the lyrics “The FCC won’t let me be, or let me be me, so let me see. They tried to shut me down on MTV…” It was such a timely lyric in that context.
It wasn’t like a hard ban, I think some stations owned by Clear Channel (now iHeart) still played some of the songs on the list and never got in trouble. I think it was only in effect for like a year or something. Definitely in the immediate aftermath.
Jet pilot was misinterpreted along with chop suey, which was the much more “controversial” song, which was released as a single in August 2001. Unfortunate timing
Napster brought me from being unable to buy music because I was 12, to being able to start downloading music before school and having 10 new songs by the time I got home. It was literally life changing.
this is why you make a real music library that you own and don’t let your streaming service do it for you. it takes time but you won’t be bound to shit recommendations or worry about losing your media.
Definition of dad rock is changing with the younger generation. To them Alice In Chains, sound garden, bush, Metallica are all ‘dad rock’ anything pre like 2000’s they claim is
I don't like nu metal that much but not gonna shit on it because I know what it's like to be a fan of an embarassing/critically reviled music genre (in my case hair metal)
I remember when Trent Reznor said the scratching in Nu Metal was stupid and it was the current day equivalent of the overblown pointless guitar solo of the 80s. Well, now Nu metal bands are on the has been stages playing to balding goatee'd dads and Trent is polishing his Oscar's for best soundtrack.
My friend and I formed a little band of our own wearing Shout At The Devil-era Motley Crue makeup/outfits in 1984 (well we tried). Cringe as hell, but still laugh whenever I look back at those days
This is why bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes were such a breath of fresh air in the early 00’s. That said, I’ve went back and listened to early Korn and Deftones this year and there was some good stuff to be found here and there.
Agreed. Especially System of a Down and Korn. I’ll usually go on a couple hour listening spree about once every year or 2 and just have a huge smile on my face remembering all those songs.
Find it kinda funny that the guitar shown is neither a Ibanez or ESP. Its Jackson Misha Mansoor signature model which wouldn't have existed yet idk if he was even playing guitar at that point lol

John Otto take 'em to the Mathew's Bridge
My g-g- generation!
Wes Boreland shredding
DJ Lethal! Bring it on! (Insane scratches beats and shredding come together perfectly )
Can you feel it?
Boom boom ba da boom
First thing that popped in my head as soon as I saw the title.
Trump culturally appropriated the red fitted cap from him don't you know.
I DID IT ALL FOR THE NOOKIE
"It's just one of those days"

Genuinely curious, which songs were banned after 9/11 and why?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_Channel_memorandum
Wtf dude I never knew this. I mean I can imagine not playing certain songs immediately after because it might be a bit tasteless. How long did this take? Or are they still banned?
They're not banned anymore lmao.
It was because of song titles and the lyrics that were inappropriate in the post-9/11 atmosphere. Like songs titled "boom" or "burning the house" by talking heads.
Oh and ofc the Pyromania cover-

(it's an album but still)
I remember Best Buy at one point pulled movies with exploding buildings on the covers, like Die Hard.
Lmao amazing
Post 9/11 censorship was concerning at the time. People were also hesitant about publicly criticizing the Bush administration.
Merely a few months later in 2002, Eminem’s “Without Me” had the lyrics “The FCC won’t let me be, or let me be me, so let me see. They tried to shut me down on MTV…” It was such a timely lyric in that context.
Republicans OG Cancel culture warriors.
Dixie Chicks and French Fries.
Remember ‘freedom fries’?
It wasn’t like a hard ban, I think some stations owned by Clear Channel (now iHeart) still played some of the songs on the list and never got in trouble. I think it was only in effect for like a year or something. Definitely in the immediate aftermath.
Bro we lost so many freedoms after 9/11.
We still have a fucking 9/11 charge when we buy plane tickets. Its crazy
I think about how far we used to get on a US drivers license…
Fk Al Qaeda.
I'm not exactly a fan of al qaeda, but the blame for these repressive policies rests squarely on the american government.
"Rage Against The Machine : ALL songs"
System of a Down had some issues when they released toxicity. especially the song jet pilot. Love them but that song was not a great look
What was wrong with the song?
Jet pilot was misinterpreted along with chop suey, which was the much more “controversial” song, which was released as a single in August 2001. Unfortunate timing
Chop Suey was originally titled "Suicide", if I remember correctly. Not a bad name change.
Fuck MTV, I ain't afraid to say it
That boy band shit THATS GAY
Imma say it… IMMA SAY IT… FUCK YOUUUUU
WHEN YOU CRAWL OUT OF MY BRAIN
With all the "every X song ever" parodies, this one still impresses me with how accurate it is
BAWITDABA DABANG DABANG DIGGY DIGGY DIGGY
God I hated the radio music of that era. I realize music streaming has many issues but at least we’re not stuck with a certain sound for years.
We're stuck with trap music since 2015. Some of it is good though but atp it is an overdone sound.
(Stuff that sounds like Drake, Future, 21 Savage, Travis Scott etc. etc. Very hi-hat driven)
The difference is now it’s cheaper and easier to go find something else. Napster was terrible on a dial-up connection.
This fucking lobotomized shit and wearing baggy jeans with no underwear and smelling like cigarettes and wet dog.
I see you have shit taste. Dad rock is in
I think nu-metal is post-dad rock.
Like everything from late 1960s to grunge was dad rock as far as I know.
Definition of dad rock is changing with the younger generation. To them Alice In Chains, sound garden, bush, Metallica are all ‘dad rock’ anything pre like 2000’s they claim is
Dude I heard 2000s MCR and Green Day on a classic rock station.
God help us
Speaking of god, I hope that someone from MAGA administration doesn't force them to play Stryper or shit.
Right- when I was a kid, dad rock was Led Zeppelin
By Dad Rock I think he means Nickleback and Creed. Not necessarily music from a certain timeline.
Nu metal isn’t dad rock it’s embarassing 20 something rock
I don't like nu metal that much but not gonna shit on it because I know what it's like to be a fan of an embarassing/critically reviled music genre (in my case hair metal)
hair metal men were wearing make-up and skirts with high heels. That is never gonna be cool. They were phenomenal singers though.
Those embarrassing 20 something's are dads now
Early-mid 90’s I liked
But I disgress...
It was ok types.
At least we got linkin park and evanescence. Can’t think of much else though. Not sure if deftones were NU metal adjacent
Ok I don’t care about the down doots but can someone tell me what’s wrong with what I said
LB, Korn, system, slipknot, godsmack, mudvayne, rob zombie, drowning pool, 3 days grace, breaking Benjamin, SEVENDUST, incubus, the list goes on
"Denial" goes hard.
I saw Ozzfest in '99. All bands were solid performers. Slipknot blew my eardrums off for the week to follow.
You’re 100% right I just didn’t really think of all of them in that category. Thank you
yes, but were they good. You just listed all the bands of that era. If they are cool, then the sound wasn't corny.
I listed the nu-metal or adjacent bands that I liked because they could only recall lp and evanescence
Was probably featured in an edgy 2000s movie like The Matrix, Daredevil or Dracula 2000
Or in multiple pay per views for WWE back in the late 90s and early 2000s
I remember when Trent Reznor said the scratching in Nu Metal was stupid and it was the current day equivalent of the overblown pointless guitar solo of the 80s. Well, now Nu metal bands are on the has been stages playing to balding goatee'd dads and Trent is polishing his Oscar's for best soundtrack.
Whitest music I ever heard......
Some friend of mine went to see Limp Bizkit and Deftones last year and surprisingly enough, the crowd was filled with younger people.
Even on Spotify, LB have 21M listeners and Deftones 17M. All of them can't be bald and goatee dads.
Deftones are actually great musicians, beyond the genre of nu metal
The bottom half of this picture resembles Metallica from Load until St. Anger.
That was the late 90s for ya.

PRS guitar.
Going in a Mesa/Boogie
I hate everything about this starter pack 😭
Unpopular opinion but goatees look far better than full beards on some ppl.
Yea some people can pull off the Gordon Freeman really well
I thought I was so cool then, lol!
Own your embarassing past lmao.
My friend and I formed a little band of our own wearing Shout At The Devil-era Motley Crue makeup/outfits in 1984 (well we tried). Cringe as hell, but still laugh whenever I look back at those days
You forgot the tribal tats and chain wallets.
Guitar nerd here to say that’s ACKSHUALLY a Jackson HT7 Misha Mansoor sig, not an Ibanez/ESP 🤓
immediately noticed that too lmfao
Other Things to Note:
-Bald bassists
-Rarely any guitar solos
-May have been featured in a Tony Hawk game
-May have pivoted into a different genre
Add questionable morals and low IQ to the pack.
Tbf, every popular musician has had questionable morals at some point in their career.
This is why bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes were such a breath of fresh air in the early 00’s. That said, I’ve went back and listened to early Korn and Deftones this year and there was some good stuff to be found here and there.
Linkin Park
I was a card carrying (literally) member of the LP UNDERGROUND. It was a fan club that sent you a picture that’s signed and a T-shirt lol.
It was always Ibanez. There was no competition in the 7 string department back then.
This is what actually killed alternative.
ngl I'm kinda nostalgic for this stuff
where else are you gonna hear chuggy down-tuned guitar riffs, lyrics that may or may not be rapped, and a load of angst in one package?
Agreed. Especially System of a Down and Korn. I’ll usually go on a couple hour listening spree about once every year or 2 and just have a huge smile on my face remembering all those songs.
For me, it's early Linkin Park and some Disturbed. Some of their songs still hold up, especially the former's.
This perfect parody of this kind of music
"Shootin' my jizzy jizzum, the woody has rizzy risen"-ahh music.
Shirtless fat guy on bass
Can't forget the fred durst-style whiny "yeAHH" singing. They love talking about "rolling with the masses" too.
Idk take me back. I was in middle to high school at its peak. I still like it as a late 30s-40ish old.
Needs more stretched earlobes
Lmao. That's deathcore imo.
😭 the nuances were always tricky to me even back then
forgot to include meth
Never trust a man who still has one of those beards.
Saliva
Dysfunctional Family Picnic yo
And in 2025 one of them got #metoo'd and became an alt-right podcaster, another drove off a bridge in 2008,and another one is a corporate jingle maker
Find it kinda funny that the guitar shown is neither a Ibanez or ESP. Its Jackson Misha Mansoor signature model which wouldn't have existed yet idk if he was even playing guitar at that point lol
lemme guess… the bloodhound gang
“Ibanez/esp 7 string” and the image is a Jackson juggernaut
i love it
Hell yeah brother
Worst type of metal imo
one of my friends always said that Nü metal is Pü metal
Buttrock 🤘
hell yeah
Nowadays are MAGA
Nice i just had to see the death of several hundred people in my top left, thank you so much.
Should not have put that image thinking about it now.
