Yeast are fungi, which is what a mushroom is. They can reproduce both asexually (bacteria method) and sexually. They only sexually reproduce when nutrients are limited.

I personally don't eat them often due to sensory issues, but the one I tolerate the most is home grown oyster mushrooms (raw only)
Those the ones you can grow out of old books? I did that once with a kit I got.
Try a nice firm porcini if they grow near you. I have trouble with mushroom texture too and that's my favorite.
