For the love of God, just tell me, what are those crunch bits that I get while drinking javachip frappuchino?? Like I am totally done searching for them lol
They’re just chocolate chunks. Not even very good quality ones. You can get basically the same by buying a bag of chocolate chunks at the store. You can’t buy ours but they really are just average chocolate chips. They aren’t even legally considered chocolate, they’re labeled as chocolatey pieces on the package if I recall correctly
Edit: and the pieces on the top and bottom are just crushed chocolate cookies, again, you can’t buy ours at the store but you can buy chocolate cookies and smash em with a rolling pin.
I remember being a barista when Starbucks had to change the name of the double chocolate chip Frappuccino, the non-coffee version of the Java chip Frappuccino, to double chocolatey chip Frappuccino in order to satisfy advertisement or marketing regulations or whatever.
Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me! There are laws around the labeling of chocolate, it has to have a certain amount of cocoa solids to be legally labeled as chocolate. If anyone ever sees anything labeled as “chocolatey”, that means it doesn’t qualify!
Idk what agency regulates that, probably the FDA, but it’s the same thing with cheese where it has to have a certain amount of milk solids and fat to be called cheese vs “cheese product”.
Yes this was exactly it. Not enough chocolate to call it chocolate (at least in the USA, that is). I don’t remember what talking points we were given for when customers asked about the change, but they sure did ask and it made for an awkward exchange. Not sure if it’s still a popular drink this days—it was a staple menu item back then. Edit: autocorrects
The double chocolatey chip isn’t even on the menu anymore as of earlier this year. They cut several of the fraps including the majority of the crème ones, we only kept vanilla bean, strawberry, and matcha. If anyone wants one of the “creme equivalent of the regular fraps” we have to custom build it.
Ah, that’s right. I’m not a Frappuccino drinker myself but yes I remember reading about that in this sub. Now if only I could figure out why iced americanos are always watery these days!
My educated guess is 10% chance machine needs maintenance and is pulling bad shots, 90% chance it’s a newer barista (it’s the holidays, we get a lot of new faces in) who is forgetting the extra shot.
Life hack for that, if you’re mobile ordering: go into the drink, change the shot size (so, say, triple to quad) save it to your cart, change it back, the triple modifier should stay on the label. I think. I haven’t actually done any testing on this but I see it happen on mobiles sometimes so I assume that’s what’s happening, since it does that on the registers too.
Yeah, they do. I have done that before, just not in a while, I kinda forgot. I don’t think that difference helps in narrowing down OPs request though. But I agree, they’re definitely different than normal chocolate chips and not just because they’re not real chocolate.
Thank you so much for replying first of all, secondly, I tried adding choco chunks to my drink like good dark quality ones but they don't really float in my drink they just sink at the bottom, what's with that my good barista sensei?
Do you mean at home? Are you adding any sort of stabilizer to your homemade fraps? Ours have a stabilizer, there is xanthan gum in our frap base. That’s definitely required to get the same consistency. You can also buy that at most grocery stores in the baking section, it’s a powder. The tiniest amount (like half a teaspoon) should do you good when making drinks at home.
Um okay I've heard about the stabilizer thing but didn't really try it I'll make sure to do that next time, but one more thing, why do those chunks feel crunchy?? I mean that's the bit I love the most, my choco chips do NOT feel crunchy or crispy at all
Now that I couldn’t tell you, unfortunately. I just know that they’re big chunks, bigger and more solid than normal chocolate chips. I wish I had a recommendation for you!
I think it’s the cookie bits blended in that give them a slightly gritty texture. Also to note that the kind of “chocolate” they are made from is prone to solidifying significantly when cold. I suppose all chocolates do, but this is more of a waxy chocolate product than a milky, cocoa solid-flavored product. In this sense I think it’s intended to use a chocolate chip that’s less like actual chocolate and it’s not just to cut production or procurement costs.
I don’t know who told you that, but it sounds like one of those old barista tales like the “we can’t sell (edit: venti or larger) nitro bc caffeine” thing. Here is the list of ingredients for frap chips. No coffee.
I’m honestly impressed that you were able to pull this up so fast! Very impressive (not sarcasm). I stand corrected! Thank you for showing me this, it is indeed salt in there that adds that flavour. On a side note, I now understand why they aren’t gluten free.
We have a lot of people with various dietary and religious based restrictions that come through my store, so you know I keep that thang on me. (That thang being the Starbucks app to reference ingredients lists, hehe).
I love the app for that! I always tell people though I’m happy to help them, the app is a really good resource for dietary information! I did not know it went this specific though, that’s a very helpful bit of information!
Chocolate chips that have been chunked into tiny pieces. If you put regular chocolate chips into a food processor and hit pulse and let go and repeat a few times (go slow so the heat from the machine and friction don't melt the chocolate) you'll get the same thing.
All of these comments are wrong omg. They're not just chocolate chips, they're chocolate covered cookie crumbles that have been shaped into the small chips. The ingredients on the bag literally say cookie crumbs. That's why it's hard to recreate at home because you can't just buy chips.

I’ll look into that!
I remember being such an obnoxious middle schooler and correcting my mom whenever she’d order me a “chocolate chip” Frappuccino 😅
They aren't really that similar to chocolate chips. Try eating one by themselves. They actually taste pretty salty.

Neither the java chip frap nor the mocha cookie crumble frap should have cookie crumbles blended in.
Sorry, I phrased it poorly. The Java chips themselves have cookie bits.
our java chips are made with cookie pieces in them! They taste super delicious to me hehe.
This is the correct answer OP! I didn’t know this until just a bit ago when I was grabbing the ingredients list for someone else down thread.

they’re just pieces of low quality chocolate chopped into cubes
They are java chips, slightly coffee flavored chocolate chips.

I sure do love snacking on them with a pup cup and mocha drzzle and cookie crumble
Java Chip 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
