So I know we have all kind of gotten used to the new dress code and it’s not that big of a deal but something that didn’t dawn on me until just now is that all of the little things we would do to make the holiday season be a little bit better and a little more fun for us and the customers is dressing up for Christmas/the holidays. Before the new dress code (at my store specifically) we would always wear work appropriate pajamas on Christmas Eve and anyone who worked on Christmas would wear an ugly Christmas sweater and we would have an ugly Christmas sweater competition.

It was always so fun and the customers always loved seeing us in our pajamas or our Christmas sweaters and we’d always get compliments and told it was nice to see people having fun while working on Christmas. But with the new dress code, we can’t do that anymore. One of my regulars who always participated in our ugly Christmas sweater tradition every year just came in and asked if I was excited about Christmas and to tell him what my sweater was going to be this year and I had to tell him that we are not allowed to wear Christmas sweaters or any thing other than our uniform on Christmas and he was heartbroken. He was actually upset that the tradition that we have had for the last eight years that I’ve been at that store will no longer be a thing all because corporate won’t allow us to have any fun with our outfits.

I don’t understand why we were allowed to dress up for Halloween but then dressing up for Christmas isn’t allowed.

  • Our district did Holiday Spirit Week, every day this week has an assigned theme. Yesterday was ugly sweater day and today was pajama day. Unfortunately even though our DM approved it, he just put out a messaging today saying we can no longer celebrate spirit week and starting tomorrow we have to be back in dress code. So sad :( We were all having so much fun dressing up these past 2 days…it felt less corporate and more authentic and really got us into the holiday spirit.

Any coffee shop that truly wants to be a “third place”would encourage Christmas Eve PJs and ugly sweaters Christmas Day. Brian Burrito plainly doesn’t understand.

I’m so sorry. That’s awful that they would approve and then just switch it up on yall. The really know how to ruin our morale.

it 100% ruined morale. to many it may seem pretty dumb to get upset over not being able to dress up but this was something that was supposed to make the holidays better for us as employees working for a company that does not care about us. and everyone was so into it, it felt like being a little kid again in elementary school right before christmas break. i’m sooo sad and our DM has not told us what the reasoning is at all. and as far as i know, no stores have had problems with inappropriate attire during these 2 days. back to being corporate robots ig…

Yeah my RN made and good and sure we all knew that the dress code still applied for the holidays with 0 exceptions. It’s fine. Just understand that it’s because the company knows they are lost and that they will lose. They are just holding the line as long as they can.

Yesss this is what we did for every launch! Twin Day, Sports Day, Pajama Day.. etc..

  • I got little antler headbands for my closing baristas and my DM approved it. It’s not spirit week, but it’s something!

Yeah we got approved for headgear but a lot of partners at my store (including me) have sensory issues/sensitivities so we can’t wear the hats and head bands.

Not trying to be rude, genuinely curious. How is a headband any different than wearing a headset?

Its having to wear both, for me. Also I can't wear headbands because I wear glasses so the area over/behind my ears is occupied by my glasses arms. They're usually too tight and they often flop around and just generally PMO while I'm working lol I might wear a hat instead

too much stuff behind my ears it gives me a headache 😔

  • Thank the soulless pos of a CEO (Brian N) that they hired on. Starbucks will never be the same thanks to him and his billions of dollars a year salary, private jet and outsourcing warm and caring partners to India instead of paying partners in the U.S…..he just keeps filling up his own pockets while Starbucks gets worse and worse.

  • You know by now that corporate wants to suck the soul out of of everything when they should suck a …

I’m so glad I left two weeks ago. The company was already going downhill but burrito boy finished it off. I’m sorry they are doing this to yall):

  • We don't do launch week outfits anymore either.. :(

Right!?? We used to make it a HUGE thing and now it’s just boring af.

I miss having spirit weeks :(

  • we're all dressed like santa rn at my store

  • 2021-2023,,we wore ridiculous sparkly deely boppers and headdresses for Christmas, some of them with battery powered LED lights. It’s hard to be cranky when faced with them!

  • Is corporate going to be at your store? I would just do it. I always broke dress code for my team on days like Christmas Eve and Christmas and didn't care because the kill joys who set the dumb dress code would never be there on a holiday anyway. Come at me bro 😂

Because someone will always snitch and as a SM I would get in major trouble if I allowed that knowing it’s a non negotiable, even if I hate it, I still need my paycheck lol

  • We’re doing Christmas pjs so that’s so sad to hear

  • New dress code is ruining EVERYTHING. It’s awful. I don’t care if they keep ignoring me, I’m gonna keep plugging my petition til I’m blue in the face.

  • Our dm said we can wear PJs on Christmas day

  • Unfortunately too many pushed the boundaries, now look what happened

  • What establishment do you ever see ppl wearing pyjamas. As a customer I think that is hella gross.

And as a barista, I think you’re a sad and uptight individual with no Christmas spirit

Plenty of coffee shops and bookstores and restaurants where I live have fun holiday/spirit week themes. I work at chick fil an and my location has spirit weeks all throughout the year. Lots of establishments do them. I’m sorry your boring af and why would me wearing plaid pajama pants and a shirt with a Santa on it be any different from wearing jeans and a black shirt? It’s clothes. Not like we’re wearing lingerie or boxers

why does it matter what people even wear?. are they serving you properly? are you still getting what you came in for? yes? ok then. what’s the issue? there are restaurants that literally let their employees wear bikinis, short shorts and tank tops, silly campy retro server outfits, etc. why do you people give a fuck about something that doesn’t even affect you at all in the slightest?

Yes!!!!! Thank you!!!!! Couldn't agree more.

And why would it be gross? Everyone in my store that wears pajamas for Christmas Eve usually goes out and buys a brand new pair for work so they are Christmas themed. Even if they weren't buying new ones they still are no different than a work uniform that we wear and sweat in all day and then put through the laundry. We have to wear pants and a shirt to work what does it matter if it's cute ones that you would normally wear to sleep and comfortable versus a pair of jeans and a black T-shirt that we would normally wear to work? Make it make sense to me. Not to mention Starbucks provided each partner with two free shirts and a lot of people can't afford to go buy several more so they wear the same two shirts all week while working and I doubt they do laundry multiple times a week so the pajamas are probably cleaner than the shirts they normally wear on every other day.

    Found the Grinch’s Reddit account.

  • One of my coworkers made her black shirt a crop top while she was doing drains the other day, which shows people will abuse the system so we all get punished no matter what it is

I think this is just pointing out that changing the dress code does nothing to address this behavior and so we should’ve kept the dress code the same

YES exactly! Literally people will find a way to be flashy, inappropriate or skimpy … not one to clothes shame but if you’re at work, roll your fckin shirt down!

When you work in retail you have to find the joy in anything so yeah it’s ruining morale and to the point no one wants to work the holiday anymore. Customers are also bummed. You don’t realize what those little things do for people especially on the holidays. Not everyone gets to celebrate with friends and family.
